Simon Sinek presents a simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question "Why?" His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers -- and as a counterpoint Tivo, which (until a recent court victory that tripled its stock price) appeared to be struggling.

"People don't buy what you do, They buy why you do it."
True line
basis of a strong value proposition. great quote!!!
I came here because of a tiktok video said he repeats it 7 times
hahaha actually it is not why you do it. But people buy if you don't do it for your own self interest, which is the reason they want to know why and compels buys unconciously.
No they don't. They buy for many reasons including vanity or shame or group socialization or they just need a good tool for a particular goal.

This talk is more than 10 years but it's the first one to make me realize just how important trust is and how hard it is to earn it.

I just spent a few hours writing down "why" I do what I do... it takes some effort but it'd worth it. this video is excellent, thank you!
Are you still reaping the benefits off of this, or was it just a phase?
I'd like to know too
If ask why 5 times to get to the core of why you do what you do it helps a ton. It's the basis for everything I do now. For my, my core why is to maximize the well-being of humanity, which is the ultimate basis of meaning.
I refuse to do this. It would just make me sad.

every time I hear one of this guys talks I feel like I learn more from his short talks then I do in 2-4 years of college.
Absolutely. I feel like Ted Talks are always worth of spending times listening to them.

I just bought and listened to his 1st two books on Audible. I've become obsessed with The Golden Circle and finding my personal "Why." I'll admit, I now go full "fanboy" over Somon's stuff.
Hahaha true
At 10:24 you can hear a plane roar by at the exact time he announces the Wright brothers success on taking flight for the first time. -Synchronicity
Amazing really, there are no coincidences
I read your comment at that exact moment!! Awesome!
I mean, it IS a presentation, and that sounded like a prop plane, why would a prop plane be flying over a convention center in Washington? It's probably just a sound effect to reinforce his point, and it was clearly VERY effective.
I was thinking the same, but then I heared another plane by the end of the speech@@chickenpotpie4045
@@daddywarbucsThat is the *definition* of a coincidence.
"People buy things that prove what they believe"... that was mind blowing. Even though it explains how to attract consumers, it also reveals answers to human behavior in other aspects of life . E.g. what a person believes about themselves and how they "buy" into ideals to "prove" their stance on it
"We believe what they believe and thats why they sacrifice their sweat tear and blood, not for you, but for what they believe."
So true.

Who’s here in 2020 with their “Why” ?
2020- 6-15
my mother
22/06/2020 :)
Cuz i have to wach it for colorguard
That is working in 2020 still and in future I believe, how about you?
This is such a great video with a powerful message: “people don’t buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it”!
HI MR KEITH HATHAWAY.
I LIKE THAT OPTION !THANKS
Agreed, BUT.... it's all results. He says 'this person tried making pkanes to get rich, but that was a result, not the WHY. The wright bro's wanted to change the WORLD"
... that's just a different result bro. WHY did that one guy try to invent flying machine? WHY? lots of reasons why. Why did the wright bro's do it? For other reasons.
Who's here in 2021 with their "Why"?
I came here to watch this amazing video again in 2023, which still motivates me.
Found my "WHY" a few months back and boy there's no turning back ever since that day !!
THEN TELL ME! I am very curious, and everyone who found his or her or their why, has to be heard!
Learning the keys to financial freedom -> Applying -> Sharing it with others to help them build their fortune
If I build people; people will build my business they will choose me for my “WHY” not for my “WHAT”
And how is that working out for you? Hope to hear good news :)
Can you give us an update
When Simon Sinek made the statement, "Great leaders think, act, and communicate the same way and it is completely backwards from everyone else," he did a fantastic job at both setting up the stage for his platform as well as genuinely grabbing my attention because from that point forward I was invested in his explanation to that statement. The Golden Circle model he created in regards to What, How, and Why is an excellent visual tool that simplified his explanation of how these inspired leaders think from the inside out versus how everyone else thinks from the outside in. I particularly liked how he linked his model to the layers in the human brain and how the outside part of the brain deals with language and the ability to understand figures and facts but the real accomplishment is speaking to the inside part of the brain that drives behavior and where decision-making originates. That is the part of the brain that the inspired leaders talk to and get you to believe in what they believe and create a sense of trust and loyalty as opposed to throwing facts and numbers at you.
I decided its time to rewatch this in 2022 . I get to enjoy this explanation at home while many dont have access to this . Realising this makes me feel lucky and blessed and i express gratitude
One of the most profound talks I've ever listened to, thank you Simon!!
The flow of his oration just makes this whole message that much more powerful.
Any 2019 pal? This video will never age and honestly he repeated peopledontbuywhatyoudotheybuywhyyoudoit so many times that it’s in my mind forever
Watching again and again
The message is so simple and yet so many people miss the point... I'm gonna print out that sentence in big and put it in some higher-ups' doors haha
I am here. This is timeless.
I guess he wanted to save that line inside viewers brain.
he talk that so fast 😂
Discovered this guy as a teen and forgot about him. Started an e-commerce that I shut down due to bad timing (high inflation, supply chain issues, pandemic) and seeing this dude speak decades later is like a fire started beneath my seat. Great speaker, Bout to consume a lot of vids on the guy.
This guy is doing a great cause for the world, by such wisdom.
Thank you Simon ❤️
10:27 "The Wright Brothers took flight" *sound of airplane passing over*
Good catch! I'm glad I wasn't the only one to notice it.
So I’m not hallucinating thanks god
A propeller drive plane at that.
Yeah! I was wondering if that was made with purpose or it's just coincidence?
what if ted always puts such easter eggs in all videos?

