I think you're misunderstanding what's going on a little? Alexander isn't in love with Angelica, he's still in love with Eliza. Angelica doesn't want to steal Eliza's husband, she loves him but wants it to stay platonic for Eliza's sake. Also in Satisfied/Helpless, Angelica helped the two get together, and it would tear her apart if they weren't together. You're supposed to want Alexander to go with the sisters because he has no time for his family due to his job. There is not intent for him to be with Angelica.
Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding you?
Meredith Frazier No, you understood her perfectly. I also said something like this, but not in depth at all.
Meredith Frazier I mean, Alexander still has a major thing for Angelica. He has love for Eliza but don't forget that before that he had his eyes on Angelica first. In terms of the musical, Alexander seems to have a love of both Angelica and Eliza and feels conflicted over it. In the song you see he has Eliza to go to for emotional support but he actively seeks out Angelica from across the ocean for intellectual companionship.
They literally sing that they cannot get the other out of their head no matter how much they try.
IRL, Alexander seems to have never had romantic love for Eliza. Angelica was already married and he married Eliza for wealth and status. Yeah he does that in the musical, but I doubt he was as emotionally attach. He even wrote to Lauren's that he liked Eliza in some way and she had "beautiful eyes", he felt like he had settled in both looks and brains.
He though Eliza wasn't pretty or smart. And then proceeded to IRL write to Angelica several times calling her "my dearest". He also told Mariah, in letters, that she was way prettier than his wife.
Alexander was a cheating dick.

If you really want to get to the turning point in this story, watch an animatic of "Say No to This". Unfortunately, Galactibun doesn't have one of the complete song, and even says themself that they got lazy with the drawing. However, there are still plenty of different and exceptional animatics of it. I'd suggest one by "pan with a plan".

First time I was going through this musical, I thought the same thing. The way they showed Hamilton's love for Angelica and her love for Alexander was kinda making people, including me, believe they were pointing in a peculiar direction but thank goodness I was wrong. The drama would have been unbearable for my little heart. bleh
Angelica was in love with alexander but she loves her sister more so she would never do anything that would hurt her sister.

If you didn't notice, when Angelica says "Screw your courage to the sticking place," it's a reference to Macbeth. Angie is portraying herself as Lady Macbeth, as Alex portrayed himself as Macbeth earlier.
okay so let me explain this part of the story real quick. eliza knew alexander wrote her sister and she did not mind. eliza invited her sister for a family i guess you can say vacation and when she arrives excited because she has not seen her sister and alexander for a long time. eliza and angelica try to get alex to come with them upstate and take a break from all his work but he refuses. not long after angelica, eliza, and the kids go upstate alexander is left alone and yeah alex ends up having affairs you would have to listen to "Say No To This", "Burn", and "The Reynolds Pamphlet" for more

I love seeing how this whole situation looks to someone who hasn't seen the play. It really takes me back to when I first heard Hamilton and all those feelings you get the first time through. I do agree it comes across like they're setting Alex/Angelica up - until literally the next song, but it really did fool me the first time through, too! Glad to know it's not just me.

He and Angelica got along due to their matching wits, but he very much loved Eliza. He and Angelica were able to understand on the same level as Eliza is emotionally intelligent and knows when to step in and when to stay out like in Schuyler Defeated.
