  • This video is a spotlight for a few plants in the Fargesia genus; which is a cold hardy clumping bamboo. I’ll also detail the conditions necessary for these beautiful plants to thrive, running bamboo and when it may be better to grow subtropical bamboos.
    If you live in zone 6, you will be relatively restricted as far as what species of Fargesia you can grow. As you get into zone 7, you will have other genera available including other Fargesia, (like F. robusta) that will thrive in your climate. As you go to zone 8 and further south, then you can start growing subtropical bamboo.
    The best place to buy bamboo is Bamboo Garden Nursery, in Oregon USA.

    I'm in NE Ohio, my Fargesia has taken two years to put up any significant new growth, but I'm thrilled with it this year. The plants need to use that time to build up the root support to mature, patience is rewarded. I should be able to take a few culm starters and put in pots for a year to start new clusters. I'll be doing a vid of that and follow ups too, check it out, subscribed here, nice to "meet" you.

      Awesome! Just remember they have to be 2 zones more cold hardy than your climate to stay outside all year. Ex: Zone 7 would require potted bamboo hardy to zone 5.

    I have the Fargesia Rufa.This is on the Eastcoast of the UK.Very heavy clay soil and damp.It has been growing very well it likes the shade and wet ground.That is just my experience with this clumping bamboo.

      Yup, that sounds about right. I’m sure any fargesia would thrive in the UK!

    Very instructional. I hadn’t thought of bamboo in my z6 garden until just now. I have the perfect shady area that needs some screening. A clumping bamboo may be the ticket. Thank you.

    Interesting video. I live in So Cal zone 10b. Bamboo has such a bad rap here that most people plant Nandina instead. There is a great 60 year old bamboo forest nearby though, in Adventureland in Disneyland. It’s really beautiful. My problem is that all the planting area I have is from moderate to deep shade. I’ll have to try some clumping bamboo.
    May I suggest that you do a whole video about growing in deep shade?

      Hm. Yeah spreading bamboo can definitely get out of hand. I have a video out on the best way to control running bamboo. It’s a time-tested Japanese method that I modified a bit. I can definitely do many videos on shade gardening. I would adapt it for your climate though.

    Hi, I will lay concrete on side of home in back yard but not all the way to street fence..I will have about 4 and a half feet of dirt between concrete slab and fence facing street. I live in the city of clovis ca in a corner lot house...I wanna know if planting bamboo for privacy will be good in my case? I want something that does not grow too big and also something easy to maintain. Been looking at evergreens too..to be honest don't know what to plant there?
    Another option was to lay concrete all tje way to fence and put trees, plants or whatever on pots for privacy..is it better to grow them in pots or in the ground?

    can bamboo live in straight water? like pond?

    • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener  4 роки тому

      No, some bamboo can tolerate periodic flooding for some time, but eventually the roots need air. You’d need other plants to grow in pond-like conditions.

      Did u say foliage for 9 months? Wat happens to rest of 3 months

    • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener  Рік тому

      Basically what happens for the other three months, depending on winter harshness, they might turn brown to varying degrees until they re-grow in spring.

      A lot of fargesia can take colder climates. Check Tradewinds Bamboos website. Look at their mountain bamboos.

      Yeah, for sure, Fargesia rufa is a shorter bamboo but a great plant, Fargesia nítida is another great cultivar which curls its leaves in inclement weather. They can eventually grow large. I’d suggest looking at Bamboo Garden’s cold hardy page. When you get snow that flattens them- leave them flattened! It is an insulator.
