    Mini-bio: My name is Brady. I'm 24 years old and am a graduate student in history. I started this channel as something fun to do while I finish my schooling. My primary area of study ranges roughly from the American Revolution through the first sixty years of the 19th century. While I am a historian (with a B.A. in Liberal Arts), I am a very new historian. I am more of a learner than a teacher, so I use the react format to do a little bit of both. Also, flags are fun, and I like them very much... and video games... and maybe some other stuff. While my videos are not all history related, this channel has a serious social studies bend to it.
    Bird Note: I have a bird, his name is Peridot (Peri for short). You may see him appear in some videos and not others. While he has quickly become the channel's mascot, he only appears in videos when he feels like it. I don't force him to come on camera, he just likes being around hoomans, and I am hooman. Also, understand that birds are a lot of work, so don't go out and get one impulsively just because mine appears behaved in my videos. Bird parenting is a full-time job.

      There is also a debate and it is essentially "it doesn't count if you say the CHARACTER Macbeth, but if you say it as the play's name then y'know, here comes down the chandelier." But it is a debate, not written in stone.

    “You can write rhymes, but you can’t write mine.” Musically, that ends up becoming true. Whenever Alexander raps he does great rhymes until it comes to Philip. “Philip you outshine the morning sun, my son.” “Philip, you would like it uptown, it’s quiet uptown.” Neither line rhymes, it just repeats the same word.

    For the Macbeth references
    "they think me Macbeth, ambition is my folly" Macbeth's downfall is his vision of becoming King of Scotland after three witches tell him he will do so, similar to Hamilton's vision and always wanting to climb higher (the man is non-stop)
    "Madison is Banquo" Banquo was loyal to Macbeth until he gains too much power much like Madison being a partner of Hamilton during the writing of the Federalist Papers until Madison feared the government could become too powerful. However unlike Macbeth with Banqou, Hamilton does not have Madison killed
    "Jefferson is Macduff" this part is really cool because both Macduff and Jefferson don't show up until Hamilton/Macbeth have gained power. Macduff opposes and eventually usurps Macbeth.
    "And Birnam Wood is Congress on its way to Dunsinane" The witches mentioned that Macbeth's reign would be safe until Birnam Wood would come to Dunsinane which Macbeth thought would mean forever because tress can't exactly move can they? Except Macduff cut down the trees to camoflauge them on their way to Dunsinane. Much like Congress is on its way to Hamilton as alluded to in Cabinet Battle 1 "I suppose they will ask for your removal"

    After this, during "say no to this" (I have yet to look this up) Hamilton confronts Mrs. Reynolds about a letter he received from James Reynolds he calls out "Was this whole story a set up?" And I found that really interesting. They knew Hamilton was wealthy, being a successful man, and having married a schuyler, so they took advantage of his kindness, stress, and loneliness to bank off of through the affair. I was just wondering a little bit about that? Maybe you could elaborate for me? It's just a really interesting topic, and hearing it from a historian would be great.

    • @Celia_09
      @Celia_09 3 роки тому +3

      From what I heard, the affair could not be true (sort of). When it came to showing the letters from Maria Reynolds, Hamilton showed ones that were quite strange written (having similarities to the ones Eliza wrote to him) so it's not certain that the affair happened as we know it.
      (Some people say that the affair never occurred and he just invented it to escape from a major scandal).

    • @jaylee5876
      @jaylee5876 3 роки тому +4

      I am unsure so don't come at me, but I think of it like this...
      Maria Lewis was born very poor, with no evidence of education (because of her not having as much money, is also why you will see her wear outdated dresses, as apposed to the Schuyler children who were much wealthier.) At age 15, she married James Reynolds. Some time later, she had a child named Susan with him. In her 20's we led to believe by some historians her husband left her to be alone with her daughter, which was not much of a loss because of how he treated her. At age 23, she met one of her many lovers, the best known one, Alexander Hamilton. BUT, their relationship wasn't just jump on in my dress, it started financially, because she needed the money to support her daughter. Eventually as you know, it turned into more. Now, what I will state next is the part I am not sure if it's true or not, but I think that she stayed with the affair because she was worried if she left Hamilton would treat her as her husband did, and also if she left, he would stop helping her with the money for her daughter. We believe that Maria was going to write her own Reynolds Pamphlet, however as evident in her letters to Hamilton, she had little to no education. HOWEVER, Maria didn't turn these letters in herself, therefore, Hamilton had complete control of the letters that people saw from Maria and the light we are made to see her in throughout our lives. After the affair was said and done she got a divorce with her husband. (fun fact, her divorce lawyer was Aaron Burr) She then got married to one of her other lovers, John Clement, I think was his name. She then moved away with him. When she came back to America she was under her new name: Maria Clement. With no evidence of her being a part of the Reynolds Affair. Died around age 60. Again, I remind you I am not a historian or grammar expert so don't scold me if I am factually inaccurate, or use the wrong tense, punctuation, and/or spelling. Thank you, I now will rest my thumbs.

