I appreciate you sharing your journey as a nomad. I think New York City is perfect for you!! I feel like you were so happy living there. My daughter is living the nomad life right now as she is a travel nurse. It has given her the opportunity to live in places she would not have lived and to not just vacation there but explore living there.

In order to have a more eye-opening experience you could also try living abroad for some time. It can definitely teach you a lot about yourself, it enriches you and changes your perspective on the world; much more than moving to a different city but always in your country in my opinion :)
We sold everything last year and travel full-time. Our children are all adults. We’ve been in Europe for three months and love living out of a suitcase.
This video is on point. It’s a very different different experience living nomadically than vacationing somewhere.

I feel like this could be a really good way to detach from all possessions. You could see just what you really actually need to survive and not all the extra unnecessary conveniences.

Great recap! This sounds very similar to my experience - there's so much to be said about experiencing new things in new places in terms of influencing creativity and experiencing life. The flip side is that the days can often seem "shorter"... you don't realize how much time you save in specific daily/weekly routines when you have a "home". And the financial aspect can be daunting and irregular week to week. If you can rely on friends and family in faraway places, bouncing around is much more feasible. For anyone on the fence about trying something like this, do it! Prioritize a few months experiment as one of your goals.
We did this last year around this time. We got a second vaccine and our lease was up! So we put everything in storage and drove around. We had friends that all graduated from grad school during the initial 2020 lockdowns and all moved away. So we took the chance to go live in their areas for 4-6 weeks at a time.
We actually saved money from our monthly expenses. We are located in DC so rent isn’t cheap for a two bedroom. We went to New Mexico, Texas (not our choice there for a wedding), North Carolina (2 cities), and Pennsylvania. Average month over these five months we found airbnbs (one bedrooms) $2750/month. Which was much less than our rent! Super awesome for us. Most expensive was Texas for rentals.
Also we have a smaller SUV and packed it completely up, like cargo carrier and all. We did bring a pop up desk and chair for my partner who was working remotely the whole time. Not all the places had that and it turned any kitchen into an office space.
Would highly recommend this for anyone that can do it. It was one of the best experiences my partner and I have had together. Especially bringing our pup all over the US. She was the best travel buddy.

I took a year off to travel the world in 2010-11 and lived out of my suitcase, was not too bad for the first few months but got a bit tiring after a year but now I itch to go travel out of a suitcase again... there is a certain aspect of freedom that is experienced with that type of minimalism :) When each item you own has purpose and value, rather than what a lot of folks do - accumulate a lot of junk that they don't even use.

Hi! My sweet spot is being a snowbird. My home base is Chicago where I spend the fall months, I love the changing tree leaves and warm but at times rainy 70s-60s temps it's food to my soul. I signed a lease in Santa Monica and you don't need a car in LA (in the right neighborhood), I have 3 grocery stores and plenty of shops and cafes within a 5 block radius. Plus only 10 blocks to the beach. There's something magical about the energy in Cali and I'm living it! My hybrid Lexus is safety stored in my garage in Chicago. I'm excited to see your new destination!

Downtown LB is a great area to visit, especially near Naples, Alamitos Bay, and 2nd & PCH plaza. LBX plaza has some amazing food inside and around the Hangar building, down the street from the airport.

I’m honestly so happy I came across this video. I ended up becoming homeless after my brother decided to move across the county but I’m leaving for school in NC this fall. I’m currently living out of my friends place but I’ll definitely be bouncing around until my semester starts and I’m actually excited to explore and travel until then. But, yes those monthly AirBNB are so expensive.

This is actually a powerful video for me. I been traveling for the past 3 months in Europe with a 10kg backpack, and oh boy it can get difficult at some points. As like you, im a guy that really enjoys his own space, and coming back to his own bed, so this was extra challenge, also doing it on my own. So far, its been extremely worth it, would recommend you guys jumping into adventure as well!

So true.. exercising & eating well is way harder when living out of a suitcase, & in a place just for a few wks/month. I felt I was losing brain cells from not having a work routine, & yet other parts of my brain felt more relaxed & more interconnected as a whole due to more connection w/ so many new people (asking for directions etc).
I have been following you for a long time, this is perhaps the video that I enjoyed the most, I am glad you are ready to settle down again, I hope it's not South Florida, you'll expend endless amounts of time driving and meeting very transient and shallow people, I have been here over forty years and I can count in one hand the amount of people I can call friends, keep up the good work!!

In NYC I always felt to get up and always be on the go. I always want to get things done. While visiting Florida I felt more relaxed. I went on trips to Jamaica where I felt like I was in paradise. I just feel more motivated in the city than anywhere else.

I'm in João Pessoa in the north east of brazil right now.
A month rent on airbnb costs aroung 1000 dolars and it's an averall cheap city.
It's also super safe and the ocean is warm

You need to live in Traverse City Michigan for a few weeks this next summer. It will be totally different for you & you will be near some of the most beautiful water in the USA between Lake Michigan,Torch Lake (carribean like water),Little & big glen lake.... Massive sand dunes, plus very friendly people. I live in Southern Michigan & would love to live up there during the summer. I can get you in touch with a step relative up there who used to live in California for many years & loves it up there. Take a trip to Mackinaw Island not far. No vehicles allowed just walking or bicycles. Fudge is outstanding there.