Every year I watch this video and learn new things. What a amazing talk Simon Sinek presents...
I have watched this video a multiple times before today, but today is the first time i have really understood what simon is really trying to communicate. Thankk you for this 💕
This is really true. When I am interviewing job candidates I barely look at the CV and transcript. I want to know what they believe and what they're passionate about.

You look super sweet. Can I have your IG or info?!

Sadly, many don't even know why they want the job!
Well.. why exactly do you do HR work? Everyone (I'd say 85% ppl) wants a job cos of money in the end. By not checking their CV you're saying their whole life has been useless up till now.
Is that a sound effect or a miraculous coincidence that the sound of air plane can be heard at 10:26 when he said "took flight"?
I think it was a coincidence, 'cause I heard it again a few minutes later.
I was about to write that same thing but then I saw your comment and gave it a

I learned this principle from a manager in the fitness industry. We called it the X factor- the “why” behind the “what” you want to accomplish. Been working well in my life.
It was a good speech, I loved the way he explained the importance of golden rule "starting with why"
with wonderful examples.
thank you
Really liked the “why” subject, how he talked about what is everyone’s “why” in life. We must take an initiative in our lives to become great leaders. Without having a “why” we will struggle becoming great leaders
I agree. I recently found my "Why" and ever since then I've had more opportunities and most importantly clarity.
His charisma is extrodinary!
I think he sounds kinda corny. Like he's trying too hard to be "inspiring"
Anand, as opposed to not inspiring?
@@anandpatel1074 I think you misinterpreted it for his confidence to be honest

The perfectly timed flyover at 10:24 is incredibly underrated.
This was eye opening. For the longest time I saw what other people do and saw what I waned to to do first and chased that with no avail. Looking back I have realized that I should come up with my own ‘why’ and do the things that fulfill that. Come up with a clear why than make a plan to achieve that propose.
i loved his book "start with why"! it's what got me to quit my dreaded day-job, start my own business and become more active on youtube. thank you, simon!

I was surprised to rediscover this TED Talk from over a decade ago, which perfectly aligns with my startup's vision under the guidance of our two founders: building a company with a clear 'why,' attract like-minded individuals who share the same beliefs, driven by a greater cause, purpose, and unwavering belief.
One of the best talks I've ever had the privilege of listening to. Thank you Simon.
This video has had a profound impact on me since the time I first saw it in 2012. It has been a part of change in my approach towards the way I present things , the way I train people , the way I look at things.
I have been revisiting this video over and over again and every time it sinks in more deeply.
Inspiring to the core.
It all begins with Why..
Thank you Simon for bringing out this to us.
Would love to really connect with you in person
Exactly how it got me. I knew all of this, but how Simon explains it makes it simple and tangible.
Really?..mind blowing you mean?
Very intelligent thing to do to revisit because to become good at anything or adapt a different mindset you need to use repitition
A hypnotic speech. He knows when he should stop, wait and talk again. Words are so clear you can even count. Voice tone is up and down to emphasize the words. That should be the way how a person gives a speech.
his power of thinking,,, just outstanding!!!❤️
This is among the best TED talks I've ever watched. Bravo!

