    Hi Erik, a new subscriber here. Aussie red cedar is highly prized as a furniture timber and at one time was called Red Gold. Beautiful job you've done on a rare and hard to get timber.

    Typically I stay away from any cedar..like the following woods..all in the same family....western red, incense, Alaska yellow, redwood and sequioa, Spanish cedar and Mexican cedar.. I have COPD since 2003...all of the dust..even with a respirator hammers my lungs..the dust is so fine it lingers and hangs on equipment for weeks.. The wood is quite pretty and very light in weight and able to resist molds.. as for finish..the woods does not coat very well and oil is about all I used to do with it..The wood is very soft and dent able and thus bumping it messes it up..the wood is hazardous...but I see you effort made it shine and always happy to see your result.. thanks.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Terry,
      This is not a cedar at all and is not light it is very heavy and is a gum tree or one of the many types of gum eucalyptus. No relation to cedar what so ever. The british would just name things not knowing what things really were. If you ever get a chance it is a beautiful wood.

    Eric you have certainly done this wood justice, coming from Aus I have turned a fair bit of this in lidded boxes and Christmas ornaments but your bowl is far and away better.
    Also have found out from Capt Eddie about his shine juice a great starting point for experimenting with different mixes thank you for sharing.

    Beautiful job. Simple yet finished as smooth as a babies bum. That's what I have to work on, I get so hung up about the form of the object and just throw a finish on. Both the finish and item I suppose are just as important, or go hand in hand 🤚Cheers, Sean

    Beautiful Turning. When you reversed the bowl did you tighten the chuck onto the foot or expand the jaws into the small mortise? I really like the time you spent to explain the finish. That was so helpful. Please keep up the videos and thanks.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  7 років тому

      Thank you Bill, I expanded into the mortice with my scrolling jaw chuck and that is it. I have 300 videos on my channel I hope you find some inspiration and useful tips and tricks that I drop as gems in the content. Thank you for noticing this one. This is my finishing video Gem! You found it and I hope you enjoyed and were inspired. I am changing my technique all the time, and that is the key to a successful journey, change it up all the time. If you feel comfortable change it up!

    Hi Eric,
    I turn many Aussies red ceder bowls here in Australia. I find that you do not need to use wire wool on this wood it does not need it. Please please use a mask and turn on your dust collectors when turning red ceder.

    Wonderful Erik... you have a great friend in Les, however this new wood you receive really annoys me! We have so few turnable species in the UK compared to what seems like hundreds in the US and now you are getting all the fabulous antipodean varieties too. Not fair ;-)

    how do you prevent tear-out from the inner side of the bowl? I can't seem to not get at least 1 section that just doesn't look good, even after sanding.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  5 років тому

      I will often times have small tearout areas even after shear scraping. sharp very sharp tools, shear scraping with your bowl gouge helps and very light passes. Once sanded wet sanding with walnut oil helps as well
