I think the whole immigrant thing with Hamilton in the play could also be because of Lin-Manuel miranda's heritage and is kind of a reference to that. Lin's family is from Puerto Rico which in technically a US territory but to everyone in the US they are seen as immigrants because they come from a culture that is associated with latin america, just like Hamilton who came from the Caribbean a place that even though was under british ruling was not considered a british culture, hence the immigrant thing.
Lin-Manuel Miranda actually talked about this. It was when they were rehearsing for the Puerto Rico run of "Hamilton" that was done to raise money for the people after the hurricane. He said that Hamilton was poor and orphaned as a child and the charity of the people in his town brought him to New York. Miranda said he grew up mostly poor in New York, the proceeds from "Hamilton" brought him wealth and fame. And now (at that time) "Hamilton" was returning to the
Yeah, Jefferson was super fancy and rich. He tried to buy the actual Roman copy of the Venus de Milo (the original one), that’s how rich he was. He still landed with a copy because they didn’t want to sell him the original. Jefferson was just a lot.
Gosh I can't express how much I love this series. He's such an amazing person and does a great job explaining everything and showing new lights on popular misconceptions.
5:50 That sounds absolutely fair to me. The gov gave you an iou, in lieu of cash they didnt have. Someone with more time to wait than you offered you some cash for the iou. You took it. You cant be mad about it later.
Anyone love aaron burr and thomas as much as hamilton? And i agree, that playing up Hamilton as a hero is a mistake on lin's part. That's why burr is the best in this musical
I don't think he really played him up as a hero. It seemed more to me that he was trying to follow Chernow's book and also sort of pushing back the century and a half of people not knowing Hamilton or straight up trying to insult him as much as possible. I actually read a couple cool essays a few weeks ago about the back and forth treatment of Hamilton throughout history.
If my classmate persues what he wants to become (he wants to become a historian) I hope he will react to historic stuff as well (I think he wants to become a 20th century historian though because he‘s really interested in the first and second world war and knows basically everything about it. He took 2 90 minutes periods to talk about stuff when we‘re supposed to only talk 10 minutes in our presentation wich was on free base😂)
Usually, colleges pay them to research or teach, or museums to curate and authenticate. Sometimes they publish successful books (like Ron Chernow's Hamilton biography that the play is based on). Sometimes corporations or states or cities will hire official historians to write (flattering) histories of them. Sometimes they get rich people or organizations to pay for their research. Sometimes, art or antiques collectors will hire them to authenticate or estimate the value of a piece. There are probably other ways for a historian to make money, but those are the ones I know about. I would also like to be a career historian. I'm not, tho.
Jefferson made some disparaging remarks about Washington that strained their relationship but honestly it was more Martha Washington who despised Jefferson. It's kind of insane to think that the people who created this country, while undoubtedly brilliant, could act like schoolchildren from time to time 🤦♀️
The immigrant/part-black thing probably has more to do with the need to simplify the concept quickly for the audience. Calling him an immigrant is a moniker that would be more universally understood by a wide audience. Also, the biggest insult they actually used was "bastard" and that would be unlikely to be worked into a lyrical song. (Burr already does it in the exposition
I love the video. One thing I kinda wished he talked about was when Jefferson says at about the end of the song “The Emperor has no clothes.” I hope this isn’t something I’m supposed to know but what does that even mean. 😂 If someone could explain that to me that would be great!
Three months late but “ The emperor has no clothes” is a referring to a Hans Christian Andersen story about an emperor requesting new clothes and two swindlers giving him an “outfit” that turns invisible around people unfit for his office. Its a lie (obv), but everyone assisting the emperor refuses to tell him so he doesn’t think they’re unfit for their positions until a child sees him outside and says ‘the emperor has no clothes on’. The moral is about being surrounded by ‘yes men’ with nobody to correct you when you look dumb pretty much
the emperor has no clothes and the invisible line make alot of sense with the king from the emperors clothes and the hamilton character in and out of history are both talked about their arrogance and self image
Since you haven't done the Adams Administration, I suggest doing the workshop one along with the original. Idk if you have a video about it, but I’m curious about your thoughts of removing statues and renaming confederate things. I’m from Virginia and there is SO much civil war related stuff, roads named after people and lots of statues. I’m not sure what I think of it yet. I kinda see both sides, idk just curious on your thoughts.
I think he mentioned some of his thoughts on the Civil War (I don't think it had to do with the statues or anything, but just the history behind it) on his two part reaction to Oversimplified Civil War.
I wonder if the immigrant thing is more about how Hamilton saw himself? Like he wasn’t like the others, he was different? So he assumed it was because of his background? Idk, something else that we’ll never know.
I think it had a bit more to do with how Lin saw Hamilton and how he connected with him as a character. Obviously creative liberties are always taken with things like this (stage shows, movies, TV Shows, etc) but I also always see it and suggest to others as a good jumping on point to actually learn more about these people and events, rather than take it all at face value. It is still a semi-fictional portrayal, but could be a very good jumping on point for people young and old to learn or refresh their knowledge about early American history.

...to the islands and bringing money back to the people of the island to help them. He said it was full circle for Alexander Hamilton.
.... Why in the world would that be the case
I haven’t seen a single person refer to Puerto Ricans as immigrants.
The haircut looks good
Estoy de acuerdo, se ve muy bien 🥰
I like ya cut G

Yeah jefferson‘s house is big and fancy and all, BUT HAVE YOU SEEN HIS BEDROOM?? I‘M OBSESSED WITH THE FACT HE CAN SLIDE INTO 2 ROOMS IN THE MORNING
I love her you're just casually holding your bird like it's some kind of microphone or soft drink. And the bird's not even struggling
The workshop version of this song actually addresses some of the rumors and accusations from Jeff and his crew! Hell, even Madison gets extra bars!

I don't think he played him as a hero, in fact he made Burr pretty likable with "The World Was Wide Enough" and "The Room Where It Happens"

How do historians even make money, if I knew I'd prolly persue the field cuz I LOVE history

Also, he should react to "Button" from The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. I'd like to here what he had to say about such an unknown historical figure
If only Washington had stayed a little longer with Hamilton :(
I heard "the military can't live in your house" and went "The ARMY can't live IN YA HOUSE"
Thanks for explaining the, “if there’s a fire to douse, you can’t put it out from inside the house,” part. I was too dense to figure it out on my own😏

Nice haircut! Also, love your content!
I noticed how only the people who don’t like Alexander call him a immigrant in the musical
I love these! My fav part of the chanel!
You should review the cut song about the Adam's Administration (it is on UA-cam). He has lots of interesting history in it.

If I’m not wrong it could be referring to how politically powerful Alexander was with Washington and maybe referring to his affair not sure tho

Hi! Love your videos!! This is the one song that kinda makes me think of Jefferson as not this incredibly horrible person too.
Which character would Brady play if he was in the Hamilton Musical?
Laurens/Philip
If I consider the whole cast, I could see him having fun with being Charles Lee
Laurens
Samuel seabury.
Jefferson
The line you're looking for is "...smells like new money-dresses like fake royalty."
Monticello is gorgeous
Next up is “One Last Time”
Do Stephen Sondheim’s assassins about every presidential assassination

Monticello is nice, but I'll have to disagree, Biltmore is much nicer architecturally. The Vanderbilt's did a spectacular job on that house.
