- Building an epic diorama to match a piece of artwork from Warhammer 40k. I use all of the skills and hobby materials at my disposal to capture the mood of this incredible scene. On this giant display base, a space marine is fighting a desperate battle to defend his homeworld from the tyranid hive fleet. Will his planet survive?
This video is part of a collaboration with Squidmar miniatures! Check out his half of the collaboration here: • Surprise Miniature Cha...
In this video, Emil has challenged me to adapt a piece of warhammer 40k art into a diorama. The picture reminds me of the battle for macragge storyline from 4th edition 40k, so that's what I went with! I made a winter battleground scene, and I did my best to paint the marine the way that he is represented in the art!

Thanks for the shout outs, Brent!
Of course! Awesome tip on that light molding paste, that stuff alone might help me tackle some more snow bases in the future.
Honestly he sounds like bob ross of minis, but he so calmly just, “let’s add some of that nice blood. More... more blood”
I love how calm and wholesome this channel is
Agreed I had no problem letting my 8 year old watch with me.
He sounds like Mr Rogers, but smiles like The Joker.
Kind of reminds me of Bob Ross ...
Right!? Bob ross of minis.
Your not wrong
I love how you miniature UA-camrs all do colabs or give each other shout outs all the time
It's a dying art, we need to stick together to keep analog gaming of all types alive.
@@OGDweeb I applaud thy worthy effort, sir
I think the Miniatures UA-camrs are one of the healthiest communities around. Everyone supports everyone, it's great!
It's a wholesome community!
Everyone seems happy here
So first can i ask something
I am starting the hobby and I am starting with space marines, what is the vehicle I should get?
I got the Warhammer 40K Command edition ($165) and I think I want to get a vehicle with it
Right now I choose the predator tank, should I change it to a rhino? Or a drop pod? Maybe a vindicator? ( the land raider kinda goes out of budget tho)
Just asking!

You did such an awesome job with this! The base is fantastic. Be careful with the knife under the table! 😎
Dude, don't go pinning knives under people's tables with exacto blades!!! :-)
Would love to see Squidmars attempt at this also.
@@rahotep789 this please! @Squidmar Miniatures
I really like your honesty, for example when you tell us that you messed up or aren't happy with the results but you keep going, trying to learn from it... great attitude!
Absolutely! Thanks for watching Ray, it's awesome to hear that you appreciate my approach to this stuff :-)
I’m having a pretty hard time in life rn, but your video gave me 30mins of happiness and contentment. Thank you.
Ahhh, I'm sorry to hear that, but I'm glad you're able to search out the things that make you happy... I guess I better hurry up and make a new video! :-)
Stay strong It all gets better Just like goobertown says : just have to work through the ugly phases to get to beautiful phase. Life can be similar to miniature painting. Stay with it and you will get to the happy phase. Stay happy. Cheers :)
Hang in there =)
Keep searching out those good things. Hope you’re doing okay :)
Stay strong brother, whatever has you down, just remember there's always someone there for you, even if it's just a stranger from a different part of the world, keep being amazing! 🖤

His voice is like Bob Ross in the grim darkness of the far future.
Interesting imagery.
When he talked about "happy accidents" during the canvas paint... The references are strong with this one :P :D

Dude… this was the most chill video on mini painting. Learned a ton about the hobby and life in general. Thanks man. 😊
I suddenly feel the urge to sleep.
Not in that "it's boring" way, no, it's in that "peacefully relaxing" way, the good kind of sleep.
I love how you turned into Bob Ross when painting the canvas. Thanks for keeping it so chill. Loved this!
1:25 "If you feeling super brave" and the face your cat did in background hahaha :D
Brent you are literally the Bob Ross of miniature painting, your voice is so chilled man it's relaxing 😂 and you make the painting look easy 👌
This is a fine example of a very interesting subject , in which the lecturer , focuses on the Subject , to the Exclusion of Him-self ! No tendency to focus on his face or personality issues .
Better to be left admiring the professionalism of the presenter, than have him, his Voice, and his Face featured , ad nauseam !
I love his smile that clearly says: "I am so happy to do what I love right now."
I mean this in the most complimentary way possible. You are like the Bob Ross of miniature painting.
Was so Hyped for this vid. I love your Challenges :)
Wonderfull new Studio
Hey thanks! Exciting times :-)
just the grimdark of 40k of a space marine if being painted by such a wholesome and calm guy feels so wrong but yet so right
Nitpick time! Both Marines are Right Handed, it's just that the figurine Marine is holding the weapon with his off hand from the foregrip, as opposed to keeping it in his main hand with the pistol styled grip.
