      @@Safestreetinsurance I was just checking it out a minute ago. There are new shoots every day! Also, a blue heron was hanging out just below the grove. It took off as soon as I popped my head over the wall to check on the bamboo. Most entertaining plant life I've ever encountered, heh, heh!

      @@TheGardenNerd I was wondering. The nerd reference seemed too coincidental.
      I was also wondering why you referred to the running bamboo as "nasty"...? This stuff is really interesting to watch. I'm noticing a pattern in that the areas that get the sun earliest in the day are the most prolific when it comes to new shoots, at least for now.
      There's quite a mix of sizes among the culms. The diameters vary quite a bit. It's looking like some of them are going to be pretty tall, based on their diameters.
      I'm wondering if when they fill in they will have some self protection from the wind in the sense that they will reinforce each other moving as a unit. The tallest one from last year blew down during high winds and never sprang back up.

      @@wthomas7955 in the suburbs they can cause problems because you may plant some in your backyard and have it pop up in your neighbors yard 100 feet away. The fact that you have a hard time controlling it deters a lot of people away from running bamboo. If I had a couple acres I would definitely plant some though!

    • @TheGardenNerd
      @TheGardenNerd  3 роки тому

      It's really not that bad at all. It only really sheds bad once or twice a year. The benefits of having it right next to the pool and feeling like a tropical oasis far out weigh any leaves in the pool.

    I live near Deming New Mexico and have pine trees as a wind breaker. How close to these pine trees can I plant clump bamboo without the bamboo interfering with the water for the pines? The pines are in a row approximately 6’ apart. I would like to place the bamboo in separate row and placed between pine spacing but don’t know how far apart that row should be from the pine tree row.

    • @TheGardenNerd
      @TheGardenNerd  3 роки тому

      Over time the bamboo will spread out, but you can always stop it from spreading where you don't want it (so long as you have clumping bamboo). Shouldn't be an issue in terms of competing for water. Remember, bamboo is simply a grass.

    • @samajax
      @samajax 3 роки тому

      I'm not sure what your winter low temps are in Demming, but my guess is that it's below 20 degrees or more. Almost all clumping types will die to the ground when it's below 15- and those low temps are only for a few types like the Bambusa multipex varieties. You'd have to plant a runner and install a root barrier. Depending on water, etc, by the third/fourth year, a runner will send roots as far as the conditions allow.

    • @jetson2075
      @jetson2075 4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for replying. I have planted oldhamii (Giant bamboo) in South Australia, We have very hot and dry summers and mild winters. Not humid at all. ( much like the Mediterranean.) I bought them from Queensland which is a very humid state. And i thought they might not grow so well in South Australia. Well how wrong was I. It actually has me a little bit worried how fast it is growing because my beds are only 25 inches wide. The plants were only half a meter high, and the culms were half the thickness of a pencil when I planted them mid growing season last year. In half a growing season the culms are now 3 pencils thick and the plants are 3.5 meters high. I suppose i should be thankful they are growing well. They may bust my sleeper garden beds open. If they do I will just have to pull up some pavers and make them wider. Thanks again.
