Rough Turning A Cedar Bowl

  • In this video I rough out a cedar bowl from a log given to me by my friend Ellen. Her mother had a rather large cedar tree cut down and provided me with a couple of logs. Unforturnately the carpenter ants got to the log before I did and made a mess of it. I was able to salvage a few bowl blanks but most wasn't useable. I cut two blanks on the bandsaw but only show turning one. The process is pretty much the same for both bowls. I hope you enjoy...comments are always welcome.

It sure does! I clean up the chips with my dust collector and shop vac. They still smell of cedar every time in turn them on. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Nice bowl. Looking forward to the finished product. How long do you usually let something that large dry?

    • @slindsley1951

Gordon - I usually weigh the piece when it's finished, pack it way win a paper bag full of chips and forget about it for a few months. I keep checking the weight until it stays the same for a couple of months then it's good to go. Last time I checked this one it's still losing weight so it's not quite ready. How long depends on the species of wood, thickness, etc. I'd say 6 months for this one and it should be good. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Take care, Steve

+Mark Assante Mark - Thanks for the message. Glad to hear you just started turning. I'm sure you'll find it a lot of fun almost the point of being addicting. :-) Anytime you have a question or want to communicate just drop me a message on my channel and I'll get back to you. There are a lot of great turners on UA-cam and you'll be able to learn a lot by watching their videos. Good luck and stay in touch! Take care, Steve
