  • In this video, part 3 of our assembling a mini-me vtec build Honda engine. the bottom end is from a D15Z4 non-vtec and the cylinder head is a P08 SOHC vtec head from a D16Z6.
We fit the cambelt, covers, pully, make a new pully keyway locking key, repaint both the gearbox and valve cover and fit an eBay Honda dress-up kit

Mini-me (Frankenstein for B-series) build is when you fit a vtec head on a non-vtec block to increase performance and add vtec to an engine that originally did not have vtec. this used to be a common build back in the mid-2000s before B Series engines became more affordable.
The plan for this engine is to be boosted with the aim of about 220whp/160wkw using all stock and spare shop parts.

Hi Scott, awesome! B16A is great motors, I will also soon work on some Bseries stuff, B18 with B16 Head. got the opportunity to get a civic with a B20v and a B18 motor all for a trade. glad you like it and found it entertaining! I do still make rookie mistakes but I can confirm the motor runs just fine and it will be going to the dyno soon. you can send me some pics of your build on insta if you want, would like to see.

I come upon this video after not being able to sell 2 d15s and sent them to recycling a week prior... I made 23 dollars for the scrap... haven't done a d15 build in about 5 years.
I will be trying to follow this build. Thanks for your passion, hondas are my favorite. My current FK8 isn't quite to the point of needing a full build, but someday, lol.

Hi Bro, yeah building Dseries is fun in terms of how cheap and easy to find everything is. and they can make some decent power stock, not enough to compete with the FK8 though. I have a CL9 with a K24, however they are not cheap to make power and can bankrupt me if I blow it up.

Hi, I don't know the Y5 motor, but it is a vtec-e, meaning it already have a P2J cylinder head, exact same cast as a Y8 head, (some say you can just swop out the cam+rockers to make a vtec-e to normal vtec) this is good because it will be a easy straight fit bolt on, "no mods needed" apart from the ecu as a vtec-e ecu triggers vtec at a different rpm, also it works a bit different so you will need some form of tunable ECU. here is some things to keep in mind, make sure the block does not have weird hi-comp pistons (it should not). make sure the head you are using has the big intake ports and thick valve springs (never use a PO7 head), get head studs if you can, Dseries love to lift heads under boost. don't run aggressive timing under boost. get 7 heat range spark plugs. don't make more than 220whp and you should be just fine.

The D16 rods are slightly longer than D15 rods just so you know. however if you are only doing a Vtec head swop the rods are not needed, the stock rods will do 200hp if they are the same as the B7. if you plan to boost later on do the rods and ARP Head studs. my motor is 100% stock and it was making 163whp at about 7psi
