Great build. I'd have locked the nut in the back of the back jaw where you mistakenly had it. Then I'd have I'd have locked the thread in the wheel. That way the thread travels in and out with the wheel instead of bruising my hip every time I walk past it.
Good build brother! Even with the mistake, you thought pretty fast on your feet and got it done. I like it! I think you've convinced me to build one of these since I don't have a dedicated vice anywhere in my shop. Thanks for another great video!
I marked my Moxon vise piece's left right front back to avoid this. Thank you for making the mistake so I wouldn't. Ha ha. I throughly enjoyed the show. Thanks
Hahaha bro I feel your pain I just had one of those pick ups the other day at my shop and it’s always and starts looking so good and flowing so nicely that you realize that you’re screwed up.
Great video. I’m just starting the same project and really appreciate the magstop reference tip. I was planning to forgo the stabilizer because I thought adding the table would serve that purpose. Is there a reason for using both that I should know? Thank you for the video!
You will need the stabilizer for sure. There just isn't enough weight to keep it in place. You need to clamp the whole thing down to keep it from moving for sure.
If you put some springs between the jaws it will be easier to open it. Ask me how I know this. I have made one and I hated pulling the jaws out all the time.
Hi there. Thank you for replying. The clamps (maybe it’s not the correct English word sorry 😉) I’m talking about are the red o es you use to join the wood
A very nice result! So you don’t get any vertical racking when you use the vise with bench dogs? I had originally decided on a table on my build but then halfway in, I suddenly thought that it may not be a good idea after all. I know the holes in the front bar are oval horisontally and not vertically but the hole is just drilled in wood after all. How is your vise holding up?
@@CoffeyCustomBuildsI've only ever seen the old Moxon vice without the extra top. I'm curious how that addition has enhanced your woodworking. Possibly a follow-up video?
Sorry to say you went the hard way to fix something in a slightly different less common designs of moxon vice is not mistake, Some of the slightly different designs is a metal plate that goes between the two nuts that is bolted/screwed/clamped/magnet in place. The clamped/magnet into place is that you can push the threaded rod of the vice back inside the vice when you are not using it without having to undo the nuts the plate makes getting the nuts back into alignment to go back in simple.
I'm only 6 minutes into your video and hear see two mistakes already. You cut the front and back jaw to the same length? The back should be longer for clamping to the workbench. The oval holes in the front of a Moxon vice is not there to prevent racking when you pull it out, though it does that too. The whole point of making a Moxon vice is to allow racking and be able to securely clamp tapered items like table legs, guitar necks and other items with odd shapes. It also works well for normal flat shapes.
If you watch the video or look at the thumbnail you can see that I don't use the back jaw to hold it in place, I made a separate piece for that. Also, my statement isn't incorrect. It is correct. But what you said is also correct.
You have tens of thousands of dollars of tools there. I would assume you are making money actually turning projects for customers. I wonder where you find the time to shoot and edit youtube vids. I can’t imagine you are making a ton of money off youtube with less than 25k subscribers. It makes me scratch my head.
Oh it's far more than tens of thousands of dollars 🤣 I have a videographer who records and edits. The goal is to grow a channel and share content. I love making content and sharing it. That has some out of pocket expenses. Hopefully the investment is worth it.
Good to see a good sturdy vise on a bench that isn’t wobbling around underneath it. 🎉
I love this vise
Great. Now I want a moxon vise.
Been using it all week.
I like the magstop trick for the reference cut. Guess I’ll finally add a moxon vice to my new outfeed setup
The reference cut trick is clutch! I hope you liked the viddy!
Nice build - I enjoyed your reaction once realizing in the mistake, we all have them!
I was VERY unhappy!
We’ve all been there! Haha. That far off look while you’re trying to figure out what went wrong. You handled this better than I would. 😅 well done.
It got really messy after the camera was shut off and Pete left hahaha
Another straight banger…was the sound of tools being thrown against the wall when he realized in that moment that he f’ed up.
I was not happy. Had to walk around for 20 or so to calm down 🤣

I just avoid it.
Great build, easy to follow and you're getting into your stride with the videos now.
Thank you! It's starting to feel that way!
Amazing build - in essence you have a clamping mechanism with 2 bolts and very sophisticated wing nuts - I like it 🙂
Exactly

Good thing you made it out of pine so remaking it isn’t expensive 👍🏻
You didn't even watch did you? 😭
@@CoffeyCustomBuilds I watched the whole video my friend 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing your mistake and how you fixed it. Well done sir.
I think the fix method for doing the mortise is better than the original method.

It was an "ohhh nooooo" moment hahaha
Great fix.
Thank you
Sweet design. Good fix!

Hey the silver lining is we got to see you do it with the hollow chisel mortiser and with the template and router. We call that a 2fer.
It was a freebie 😂
Like your design a lot.
Thank you! I've added some hand pulls too. It's awesome!
Definitely watched for the thumbnail and title 🫠.
Gotta get you in somehow hahaha

Hahaha awesome!
That cut to black had me feeling all kinds of anxious tho 😂
Dude. I was pisssssssssed. However, the solution showed a better way, imo, to make the mortise. It was good all around!
@@CoffeyCustomBuilds agreed 100%. It was a great solution.
Nice save!
I like that it made me come up with a better mortising solution!
Hahaha bro I feel your pain I just had one of those pick ups the other day at my shop and it’s always and starts looking so good and flowing so nicely that you realize that you’re screwed up.
It hurts every time haha
Oh man, you pulled a Barnett! 😅
It's patented as Pulling a Dunlap.
@@CoffeyCustomBuilds oh thank God. 😅

Thank you! Ended up being a good solution and the mortising template is better than the mortiser in my opinion.

It worked out pretty well!

Good tip!
That - what looks like a Rockler or Kreg - stop on your drill press moves every time something touches it.
The rockler. Yeah it's got some slop for sure. I've got a replacement plan.
Really nice video! Looks like you found you rythme
Thanks man! Feeling really good about this!
Interesting. I would also put bolts on the inside. Cause when you tighten those wheels it builds pressure toward the outside. And bolts might pop out?
There are bolts on both sides. The mortise one on the inside and the one on the outside.
@@CoffeyCustomBuilds oh i see now! Thanks!
Nice video! Would a forstner bit work to make the recess for the nut? Or did you mortise it to make it square in order to hold the nut for tightening?
Thank you! You need a square hole for the nut b
Hi and thank you for sharing your video. Would you be so kind to share a link about where to find those clamps you use?

Its holding up great and I use it every day. This design has been around for hundreds of years. Invented in the 17th century by Joseph Moxon.