Just got finished posting the same nitpick lol. You must be at least a semi gun enthusiast too😉
I'm honestly impressed with how accessible that absolutely stunning base is. Whenever I see an awesome diorama I always automatically assume that it took monumentous amounts of work and experience, but the mileage you were able to get from just a few materials and techniques is awesome. I'm thinking that I'm going to create a small diorama like this to memorialize each of my D&D characters once they either die or live to see the end of their journey. Heck, maybe I'll buy a duplicate miniature for the diorama and repaint them so I can have a comparison of how my painting skills have improved.
I think the mountain backdrop looks best out of context, but the grey ones really convey a sense of dread and claustrophobia!
I love that he'd apparently used an X-acto knife to stab the challenge into the underdesk. The "Last Stand" heroism is the heart of all that I love about Warhammer. You don't fight because you'll win; you fight because it's RIGHT.
I like how you say "gore" and "shrapnel" so calmly, lol.
Like he has headphones in and is watching Bob Ross paint while he paints and makes these videos lol, its gold
Dude, I absolutely adore your videos. Waiting for my Squig Herd and paints to come in the mail any day now, gonna start painting.
NICE! Have you decided on squig colors yet? I'm getting a hankering to paint some squigs soon myself :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies I want the first couple of miniatures to be painted by the book, so red is my choice. When I'm feeling comfortable, then I'll experiment.
wow. I just use watered Basic Acrylic.
Надо же, какие люди)
Oh, and concerning the source for this pic: It's from the 6th Edition Codex: Space Marines, p. 20, the artist being the great Paul Dainton.
Edit: Oops, just realised some nice folks were quicker. Still, verified ... yay!
I'm pretty sure that the page number is new information! :-) Thanks so much for tracking this down. I was able to find Paul Dainton on instagram and I sent him a quick note thanking him for the sweet artwork and inspiration.
"I'm pretty sure I know what this is"
I was very much expecting you to go with something more like "This marine is loading his bolter, preparing to avenge Hoppy, his pet gamma-bunny."
I love how much this community interacts with each other
The black and gray background is the best for sure, really makes the model pop and gives the landscape more depth. Looks great though!
TY! :-)
You should never be content with the journey, but should be content with each piece you make. Perfection isn't the answer to creating art, its the enemy.
This is like Bob Ross but for Warhammer fans
Nice to see you too doing a challenge. You are both very good and helpful.
Hey Bo! Yeah it was great doing this little crossover episode, I'm glad I could get Squidmar onto the channel.
Your new studio looks impressive.
Hehehe, thanks Mark- I'm really pumped about it!
@@GoobertownHobbies Sometimes a change of scenery or even just reorganizing a work space can get me motivated to get back into painting or building.
Great video and great collaboration. I look forward to seeing more in the future.
The painting in the background reminds me of a cloud of smoke. With the blackish parts representing an obscured tyranid ready to end the marine.
I was expecting the marine surrounded 5000 Tyranids around him. with a huge nuke under his feet with a timer with enough time on the clock to use all the ammo left in his gun and extra clips. while he is fighting in a puddle of his own blood. giving the diorama a golden name plate: "Challenge Accepted!"
The way you said blood, chilled me. It's always you quiet, nice ones...
Staying calm, clean room ... something to thrive to
"Either I'll learn something new and the model will look good, or I'll learn something new and the model will not look good" words to live by
Yes!!! It was only a matter of time until you started canvas painting. And you even made a Bob Ross reference! My man
I love that philosophy of just trying something straight on and then make it work, really the best advice is "go through it and hope there is an awesome phase waiting"
In front of the marine, a gruesome hellish crater, behind him, a bob ross painting.
Really enjoying these crossover episodes. Midwinter minis next? I bet they could give you a great speed challenge.
Hey James! I'm so glad that you're liking these! :-)
Midwinter Minis? "No comment"
These videos are so relaxing it’s like Bob Ross but mini painting
A few details you could've added to aid the realism; 1) space marine settled into the snow, the snow around his shoes as he's heavy, but also footprints. 2) Dirt in the snow, the snow is very clean white but noticeably damaged on one side, if he was running around in muddied and blown up dirt, he would trample brown into the snow. 3) The dirt seems very single-coloured too, and although you don't see much of it, I would assume it'd be more littered with little rocks or clumps of varying dirt patternation.
