    Very informative especially the last part where you shared that you start the plants from plugs and they are growing in the water not in soil and getting nutrients from fish waste.

    Really nice looking.
    Watched this some time ago, but it appeared again so, gave it a re-watch and it's really great.
    Am also packing it full of plants, the only, but major difference, is that I don't like filtrations. I believe that a pond doesn't need ANY water movement nor filtration. So, no carp, meaning, no koi fish, only fish species that the pond can nourish on it's own. Goldfish, guppy, some labyrinth fish that can handle the cold, rice fish, some minnow species and loach that live in still waters, shrimps of course to eat the algae, gammarus for the algae and rotting matter control, daphnia for crystal clear water, random copepods that you can get from any random water body etc. etc. and it becomes a natural pond with crystal clear water and zero noise from filtration, and also, zero electricity expense.

    Thank goodness I live in zone 10b. I can grow pretty much all the "tropical" plants you featured all year long in my garden. They do slow down growing or look ugly during the coldest part of Winter but they bounce back pretty quickly by Spring.

    My stepfather built probably a 2k gallon pond 30 years ago. For the first few years people would drive by and stop to look at it. The liner has been leaking for years. He died a few months ago, and I want to make the pond really nice again. Replacing the liner this spring, so I 'm looking for ideas to improve. Thanks for the videos.

    So lovely! I only wish I could grow half of these plants! In the Northeast where I am, the tropicals are only seasonal. I have tried overwintering water lettuce in the garage under lights, still too cold. In any case, great video, thanks and keep up the great work!

    Very nice pond, are your pond plants in pots in the bottom of the pond or did you plant them in gravel ?

    • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Judy,
      All of the plants in my pond are planted in gravel; no pots. That allows them to use the nutrients in the water, and to grow unimpeded. If a plant gets out of control, I’ll divide them.

    • @TheBarefootedGardener

      Hi David, great question. The underlayment is a type of nonwoven fabric that is designed for use in water features. Regarding the wicking, it’s but enough water to create a stagnant pool situation. But the perfect amount of water for moss and plants.

    You didn't mention the hostas. I plan to plant mine in the water. I am so tired of the slugs eating them. What is your experience? Do they grow in water, and do the slugs stay out of the water? Yours looked pretty good. Reg from Denmark 😊

    • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener  Рік тому +2

      Yes! Hostas can grow in water, albeit slower. For the hostas that are in the ground I don’t cut the hostas back, and mulch over them. That gives the slugs something to eat the next year.

    • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener  Рік тому

      The water lilies are also just planted in the gravel at the bottom of the pond- 2’ of water depth. If you want to fertilize them you can, but after they’ve been established/ growing for 4 years, they bloom almost continuously. Remember to remove dead and dying leaves out of the pond. They make great mulch in the garden.

  • @high_fructose_corn_syrup
    @high_fructose_corn_syrup Рік тому +1

    I dropped my hardy water lillies into our pond but the leaves and flowers are about 6" or less from breaching the water surface, will they be ok? I dropped them in about 2 days ago.

    • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener  Рік тому +2

      Yes, they should be. They’ll reach the surface quickly if water temperature is warm. Chances are good that you don’t have to remove it for winter- most are hardy down to zone 4 in 18” or more of water.

    • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener  4 роки тому +3

      Hi Joey,
      No, I don’t have issues with snakes around the pond. They like open sunny areas. So planting your garden to grow lush once mature will not leave them a space to sun bathe. Even if I did, they’re great for eating pests like rodents and insects. They should be more afraid of you than you are of them.

    Quick question I do not seem to find an answer online, but i assume it's pretty obvious for someone like you. If we are treating our pond with broad spectrum disease treatment, do we need to stop the filtration system for the duration of the treatment? It's a 500 gallon pond and using the The Pond Guy® ClearSolution™ G2 Filter System. There is an additional fountain aerating without filter.

    • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Elizabeth,
      What are you treating the pond for? Do you have fish? What are their symptoms? Yeah, I would stop your filter in that case, but then you’ll need to reintroduce the beneficial bacteria after. But I’d definitely recommend acutely figuring out the problem you’re having.

    • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Elizabeth,
      Thanks so much! I’m sure it’s gonna be awesome!! No, as long as it’s 2’ deep, fish can stay in all year. That said, from a predator prevention standpoint, the pond should be 3’ deep, or more. I’d go as deep as possible without having to get into permits and all that. Your shelves would be half that. I’ll record a video on this when I can get started with projects this year. It’d be incredible the amount of plants that could be grown in zone 7! Colocasia can be perennial, and red stem Thalia can be perennial too.

    • @elizabethr2908

      The Barefooted Gardener , that’s great to know! How long after you set up your pond did you put fish in? I’m filling mine with well water. Not sure how long it will take to cycle. • @TheBarefootedGardener
      @TheBarefootedGardener  3 роки тому +2

      I had to put my fish in immediately after building because I already had fish. But ideally you would probably wait two weeks or so for your larger pond fish. Minnows can be added the day after, once chlorine evaporates. I use an automatic dosing system which puts in the beneficial bacteria like an IV drip twice a day, with that you could probably put in a few larger fish immediately, but you don’t want to put in too many at once. That will create an ammonia spike without the established bacteria to support it.