Excellent session Simon as always has this skill to make people glued to his talk. Found this one a awesome takeaway to implement my own
Watching this video in 2024, what a video and strong messages from simon sunek!
It´s interesting to see how the impact of the message changes when you know where to start. Here it's shown that emotionality is important in the speech, finally achieving a connection with the audience is the key to success.
That's the reason why young kids starts their first questions with "why..."
one word to this speech: Wonderful ! I totally focused on this and actually it helps me a lots. And I came there not because I have to but I want to. Thank you so much for this, sir.
Upon attending a leadership training this week, Simon sinek golden circle used as a tool. Seriously eye opening for leaders
The best TED talk I've listened to. I love this guy's philosophy.
it’s not his. he even said so.
I’m about to start a new job and I was nervous but I feel armed with great insight now that I know the WHY. The company’s why, my why, and finding my customer’s why. So inspiring. Thank you!
Incredible how much its possible to learn from Simon
One of the very best Ted talks 👏. Excellent message and very well delivered indeed 👌
Simon is an amazing speaker. I enjoyed how he correlated the major components of the brain with the inside-out approach of the "golden circle." The traditional approach that works from the outside does not drive behavior. To inspire people to adopt a new idea, you must talk about what you believe and why. When people believe what you believe, they will support your cause.
This guy. Is a GENIUS!! Thank you for your inspiring Ted Talk!
I truly love this video. Thank you, Simon, Thank you so much!

Best Ted Talk Ever.
I’m admiring your unique thinking more and more, with every video, Simon!
2:42 Simply AMAZED.. Not at the concept (its not the first time I am seeing it) but at the fact that he just FLEW over the most important point "Profit is just a result". Results vs The Why is such a huge chasm of difference that some folks (a miniscule minority get). @ted if you are listening.. Please have this expanded on....
Here I come here in this video to watch it after 15 years... it's just awesome and to the point
The speech was awesome because he explained with simple examples and the enthusiasm and expressions of authenticity won me over.
I have to keep watching this to catch all of the gems!!! This INSPIRED me!!! WOW!!!
I keep coming back to this video every few years and am still shocked at how little of it has been reflected in the minds of our leaders in recent years.
It is up to us to do this ourselves! Over and over again - just hoping that something changes! changes nothing!
As other wise people have said: Change starts with each individual - immediately! The most difficult thing is to believe - the first step is the most important! and the 2 most difficult - to accept the fact, to accept, that after the first step a second and third and many more will follow and that one also sometimes takes the wrong way, recognizes this and learns - that it is not bad to take another way! Bad is - to stand still!
10:27 I like how he is explaining about the first flight and we can hear in the background the sound of a plane passing nearby.
My all-time favorite video. I loved the book, too. I re-watch this video a couple times a year. The concepts are simple, but being human, it is so easy to forget how important the "why" is. Thank you Simon!
I wish I was there to listen to him. Gave me strength to go to another level in my business.
Excellent talk. I changed our business' Mission Statement before it was done. Most amazing part was at 10:25 when he mentions how "eventually the Wright Brothers took flight...", and at that moment, you can hear a plane super close and loud fly over the building...
Using this for a work presentation. Key principle and great place to start

I love that when he says flight around 10:27 you can hear a plane in the background. It is perfect and sells it on a higher, albeit unintended, level. Or maybe it wasn't unintended and he is just that good?

Sensacional,
As pessoas se conectam através dos propósitos e os propósitos traz sentido a qualquer ação.
Anyone else notice the sound of a plane flying over when he mentioned the wright brothers taking first flight at 10:26?
you are not alone.
the sound was put intentionally
Some could disagree with you on this due to that this talk may have taken place near an airport. I will claim this because of I belive I noticed flight sounds in other parts of the video just because I where made extra aware of flight sounds after the the so called perfect catch at 10:26. Anyways, we would never have heard flightplanes if it where not for the extremely poor equipment used in this talk. So out of that point we can conclude that the organizers of this talk belong to the bottom 16% Sinek refers to on 11:26.

Yep, they don't teach that in the history books.
