@Gaytony For the average non Judeo-Christian it doesn’t make sense, because God is not, in their minds, the omnipotent, omniscient, being that he is. The Sabbath was a day that God set aside for the Jews, that happened once a week, in which they would not work, and its purpose was so that they would meditate on God and pray to him. God made the law because relationship with him is one of the most important things ever for a Judeo-Christian; for us, if we don’t meditate on God, we will very much likely fall into sin and temptations, and that’s why God cares so much about us keeping the Sabbath.

Our Sunday school teacher would reiterate that the Jews back then were very proficient in stoning, this was their number one skill, and they were able to kill with one strike, and they would usually finish striking with a second stone just to make sure. So stoning to death was a piece of cake not work. Therefore technically it was't sin.

What’s actually mind-boggling is that the Original Sin doctrine goes on, even though the main purpose of Jesus being crucified was to clense us from the original sin. The original sin was when Adam and Eve discovered they were naked and covered up. But i knew deep within my heart that my life must have reason to it. At the same time i was deeply depressed and was going to kill myself, there was no reason to live, i hated life and there would be no moral judgement of my life because God didn't exist. I was getting closer and closer to suicide and getting very deeply depressed with no way out. Then one day, on the bus on the way home from school i could feel Jesus was there. It was the most beautiful thing i'd ever experienced and he changed my heart, took away my depression and gave me a wonderful reason to live. It was the most real thing i'd ever experienced. Now in 2024, 38 years later i can look back and see how Jesus has always been with me, he's never let me down and he has been with me through thick and thin.

@Gaytony For the average non Judeo-Christian it doesn’t make sense, because God is not, in their minds, the omnipotent, omniscient, being that he is. The Sabbath was a day that God set aside for the Jews, that happened once a week, in which they would not work, and its purpose was so that they would meditate on God and pray to him. God made the law because relationship with him is one of the most important things ever for a Judeo-Christian; for us, if we don’t meditate on God, we will very much likely fall into sin and temptations, and that’s why God cares so much about us keeping the Sabbath.

Our Sunday school teacher would reiterate that the Jews back then were very proficient in stoning, this was their number one skill, and they were able to kill with one strike, and they would usually finish striking with a second stone just to make sure. So stoning to death was a piece of cake not work. Therefore technically it was't sin.

That's not what Christians believe. Man was alienated from God through rebellion and the sin nature now dominate on man required a intermediary and that is Jesus who's death was to pay the price for man's sin and make it possible for man be restored in relation to God. The sin nature is not removed by Jesus death he just paid the penalty for that sin.

This Jesus Mr Dawkins derides is really wonderful. When i was 17 i didn't believe in God because i'd never experienced him. My evolutionist education taught me there was no God. But i knew deep within my heart that my life must have reason to it. At the same time i was deeply depressed and was going to kill myself, there was no reason to live, i hated life and there would be no moral judgement of my life because God didn't exist. I was getting closer and closer to suicide and getting very deeply depressed with no way out. Then one day, on the bus on the way home from school i could feel Jesus was there. It was the most beautiful thing i'd ever experienced and he changed my heart, took away my depression and gave me a wonderful reason to live. It was the most real thing i'd ever experienced. Now in 2024, 38 years later i can look back and see how Jesus has always been with me, he's never let me down and he has been with me through thick and thin.

But nowhere does it say that we ought to approach every passage in scripture in the same way. We should approach each passage in a manner that is appropriate to the content of the passage. Poetry should be read as poetry. Parables as parables. Law as law. History as history. Apocalyptic literature as apocalyptic literature. etc.

Jesus told us to treat our neighbour as you would have yourself treated and I’m assuming you wouldn’t want to be raped, enslaved, tortured etc. Slavery isn’t wrong in the Bible but it does tell the masters to treat and love their slaves. God would never encourage slavery if it hurt, killed or mistreated the slaves, that’s human nature which causes that.