Extra potential: Although you painted the light hitting the marine, the groundwork doesn't share the same lighting details (being more blue and yellow snow), however, if you had painted the marine without lighting on his armour, and coated or applied a reflective layer, then you can use a real light source and darkened covering/dark room, to create that dynamic lighting, which will realistically hit the model. Painting models to be responsive to real-world light and not have their details baked on is a good touch of extra realism. Image an almost mirror-like gun detail, but instead of painting in a fake reflection, you take some strong mirror-quality paint and apply that. Suddenly the gun now reflects the real-world elements a bit.
I love the positivity in this video. This really helped make me feel better about my painting.
Having a story behind helps to give order and direction to any paint job either minis, scale models, mecha, anime garage kits or any other. Thanks a lot for your video.
A great idea to try recreating a scene from a cool piece of art. I especially liked the base and the weathering on the Marine's legs. This inspired me to consider making a diorama of sorts as a backdrop to take photos of my painted D&D miniatures on. City, forest, mountain... 🤔
Just found this guy and he sounds like the bob ross of mini painting. Relaxing, soothing, and just watching this makes me want to put down the phone and start painting
The Battle for Macragge are still sung in the halls of my glorious wolves to this day.
Corking work, Goobertown Hobbies. Only recently found your video channel and thoroughly enjoy your narrations. Another splendid project :-)
Thanks so much, I'm really glad that you ended up here in Goobertown! :-)
when peoole ask me who i watch while i build, you guys are my go to guys, thanks
its like the bob ross of 40k out here. awesome
Another fantastic video and a great challenge. I enjoyed the other half of this challenge as well.
Well done on the diorama. I agree on your choice of back drops 100%. In my mind it looks like smoke billowing out of a fissure in the destroyed bunker. Perhaps the fissure the marine crawled out of after detonating the place. But now he's standing up, reloading, ready to fight more.
Nice! I like that take on it! I was also thinking about drawing a mushroom cloud way back in the distance in similar graytones...
3 years late but, wow. you sure did a good job with this. Love the way you took the narrative and ran with it trying out a ton of new stuff along the way. Inspiring.
Your talking reminds me a bit of bob Ross :D
Keep it up, really enjoying it!
Hehehe, thanks for watching! :-)
I expected him to say "a little cloud that lives" at any point when he started doing the backdrops.
@@GoobertownHobbies 24:45 Happy accidents...
Bob ross also has some great tips to paint a backdrop ;)
^this. Never knew I wanted to hear Bob Ross talk about 40k
Being left-handed sounds like the kind of thing the eugenics loving God-Emperor of Mankind would have weeded out.
Absolutely love your approach to the hobby and these recent challenges have been fantastic. I watched Squidmar create his 'necro' scene last night and it was great. But your take on his challenge is a better watch due to your attitude to vids and the hobby. You have an attention to detail to your presentation that is lost to some other vloggers., You cover the highs and the lows. I look forward to every Goober update.
I had no idea about this channel 4 days ago and now I can't stop watching them. I'm an artist myself, but I've never tried miniature designs. You guy's make it look way to easy.
Welcome aboard! Maybe you should try painting a mini one of these days.... :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies I thought it would be hard to do and you guys pretty much confirmed it. lol I'm not the best painter but we all have to start somewhere.
@@soulreaver2727 That's right! The sooner you start the sooner you'll start having fun with it :-)
I love this diorama and I always find my way back to this video. It looks really great and I’m still super amazed after my 7th watch.
I liked the nasty effect of the wash, perfectly combined with the destruction scene.
I just kinda love watching all the different sorts of model kit and miniature stuff out there, because you realize everything that everyone does can be applied in some way to what you're doing yourself. In my case, Gundam.
Thanks for this video! I appreciate you sharing your thought process through it all, and especially the “growth mindset” you have, like seeing mistakes as learning opportunities, and critiquing your work. It’s good to see you being proud of your work but also seeking to improve, knowing you can always grow and improve.
It's awesome seeing all you guys intertwined! Lol and messing with each other!
I think the marine by itself looks a bit out of place, and a whole squad in that style might look a bit wrong. But when you place it into context, it looks absolutely AMAZING
The entire First Company of the Ultramarines die defending the Northern Polar fortress. Calgar and the bulk of the Chapter were off world and return. It is an epic story.
Ah yes!! :-)
Awesome! The only way to improve is to step outside of our comfort zones. Truly inspiring.
