I personally find Vikram brilliant, Shashi as usual and Sardesai was just flexig. The arguments by Vikram are true and they make sense , even Shashi would have agreed to it but yes politics like always will come in and ruin evrything.

There is a flipside which was not revealed: The Dalit issue articulated by Ambedkar. Old history cannot be minimized to Hindu- Muslim binary. In Tamilnadu, the Dravidian politics is foregrounding it in a clumsy manner. I have not read VS but if he has ignored the Dalit issue, then his stand gets vitiated. He cannot stand on a moral high ground , Ignoring this soft underbelly of India.
Assuming, the Hindu-Muslim binary is settled in favour of the Hindu, the very same scars that the right wing is banking on will come to haunt it.

Mr Sampath put very good point. You can't move forward without wounds healed. What our historians did is they not only hid the history but put in such a manner that they made invader heros. Today's technology won't allow you paint only your story. When Hindus of India learn what happened to their ancestors they do feel bad. And when they see those oppressors getting honored in the same country because of false history, they get angered.

My point was that when the debate began, Sampath was the one who was asking for multiple viewpoints to be allowed to be shared while later, as the debate moved on both Sardesai and Tharoor, unable to match Vikram's points, brought out the victim card and tried to use Vikram Sampath's language against himself.

What you is the bottom line of the purpose of History. If we apply cosmetic treatment rather than truthifying, then the deceptions would lead to the repetitions of the past and worse the holocaust. Shashi Tharoor's "...centuries before our republic was even born" reeks of coloniality. This nation did not come into being on 14th Aug 1947. The Indian republic has survived for a long time in various forms and spread under various kings, queens and other leaders much before the British "cobbled together a nation". The fact that we have pilgrimage sites and yatras all over this sacred land respected by all Hindus is a testimony to this.

This is the problem. Sashi Tharoor's English is superior and we are STILL in October 2021 getting attracted towards English only. Can history ever be 'truthified'? You yourself talked of the Blindmen and the Elephant...historians like the common man do not live in a vaccum so will always be affected by politics and although Vikram kept saying he is not biased politically, the bias showed. So, what students of history need to be exposed to is multiple points of history...every human being has good and bad sides to them, thus no person specially a historical figure can be only good or bad...let's accept that. How many Indians who studied history in India know that the great emperor Ashoka was lost in Indian history and rediscovered by European scholars? So, no race in history was without blemish...let's know that and then we can accept all of history.

From Shashi's talk it is clear there is a vocal group of elitist in academia, media and opposition who will certainly find it not in their personal interest to upset the apple cart. But what is sad is that a popular PM enjoying parliament majority, and the SC of the country are shying away in doing a course correction by upholding our constitutional values as binding over any religious ideology and implementing laws fairly and uniformly. PM and judges have a role in articulating vision of a modern India and the scope of religion in that context. Demonising majority doesn't help. Theirs is a reaction to the govt and the court allowing constitution to be abused . If govt n court take up the nation building task in a convincing manner I'm sure hindus would stay on the sidelines. After all no one is against islam or muslims or whether they apologise for the past, but the community doesn't want to see the larger national priority without the prism of their religion and that makes them ouliers.. with a large population this will hamper nation building With every passing year course correction will only be that much tough. Historians having the freedom to write their own books is fine and all, because there's only a fraction of people interested to read about it to be honest. BUT, the real need of the hour is to introduce correct history in schools. Change those NCERT texts, let the children know about the truth right from childhood! The Hindu civiliansation is the oldest in the world and there is a reason why we still are here! And that is something to be proud of rather than being ashamed!

Let's face it, the way Congress and the Left has morphed history, if the real history of IND is told, BJP would gain politically from it, but that's a self-inflicted collateral damage of the Congress and the Left and it isn't enough justification to morph history. History is like the Monsoons, when it rains floods and damage occurs but that's temporary, a price that needs to be paid for a good Monsoon, but the long-term gains are much much more beneficial, abundant harvest, prosperity and well-being.
