A cracking educational video Marcus and some extremely useful tips and preventative measures. Much appreciated.
Well done! That looks like a very smart upgrade!
Thanks Jerry- easy to fit and makes a huge difference 👌🏻
Agreed, one of the best mods to do to your rear door.
I did mine the same way, but unfortunately not before the old worn door stop had allowed the door to open too far and the tyre had dented the panel.
👌🏻 it’s a good one
A good improvement !
Thanks Dave!
On the receiver plate inside u drill a new hole further back or with a bigger hole with a bush to take it 5 / 10 mm back it will stop it hitting the door card
Hi Doc, This modification has also been on my mind for a couple of weeks now. Indeed, if you're not careful when opening the back door the spare wheel slams into the right back panel, up to the point where it causes a dent (at least for my 90). Was thinking of shortening the door-catcher, but using a gas strut is even better. Going to check this out!
Yes exactly! The gas strut is so good as you it opens really slow in the last part of the open phase. You can also adjust where you want the back door to get to depending on your spare rear tyres size etc
@@thedoctorsgarage Hmm, makes me wonder: could the original door-catcher perhaps also be adjusted depending on the spare tyre’s size, without having to cut it? 🤔
@@marcelvanbirgelen6101 if you blocked the channel that it runs in toward the end that would limit it I think?
Got one waiting to be mounted when I have time... Cheers!
It’s a great mod- didn’t actually take too long to be fair
Clever! That might also work on a series LandRover with some modifications🤔
Yes, great idea 👍
Hi Doc
Great video and upgrade mate just catching up on some of your latest videos as I’ve been in hospital myself for a new right knee lol 😝
Hi Carl- thanks - hope you make a quick recovery
Hi doc, great video, makes the back door easier to use, if mark and file the door card hopefully be able to shape it so allow open up so it all fits . Regards mark
Thanks Mark- yes I need to do a bit of a trim or file down somewhere
Doc, great mod. Many thanks for sharing buddy!
Cheers Arch 👌🏻👌🏻 pleased with it!
@@thedoctorsgarage what now?
@@BigArch6564 there are so many things to
Do!!
Hi, looks like you have installed it backwards. The cylinder should be installed on the door and the rod-end to the frame. Maybe that's why the door sard popped and needed trimming?
One of the first mods I did to my td5 when I got it last November. Great job. Mine seemed to have welded nuts at the back, or maybe I was just lucky!! Had same issue with trim, just cut a hole. I'll send you a pic if you want?
Thanks 👌🏻 yes please!
@@thedoctorsgarage Would like you to show that pic on your next vid Doc if you can.
Could you mount the strut the other way round to so the reservoir is being the card. Not sure if it would fit but would possibly give enough clearance to stop the door card popping off.
Maybe I will have to try that to see if it helps
I fitted the exact same strut you have and yeah my bottom clip pops out same as yours. It used to annoy the hell outta me but Iv gotten over it now, didn't want to mess too much trimming the door card for fear of breaking those delicate fir tree clips it doesn't rattle and works really well so il leave it as is. Got to be a design fault though because like you said most of them do it.
Yeah it’s frustrating but as you say option is just to leave that bottom one unclipped!
Guys the reason being is that the English instructions seem to be wrong. The thicker part of the gas strut needs to sit inside the door, so that the thin part is pointing to the left and therefore to the outside. This is how there will be more space. Have a look at the Nakatenanga website and original instructions. Hope that will do the job at your landys. 🙌🏻
Hello, we exchanged a couple of message on one of your recent videos about swing away spare wheel carrier, guess what I have the gas strut as well on our 300Tdi, had it for over two years now and with the same plate behind the body, a couple of mechanics told me it is a good idea but could be better executed as the small original plate puts too much stress on the aluminium body, I always accompany the door when opening, I am actually thinking of changing and putting the gas strut on the top of the door, there is another kit around with the plate bolting directly on the existent holes at top of door and on the inside of the car on the back of the roof where the grab handles are.
Hi Richard - yes I’ve seen the top one- but I’ve heard they flex quite a bit with the door being open which put me off- but I do see what you mean as I see the aluminium bodywork move a bit when I open the door
@@thedoctorsgarage I see you understand... I asked a couple of mechanics and both told me to put a bigger plate behind the bodywork which I still haven't done, now the plate that holds the piston of my swing away spare wheel carrier has rusted and broken in half so have to put a new one, they quoted me £ 300 to weld the old one, not worth it a new wheel carrier goes for about £ 230.
@@richardtedeschi9290 yes a plate on the wheel box area in the rear would be ideal to give it a bit of strength
@@thedoctorsgarage It would, I asked the mechanics if it would be an extra rust trap to worry about and they didn't seem very concerned.
This is a good modification. You should try an ORE wheel carrier too.
Thanks Jason- wheel carrier has been on my list for a while now!
Thanks for the video. I see Nakatanenga make a top mounted Rear Door Gas Strut too, any particular reason you went with the bottom mount version over the top mount?
Honestly no- I think it looked easier to fit on the bottom? I can’t quite remember
Thanks for the share
Thanks 👌🏻
Can you mount the dampener other way around at all? This way the gas cylinder is inside the door card and the narrow rod protrude towards the car
I guess there’s no reason why not- I followed the instructions but will try flipping it before shaving the door card!
If it's only just touching the trim at a certain point can you reverse the strut so the shaft end is at the body to give a tiny bit more clearance?
Yeah maybe Sean- I think it might be just the angle that it comes out at- seems like a common thing with these struts
Very nice, it seems you are just leaving the bottom corner of the door unclipped then rather than trimming it back? And you didnt show any of the soundproofing - did you actually install any?
Yes I used silent coat 👌🏻
Hi again and well done,
Talking about rear door, I guess you ve got 18” alloy on the door.
I have just upgraded my alloys to 18” and Im wondering will the door handle all the weight on?
I was hoping to purchase a swing away spare wheel carrier but apparently its ll cost me £725 so I left it.
Any ideas what is the safest max weight can the door carry?
Thanks
Hey! I’m not sure but if you have a big wheel I would recommend the Optimill rear door hinges and ORE wheel carrier. It depends on your model year too as I understand the metal was better on later years of the defender so less likely to crack
Hi Doc,
Really like the new gas strut, it’s so irritating when I’m on a slight hill and my rear door keeps closing on me!
Biggest problem I have is I removed all the rear trim, drilled and threaded some holes into the existing wheel mount to take some bolts for my drop down table, then obviously refitted everything, lastly the table which sandwiches everything, would be a right pain in the A$$ to remove everything again but I think it has to be done after watching your video!!
Obviously privacy is important to all of us, is there a way I can email you photos of what I have done Doc?
Kind regards
Tony
Thanks Tony- Best way is to send me them on Instagram - you can find me @The_Doctors_Garage 👌🏻
Please...
Tell me model e dimension of tire ???
Is it an option to fit the strut to the top of the door thus avoiding the door card issue?
You can fit one to the top but I’ve heard they flex a lot? Not sure - would be interesting to hear others experience on that
Love that Mod! Can you do it with the Puma models?
Yes. I’ve done it to my 2.4.
👌🏻yes