    I don't know much about Hamilton's relationship with the likes of Madison but I can try and break down the Macbeth references.
    "Ambition is my folly" Macbeth's ambition is what leads to his downfall.
    Banquo was his friend who also received a prophecy from the witches. Macbeth was told he would be king, whereas Banquo was told his son's will be kings. Macbeth becomes very jealous and paranoid of Banquo, thinking that he has committed his crimes for the benefit of Banquo's descendents. He then orders for Banquo to be killed.
    Macduff is the character who eventually kills Macbeth. He is the only man with the ability to do so. Macbeth has become cocky and thinks he's invincible by the time Macduff kills him.
    Birnam Wood on the way to Dunsinane. One of the prophecies given to Macbeth is that he can't be killed until the woods move. He begins to think this means he can't be killed because how can trees get up and move. The soldiers, who are going to overthrow him, dress up in camouflage as trees and move towards the castle, Dunsinane.

    In 1791, Eliza and some of the children left to go stay with her father bc he was worried about Eliza's health being damaged during the hot Philadelphia summer (which is when the affair occured). If you get to the duel that Phillip dies in, one book I read , was historical fiction - but made me wonder if it was fact. In that book it was Angelicas Husband that gave Phillip the gun. It may be too obscure to have been recorded but made me wonder. In the musical Alexander gave him the gun so of course both narratives diverged. Idk why it stood out to me so much but it did

    • @BradyDouglass
      @BradyDouglass  3 роки тому +3

      I can answer this here since it’s a simple question. Angelica’s husband, John Church, definitely gave him the gun. His guns were used in both Phillip and Alexander’s duel. Church also dueled Aaron Burr with those guns before Burr dueled Alexander. Those guns saw a lot of action.

    There is a song that you have to check out called "Ben Franklin's Song" Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the lyrics before he realized there wasn't enough room in the play for it. So he contacted the band The Decemberists and gave the lyrics to them. It's terrific fun stuff, and I think it has some interesting things about B Franklin. The Decemberists wrote the music and together they made it happen (it's got some F-bombs so make of that what you will). Okay, the workshop version **cracks knuckles**
    Lets talk about the differences:
    ▪There is a cut song called 'no john trumbull' which transitions into cabinet battle #1
    ▪Schuyler defeated is more of its own song and then it leads into a cut song, let it go
    ▪ let it go is actually a really good song, hamilton is a ball of fiery anger, eliza and washington are trying to get him to chill while burr becomes a senator
    ▪'washington on your side' is pretty different and has more happening including the jefferson-hamilton press rivalry and there is more james madison content
    ▪'one last time' is COMPLETELY different, its called 'one last ride' and its about the whiskey rebellion its so good
    ▪'the adams administration' is a rap in the workshop version and he destroys john adams
    ▪ Laurens is in Hurricane.
    ▪angelica's part in 'the reynolds pamphlet' is its own song! Its called 'congratulations' and its my personal favourite song which was unfortunately cut from the musical and she goes OFF on alexander
    ▪'dear theodosia reprise' exists and it hurts
    ▪'your obedient servant' is really good in this version there are more direct quotes from the actual letters
    ▪ten things one thing and 'world was wide enough' are completely different songs and then hamilton talks about the morning of the duel from his perspective
    ▪'who lives who dies who tells your story' includes alexanders last letter to eliza, its slightly different as well
    This is mostly from memory but some songs i had to go back and listen to the workshop version to add them to the list and im not entirely sure about act 1, i could go on about the hamildrops and cut songs but this comment about the workshop song is already a big essay so ill go on about them in another comment another time
