Clumping Bamboo As a Hedge - Robusta and Scabrida - Bamboo that Thrives in Full Sun

  • Clumping bamboo grows very well in the Pacific Northwest. I have a grove of Robusta (a tall, upright variety) bounded by a Scabrida on either end (a variety that tends to bend a bit more). These varieties both tend to do well in full sun. Most clumpers prefer a bit of a sun/shade mix.
    This is my update for 2022. Every year I post an update of my clumping bamboo grove so people can see the progress.
    In this video I demonstrate how to trim clumping bamboo and I also show the new growth over a period of about two months. I also demonstrate how an in-ground border really is necessary, even for clumping bamboo. These plants get huge.

    I was waiting for this update. Thank. I planted a 5 meter wall of scabrida but watching your video I'm realizing i prefer robusta. I think scabrida needs more time to shows its beauty.

      Of the two plants, I do think the scabrida has a little bit more character. But if you’re just looking for something that’s upright, I think the robusta is the way to go

    Tie the scabrida all together about 3 feet above the ground this will stand it tall. Looking good this year!

    Thanks for the upload. I have 10 small Robusta in front of a fence and was thinking of adding another hedge of Scabrida. I think I will go with some more Robusta instead.

    Fertilizing in spring only helps "greenness". Fertilizing late in season will give nourishment to the roots/rizoms that is stored (like in a battery) to next year's growth period in spring.

      I am afraid to move my best blueberry bush. It is such a prolific producer. It is the only one in my yard that produces like that but it is the one closest to the bamboo unfortunately.

    Glad I watched to end that border on neighbour's fence is critical unless neighbour's wants free bamboo lol😂😂

    • @myboringchannel

      The border is definitely essential and needs to be checked annually to make sure no roots have gone over. See this video: ua-cam.com/users/shortsWt9AD8a535g

    I'm not the biggest fan of bamboo. I find its 'look' changes too quick. However, your very dense planting over it looks very nice indeed.

    This is really interesting to me because I’m considering a really similar thing in northern Illinois where we get a lot of snow in the winter. Was that fluffy snow or wet snow? Wondering what to expect.

    How many years has he grown this? Also why clumping and not running bambo? Good to see the barrier worked. How'd you get it down 30" that's a big trench to dig.

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  2 роки тому +2

      Hmmm … 6 or 7 years. Started with running but dug it out - too much maintenance. Digging? Tons of manual labor. Check out my first bamboo video - how to plant bamboo and keep it contained. I show the whole process there.

    Can I ask, when you say "robusta", do you mean a Fargesia Robusta Campbell? I am actually planning on buying that one. I did not know the canes could look that yellowish. I love it.

    @tata_tanit Рік тому +1

    Hello. Thank you for your video. I was wondering if a containment was necessary for the Fargesia. I saw a lot of video saying it was not obligatory because it was non invasive clumping bamboo. Thank you !

    • @myboringchannel
      @myboringchannel  Рік тому

      I would say it depends on how big your space is. It definitely spreads. It's big. If you have a large enough space, it's probably fine. But if you plant anywhere near a fence, I would use proper containment.
