That is - legitimately - my absolute favorite gag of the entire series. The man has just been riddled with three dozen bullets, burned his hand on a burning hot stove, yet it's ruining his jacket with wet paint that truly horrifies him.
The thing about Airplane and the Naked Gun movies is they get better the more you watch them, because there's a TON of little things that you miss the first time watching, so the rewatchability is really high. I've seen the first Naked Gun dozens of times and it wasn't even until watching your reaction that I noticed the luggage falling out of the plane in the beginning.
As mentioned elsewhere here, the closest you'll get to Airplane is 'Top Secret', made by the same director/writers. It has the same rapid fire comedy of Airplane, and is arguably their funniest movie.
I would suggest Hot Shots for more of the same kind of humor. Superhero is another good one, Fletch and it’s sequel should be considered required viewing!
Actually the origin of Frank Drebin was a six episode TV show called Police Squad! Which is why this movie carries the secondary title of From the Files of Police Squad! Leslie Nielsen starred in the show as well. There are two sequels to this movie, and pretty much the whole cast comes back for both of them. Well, minus the bad guys who die... The team member who tries to kill the queen is Reggie Jackson, a very famous baseball player. And in the car, they were eating pistachios. Companies used to dye the shells red, and the red color would rub off on your fingers, although most people didn't get it all over their lips.
@ChrisJ Fox Imported pistachios used to have blotchy shells due to bruising during shipping. The shells were dyed red to hide the imperfections, and the red dye used to come off on people's hands. Since the '80s, domestic pistachios are more common than imported, so the dye isn't used any more.
That's one of the lessons that the "Scary Movie" guys, who TRIED to emulate the style of ZAZ, failed to learn. You also see it in Nielsen's subsequent parodies (Spy Hard, Wrongfully Accused, etc.) The humor became MUCH more heavy-handed, rather than playing the story straight and the zaniness largely happening AROUND the characters.
You are so right about needing to make comedies like this. The parodies we get nowadays pale compared to stuff like this and Mel Brooks along with Airplane!

O.J Simpson getting so beaten up right in the beginning is probably a metajoke referencing to the Police Squad TV show they previously created. In it one of the running gags was introducing celebrity guest stars in the intro credits and then killing their characters before the intro was over.
Actually Frank's "origin" was in the TV show Police Squad, which was a comedy show (I think it only had 1 season). Then they put this movie out 5-ish so years later.

I've had the same reaction with a few really popular movies that a lot people really liked. It happens to us all at some point.
Hmm, I feel as though a good portion of the humour might've been overlooked/missed during the review. Many of the jokes are less obvious and easy to miss in Police Squad/Naked Gun compared to Airplane. Naked Gun 2 is even better, but part 3 is just okay. If you want a brilliant Zucker Bros comedy, check out "Top Secret".
What’s really funny, is Enrico Pallazzo couldn’t carry a tune to save his life. His rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner is him actually trying his hardest to sing the star spangled banner 🤣
Remember, when watching movies like that, just disconnect your brain. Never try to find any logic in there, anything rational, reason and logic left the chat at the minute you started the movie.
I really wish there is no need for you to say "This is my opinion. Please don't hate me for saying that." But I get it. Anyway, it's great to see you react to this one. Looking forward to the sequels.