You are the Bob Ross of miniature painting. Love this channel. Love your work. I just got back into mini painting after years of being away. Your channel, and other channels you recommend, have been an inspiration to carry on. Thank you.
Hey Darby! I'm really happy that you're getting back into painting, keep at it!!! :-)
A full army in this standard, would be incredible.
Nice work! It really came out great. I thought the battle damage to the power armor and the crater were especially solid.
You definitely captured that feeling you were going for, too. I can totally imagine your narrative happening to this lone marine.
it is really cool to see so many hobbyists in your vids
and ofc great job on this diorama
Your cat showing up in the videos puts the cherry on top
This is honestly growing to be one of my favourite hobby channels.
Also, the first backdrop you painted was my favourite
That's awesome, thanks so much for watching these videos! The first backdrop huh? That was actually third place for me, but maybe I'll give it another look... :-)
I like the yellow instead of the usual gold on the ultramarine, looks like the older style I saw when I first got into painting
I love that artwork of the Ultramarine, it looks so cool
the challenge you gave squidmar was sick.
I’m thinking about dipping my toe into painting some space marines, you’ve definitely inspired me, I just don’t know where to start with so many options, I dint play warahmmer. Just want to paint them
I think it turned out pretty great tbh, stylization and all. Got yourself a nice little mantle-piece!
i was gonna write more about this video, but all my words boil down to these: so calming and nice. thank you Goobertown.
Really can't stress how much I've been enjoying all the Goobertown collaborations, there's a really uplifting community spirit :)
You did an awesome job with that diorama, taking chances and experimenting with painting is something we can all learn from.
Awesome! I'm glad you're liking these collaborations, they're a lot of fun for me also (and there are definitely more more coming) :-)
I always love your attitude towards your work. I find this much more appealing than all of the technical aspects. I've learned a lot of those from you too, but the enjoyment of the painting process (whether it works or not) is what it's all about.
Hey thanks sean! I'm not the best painter out there, but It's awesome that folks are finding something worth watching in these videos :-)
This video cracked me up. Love the collaboration / banter with SquidMar. Please keep up the good work!
Hehehe, glad you liked it! Emil and I had a lot of fun with this :-)
That marine looks SO COOOOOL!!!!!
I would have considered putting a hive city in the background as it would have added a dimension of what the marine was fighting to defend.
The beginning of this is so campy, I love it
Thank you for the part about pushing through that bad brush strokes. I was painting a mini base that was not working the way I had hoped just as you said that. Channels like you keep the rest of us going. Thank you.
You're Bob Ross if he found solace in images depicting genocide. You da bomb!
Well played, sir! I especially appreciate the work on the diorama- I think people that are new to the hobby need to see how ugly things can be in the beginning! It's a journey (sometimes a long one) but it's all worth it in the end. Bravo.
I was saying out loud how you were a Bob Ross of minis... and this episode you're painting on canvas having happy accidents... Not disappointed.
Really like how positive and forward looking you stay during your projects and keep improving without being dissatisfied with your work thus far.
I find that´s one of the hardest parts for someone with a creative hobby- to keep doing it without being overly negative if something does´nt come out perfectly.
Great work and I think you choose the best fitting backdrop !
All parts of 40k lore are metal. ALL OF IT!!
You should've painted the back drop first and then the smurf, to try and get a feel for the same rough approach. Ironically it probably would've been more work to paint him that way, but it would also have made you bolder in your approach.
I think you did a good job, the whole thing is evocative.
My favourite is the tundra/clear sky, I think the contrast of a nice day and a bloodbath is a little bit disturbing and goes a long way to provoke some thoughts.
100% agree with you, one thing that comes to mind for me is the 9/11 attacks back in 2001,and how blue the sky was.
I always found the combination of a nice day with the chaos that happened eerie.
Really awesome video! Thank you for the content Goobs :)
Awesome video and loads of character in the end result. Thanks god it's not just me who goes through the "needs a wash" followed by "too much wash" insta-regret process.
Dude I hope you know just how much we love this channel dude every video is an absolute treat thank you!
Here is a diorama of the surface of Cadia.
**Shoves hand in pocket. Throws pocket link and random sprue cuttings on table**
**Random guardsman flies into the warp with only the force of tears**
A great video, putting the mini on the base really did tell the story.
Challenge met....and surpassed!!!! Fantastic result.
Bill
The base colors were actually really cool, they reminded me of the Super 7 Masters of the Universe figures.
