So my son, is big into D&D, he asked if his step mother and I would take him to the local shop near us, we went, because he is a good kid, well while we were there, I became interested in warhammer, and my wife discovered she absolutely loves painting miniatures, and my son asked if we could play warhammer, long story short I’m slowly building an Ork army and he is building space marines, and I enjoy it because it is something we are all bonding over, and your story about your father, was very touching to me, thank you for sharing

On the subject of cut-outs; I went to a game day event at the Liverpool Lord Street store some time in the mid-90s. It was for a nationwide campaign running that weekend simulating one of the Tyranid hive fleet incursions - you remember the type of event I mean, where there battles all over the country and then the following week White Dwarf totted up the scores.
One kid was awarded a 6ft cut-out of an Imperator titan as a reward for charging a Carnifex with a squad of imperial guardsmen (all killed instantly, obviously). I wonder how he got it home.

What a nostalgia trip. As a young kid my big brothers were big into Magic and 40k. So many memories of cozy evenings when they and their friends played 2nd edition on our kitchen table while I sat there like a little Gretchin with huge eyes watching these epic battles unfold right before my eyes. After they were finished and their friends left I always begged my oldest brother if I could be the one to put up his massive Ork army on his room bookshelf. He'd usually say yes and I would spend what felt like an hour setting up the perfect (in my mind) army formation. Then I asked him what he thought and he'd always shake his head and say it was crap. Then I'd get angry and cry, lol. Good memories.

  • @James-cj1kl

Damnit this is amazing, more nostalgia than I ever expected.
This video brought back to many memories: I have no idea what year it was, but my dad took me into the shop, I painted a Gretchen under the instruction of someone there, and took home this box. I painted all of them (yup, layer on layer as I decided my Space Marines would be Blood Angels, then Ultramarines, then Black Templars and probably more).
At that age I never properly understood the rules, but me, my dad and my younger brother made it work well enough.
I got a few more of the 40k box sets, the LOTR game, and whatever models caught my fancy growing up. Pride of place was my Balrog, broken, rebuilt, painted, repainted when I wasn't happy, and never quite finished, but loved more than anything else. When I went off to Uni my mum gave the whole lot away to a family friend who had a kid getting into the hobby... at the time I was absolutely furious, but in hindsight I hope whoever got them enjoyed them, and used it all a way into a hobby as their own.
Now I'm 31, and have a copy of Dark Imperium for my son's 11th birthday next week. The rules are better (I refuse to just say easier, they are better!!), the models are definitely better, and despite all the moaning about price, I'd still say you get more for your £ than any cinema, meal out, or any other hobby can offer. Building, painting and gaming, and the absolutely amazing staff in every GW shop I've been in... there's a reason they're still here, 8th edition and more than 20 years on.
Thank you so much for this, and what a fantastic find online. I'd love to see if you can get 3rd editions onward too!

Thanks for the walk down this nostalgic memory lane. I started in Warhammer 40K between Rogue Trader and this box set. Since I had decided to be an Ork player, buying this box was a no brainer once it was released.
I painted the monopose Orks and Gretchen, even customizing many of the Orks for variety. I used the cardboard dreadnought until the metal model was released and immediately bought and painted that up, followed by the original plastic open-topped Battle Wagon kit, and eventually a looted Rhino. Those were the days when I had more free time, less distractions, and even less money!

This was a fond trip down memory lane for me, ‘93 was the year I got into the hobby. It was a pretty tough year for me as a kid, but finding this hobby and playing boxsets like this one... as well as Space Marine (my very first boxed game) with my gang of close friends definitely got me through. So thank you for such a great video 🙂

16:50 prices may not have changed *much* but the contents sure have
This box has 2 (nearly) complete codexes, the official rulebook, 80 models, terrain (cardstock is better than nothing), data tables, and a few things here and there for roughly 80 pounds today?
Aren't the current box sets 100 pounds+? (I live in the U.S. and am too lazy to do research). And what do they come with? 40 or so models, no rulebook, mini-vodexes that have the bare minimum of data for the armies and 0 terrain? *oof*
Will say though quality has gone up so much that my wallet still takes the punch every so often :3

Yeah, that's the problem with the huge variety of models available, I suppose. It would be pretty much impossible to fit everything in one book now!

When Warhammer was a game more than painting hobby. EDIT: I haven't lost any parents yet and the idea of it scares the shit outta me. /hug

Got an Ork regiment from my dad when I was about 7 or 8 years old and it was one of the best days ever.
Great video! I'm sure your dad would be proud.
