Thank you!
I've just changed mine using your video as guidance. The only difference in technique was to undo the nuts inside the door but leave the bolts in place.
Close the door, then undo the pillar bolts. And pull the hinge off.
That way no reason to hold the weight of the door. Then reverse the procedure putting it back.
Thanks for all your videos. And I love the Defender... In my top 3 of dream videos.
Nice work as always Gary.
Wow! I can't believe that I didn't know that LR was still making Defenders. What a bloody nice looking machine.
Great tutorial. Done really well.
a very proper job you have done. it looks great
Great video, very helpful, much appreciated
You did a fine job!
Great work.
Good job Gary great finish, well done for ditching the Nissan mate of mine had one cost him loads when it started to clock up the miles. Shame the Land Rover hasn't got the same cab space, I always find them a bit cramped when driving. Check out paddock parts they were great for landrover bits if there still going. Look forward to the truck tour, see how you fit all your kit into it.
i guess because i like watching your blacksmithing videos
When I bought a new replacement hinges which was allmakes, it had more slop than the old one I was taking off. Ended up taking the pins out and redrilling and making new pins for them. I think sometimes the stuff on that’s on eBay are seconds, as there no way they could be used as they came.
That particular door wants doing again, they have only lasted 6 years.. I might get better quality ones this time even if I only get them for the drivers door which is in constant use!
Ok well I can't wait to watch your next video
One obvious thing to have done while you were there was to change the rusty bolts for stainless steel ones, an easy fix at this stage, and plenty of copper grease on the threads. Chris B.
The lacquer (clear coat) is usually there just to allow you to polish out any minor scratches without going into the actual paint, thus leaving the colour unaffected
Brilliant video. I've just bought a defender 90 and the doors have dropped about an inch. The previous owner never sorted it and would would just slam it. I'm going to use your method of raising the catch when I replace the hinges. Let's see how it goes :)
Good luck, it’s a learning curve owning a defender!
@@garyhuston thank you. It’s a defender 90 2.5 TD 1989. It’s an Anglesey number plate too. As we all know the defender was designed on Anglesey. It’s just had a new chassis but I’ve got so much more work to do.
okay now we need a vid of the new truck, ehemm kinda glad you ditched the nissan. and very good job on the paint work
MrJsowa One coming soon!
Hi Gary,
Wonder what the three things are in chequer plate.
They look like they are in grommets.
Need to replace my bolts with SS.
Mine are far worse than yours :(
Great Video and nice workshop.

Amber LED marker lights that come on with the sidelights..

Haven't read all the comments so sorry if mentioned already, but why didn't you paint that spot behind the hinge? You have the skills and the materials...
iceburn177 I couldn't see the point really, it won't be seen again until I re-new the hinge again. It's not bare metal it is painted just not blue!
just out of interest what sort of temperature was your garage when you painted the hinge? last experience I had of painting my bulkhead hinges in my garage the paint dried and had lots of cracks in it, not sure if it was because i didnt let it cure at the right temperature or because i didnt lacquer it
I don’t recall what the temperature was 6 years ago but it was June so I’m guessing reasonably warm. No idea why yours cracked. Did you use fresh paint? If it dries too quickly I think it can affect it. I used new primer, top coat and lacquer and never had a problem. I have used the very same tin of top coat for several other hinges over the years with no issues.
Hi Gary, great video, thank you. I am going to have a go myself now! How adjustable, up or down, is the position of the door striker? It doesn't look as if there is much scope given it is fixed in two holes. That was the bit where your video was off. Cheers Peter
The door striker has loads of adjustment but if you put the hinge back where the old one was you shouldn’t need to move it.
Thank you very much Gary.
Very informative video, can you advise of what you used to unfasten the the bolts and screws, ..many thanks
What do you mean? I just used the appropriate wrench
@@garyhustonlol I'm basically learning, but I appreciate the advice. So a wrench is needed what size. Thanks
@@millin2222 I have no idea off the top of my head but open a torx set and try them until you find the right one!
@@garyhuston Thanks appreciate it
hi, can i use land rover defender hinges on a land rover series of 1968 without making any modification?
Sorry, I have no idea..
jose carlos Dávila you can use it
I wish LR were more affordable and available in the US.
A Defender on US roads is as rare as that Lada Niva classic I saw around town.
Thank you non-free market tariffs, import duties, and irrational NHTSA regulations.
You got that right
I’ve just bought stainless steel bolts for mine. Now I know how to do the doors. Is the back door the same style?
Yes, exactly the same
Are there nuts you have to get to?
Donald Ridley captive ones in the door pillar and loose ones behind the door card. You can see them if you open the door.
Sorry. I meant in the rear door. Are they captive?
I was talking about the rear door!
hey gary i'd like to see you do a vid on the kissing horses horse shoe heart
John Morris What is that?
casting pitting
Hi Gary, was the new hinge electroplated?
yes
Gary Huston OK, did the paint stick OK with out t-washing the hinge? You know what galv is like regarding painting!! Great videos by the way
yes it stuck fine as it was only electroplated not galvanized. If you are worried about it sticking use etch primer.
a horse shoe heart with the ends in the shape of horse heads bent down to close the heart. you might check out chandler dickson's channel
John Morris If he's done it why do you want me to do it?
At least your piller bolts will come out. No hope for mine
No problem, shear them off and drill them out.
@@garyhuston interesting approach. Though with how much up and down movement on both doors that may have to be done 🤔
Maybe make a straight razor ?
Kristopher Bruno already made one..
I've seen about every video you've made all look for it and your very good on how you do your videos Gary I enjoy them a lot and I feel like I've actually learned a little thank you keep up the great work!
Kristopher Bruno didn't do a video of it just made it!
Now we need a tutorial of how to remove the bottom bolt in bulkhead part......🤬🤬🤬
The big one at the bottom?
@@garyhuston ....yes..that one ....akward bastard....!!! Took me a little bit longer than your vid....but landrover tool number to the rescue....ie angle grinder....🤬
Boz 61 Haha, yes, it can be a tricky little bugger!
£1700 for a bumper. HOLEY SH*#
They're discontinuing the Defender soon, which is sad, end of an era :(
***** That price included all fitting and paint etc, but still bloody expensive!
I think LR are shooting themsejves in the foot by discontinuing it, but they say it's too hard to get it to comply with EU rules.....
garyhuston yep, sure wish our governments would clean themselves up before mandating drastic changes that add thousands to the cost of vehicles. If we could only make politicians obsolete like they do our good stuff, we'd have it made.
Hi,
I'm trying to purchase touch up paint from the eBay seller in your video description but I'm having issues checking out. eBay customer service wasn't able to help. I can't even send the seller a message on eBay.
Can you give me the seller's email or phone number?
Thanks
psdude23 Don't know why you are having trouble but it's fionamcgowan@ymail.com
Thanks for the response. Tried that already - that email is deactivated.
I was able to contact the store through eBay. Apparently they're not allowed to ship paint to foreign countries anymore.
If you took the Union Jack off and put a Satire in it's place your Landy would go faster!
+antzontoast What's a "Satire"?
Auto Correct, haha! Saltire... jokes on me!
+antzontoast I guess from that remark you're a sweaty!
Too cold to sweat up here!
+antzontoast basking in 25 degrees down here at the moment, shorts on for the first time this year!
