I think the real secret here is the Ermine frosting! Often, this cake is topped with a cream cheese frosting (like my Best-Ever Carrot Cake recipe), but if you want a traditional red velvet cake, then you need ermine frosting on top. It isn't as sweet as your other frostings, and the super creamy topping is perfect to balance the sweetness of the cake.
Plus, this is a great dessert to whip up for friends, or your main squeeze, on Valentine's Day!

i just tried ur 1 stack pancakes recipe yesterday. They taste amazing. they r soo soft and fluffy and so simple to make. I used to make a very complex time consuming buttermilk pancakes recipe. I’ve always made this cake with the traditional frosting, but often use almond flavor instead of vanilla. It’s excellent as well. I never toasted the flour. Good to know. I also use the frosting on my Nutty but Nice salted peanut cake. My all time favorite.

So many loves a cream cheese frosting with this cake, but the frosting made with flour is awesome!! It really let's the delicate chocolate flavor shine. This is my favorite cake💖

I make a red velvet cake about 3 times a month and I add brown sugar in it. I’m In the south the icing has finely chopped pecans. I can eat red velvet every way cooked this is my favorite cake 🎂 yours looks delicious 🥰

Looks so good! Can you substitute the milk to dairy free milk and can you use vegan margarine or coconut oil instead of the butter in the frosting? I’m allergic to dairy but would love this cake

Yum! I've heard about ermine frosting before, but I never knew it had a little flour in it! And Valentine's Day is coming up after all. Although I do wonder if there's a good natural substitute for red food coloring.
Try Beets.
I made this last weekend and it was fabulous! It was soft and moist and topped it off w cream cheese frosting and some white chocochips and cake crumbs. I got a lovely red colour too! Thanks Gemma!😋🤤💝