5:20 Preach! I’ve also found that I don’t like cities that are car-centric. Unfortunately, only 8 US cities have more than 1 metro line, and at this point I don’t see myself ever living anywhere else. (Those 8 cities are NYC, Boston, Philly, DC, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco and [surprisingly] LA)
Moving from place to place is challenging no doubt, but what I found is that you grow in ways you would not have otherwise… You definitely understand the resources you need around you from transportation, restaurants, to air ports depending on your lifestyle. Good luck Shelby.

The best way to hack LA traffic for me was getting a motorcycle since in California you can legally lane split and the weather is almost always perfect riding weather. It's not for everybody of course, and it is way more riskier in general--there are some crazy drivers that literally don't care about your life--but overall I found it was an exciting way to experience the city and it definitely cut down on the commute time. Another bonus is that parking is almost never an issue. 🏍

That's mainly why I love living in Orange County. It's an hour in the middle between L.A. and San Diego. It's a lot more spread out and also there's free public parking. L.A. has a very go go go vibe whereas Orange County is more chill / laid back. For me with traffic, I'd still love to live on the outskirts of Orange County with less traffic.
I've lived in both rural, suburban and in the city. They all have their pros and cons, but NYC and Southern California are both great bc there's so much to do. You don't have to feel obligated, but the choice is there!
Traveling is always an eye opener though, living in Seattle for awhile I missed the beaches that California had and the weather was always sunny and nice. You live, learn and appreciate the things that you had and also the new experiences.
I was also homesick after 2 weeks visiting Hawaii as well. There's lots to do in Hawaii, but felt like California had a lot more as well. It's still great for a vacation alone or with family and friends.

It would be cool to see a community of nomads all share there homes and you can just swap around and you just pay the cleaning fee and your own rent and that gives you access to all other places in that price bracket. This way your not paying the increased prices of Airbnb but you can hop around other cities and have a place to stay.

Through no fault of my own~ I became a nomad~ but on the no $$ side. It was about 4 years and then I got a campervan. Dignity.
I live in Austin TX but decided to go to Destin FL for 6 weeks to work remotely in Jan/Feb. I think all the pros/cons you mentioned were spot on. I don't think I'll ever do that long of a stay anywhere again, unless I'm staying with friends/family. It's just not as amazing as you imagine it being.

20s be nomadic / live abroad if you can. I think NYC is an incredible place for your 20s / early 30s. Southern California is awesome if you want a outdoor / healthy life the weather is just unbeatable.

Try this in another country, it'd lower your expenses, and you get to learn new cultures.

What I really dislike about traveling is that when you're looking for an item of clothing or a bathroom product, it's so hard to find and I'm not patient. Also, bathroom products always leak or get wet in my experience!

Hi you just have to protect the lids with plastic wrap. And yes when it comes ro clothing and makeup you really need to take versatile capsule wadrabe and jewleries rhat go with everything. I used to live that lifestyle too so I get it.

Keep liquid products in a plastic zip-lock bag (there are various sizes).
I think One of the options you found interesting to live , at least for a year could be New York city I think the last time you were there you liked very much.

Asian and European cities have great transit no need to drive a car to get around. If you plan to be a nomad going around the world.
Just want to add, if you are in Europe try the high-speed rail trains getting around city to city then taking the airplane. I hear train stations are in the city center while airports are in the suburbs which require taxi or local transit to take you into the city center.
Life is hard @ any/ every age! But then it’s also easy @ times. There’s a balance. We’re all just humans try to navigate our way thru life! Enjoy becuz we only get one chance 💟

Nomading is surely hard but staying awhile (a few years) then moving on isn't so bad. Most places in the US are not perfect , the weather is on the cold side everywhere and the people very different. Like New Orleans a place rather small a little cold and quite dangerous but plenty to eat!

Honestly wish your nomad experience lasted a bit longer so you could've rented in Chicago during the spring/summertime. Such a good city with tons of restaurants, bars, and great public transportation.
I haven't done nomad life on purpose but have lived out of my suitcase and in Airbnb/hotels for months as a time being a military spouse. Definitely expensive and despite what people think they don't pay for everything. Lol.

All jokes aside I have lived in many states, countries and continents and basically I kind of know where to live and at what times of the year to live there and have or had properties in many of those places. Michigan is strategic for me because it's next to Canada/Toronto and Chicago, not far from NY plus summers are great and the lakes awesome. Dallas (not Texas) is nice but after living there I still would not live there. I have a place in South Florida, would never live there permanently, it's goof for a few months of the year in winter, plus it's kind of boring down there, people kind of awful, drivers are the worst, traffic is horrible, no basements and I enjoy the 2000+ extra square feet of finished basement I have here in Michigan. MY suggestion is live in a colder state during the summer like New York or Michigan and then takeoff to somewhere warm like California, Florida, Arizona or the Caribbean in the winter. My goal is to live in multiple states and countries throughout the year and basically be transient throughout the year but the proper way to do that is to own properties there, you need that stability knowing you own properties where you are going, even if you never rent them out and just have to pay for them. You can also switch out properties with family and friends if they own places elsewhere too. I would spend the most on your main home and then get condos for a $100,000 to $200,000 or so the other places you bounce to the rest of the time. Moving around is nice and makes you a much more educated and better person. You also have to get past the buying a place to make money mentality and move to a buying a place for enjoyment.
