  • Giving eastern red cedar a go on the lathe once again. It’s been almost a year since my last adventures with cedar. Much has been learned since then so I figured things might go better. The bowl turned out great.... except....

    Sorry for your loss, but we do see all these lovely bowls being turned out by expert turners but never see their failures. So a first class effort to you and a thumbs up.

    • @KennettBTurned

      Bill Giles thanks Bill! I certainly won’t spend the time to video and not share due to failures. Many actually enjoy the failures more than the successes as a learning experience and to see how others come up with a work around. I know I’m definitely not an expert, and very capable of making mistakes 🤣.

    I have a small willow bowl that broke into 4 pieces. Too pretty to throw away so I glued it and kept it. Red Cedar can be full of surprises, but so colorful.

    JET 1221. Workhorse of a lathe!
    I turned a nice, but smaller, Eastern Red Cedar bowl a while back. The wood was wet, but not sopping wet. All went well. Nice piece if I say so myself. I put it on a shelf in my office with several other items I'd turned. A few weeks later I was in my office and heard a loud pop. After several minutes of eliminating things in my office that might go 'pop', I happened to look at the shelf with the turned pieces. My pretty little red cedar bowl had a chunk out of it - much as if I had pie-sliced it.
    I still have it to remind myself of the possible challenges of wet/green wood.

      Richard Parker thanks for the recommendation Richard. Typically I use a flat chisel and sand everything flat. What got me with this I think is I typically use a mortise, and when I do have a tenon it’s in hardwood and I have to go close so as not to tear the bottom of the bowl... doesn’t work on the soft cedar. I’m going to process another blank or two an get them ready to go... there will be another rematch! 😉

    Kennet - I am a bit upset (perhaps even angry)! We woodturners should not take such chances to prove a point. It is so easy to leave a stub, saw it off and sand smooth. It was such a beautiful bowl. Please!

    Sorry about the mishap it does happen from time to time. I finish off my bottom with the same setup although I've gotten into the habit of putting a few strips of blue tape from the back of the board across a part of the bowl I won't be using the tool on. It only takes 3-4 pieces, looks funny and sometimes sounds funny after it comes up to speed but helps keep it in place in case of an accident.

    • @KennettBTurned
      @KennettBTurned  4 роки тому

      Allen Mayles thanks for the tip Allen. If I go with a tenon again I might try that. Or I could not go so far and finish with a flat chisel and sanding 🤦‍♂️. It’s ok though I have a bunch more of the tree so we will return with it 😉

    Hi Mert, Stunning looking bowl. I love Red Cedar. Great shame the bowl went for a flying lesson. Any reason you didn't use Cole Jaws to take the tenon off? Cheers, Huw

    • @KennettBTurned
      @KennettBTurned  4 роки тому

      Wooden-It-Be-Nice thanks for watching Huw. Yeah a bit of a shame but my fault and I accepted it as soon as it happened. I don’t use cole jaws for a couple reasons mainly because the set I had lost more bowls than my face plate had (until this one). Now They are equal so I’ll probably pick up another, better set at some point. Secondly, on the nova chucks they are a pain to transfer on and off. But Santa has two new chucks on my list so hopefully I was good enough 🤣. The red cedar will come back for a rematch and eventually I will win... I have a whole tree of blanks, I’m bound to win one 🤔. Thanks
