The thing about Airplane and the Naked Gun movies is they get better the more you watch them, because there's a TON of little things that you miss the first time watching, so the rewatchability is really high. Actually the origin of Frank Drebin was a six episode TV show called Police Squad! Which is why this movie carries the secondary title of From the Files of Police Squad! Leslie Nielsen starred in the show as well. There are two sequels to this movie, and pretty much the whole cast comes back for both of them. Well, minus the bad guys who die...
The team member who tries to kill the queen is Reggie Jackson, a very famous baseball player.
And in the car, they were eating pistachios. Companies used to dye the shells red, and the red color would rub off on your fingers, although most people didn't get it all over their lips.

@ChrisJ Fox Imported pistachios used to have blotchy shells due to bruising during shipping. The shells were dyed red to hide the imperfections, and the red dye used to come off on people's hands. Since the '80s, domestic pistachios are more common than imported, so the dye isn't used any more.

That's one of the lessons that the "Scary Movie" guys, who TRIED to emulate the style of ZAZ, failed to learn. You also see it in Nielsen's subsequent parodies (Spy Hard, Wrongfully Accused, etc.) The humor became MUCH more heavy-handed, rather than playing the story straight and the zaniness largely happening AROUND the characters.

While different, it's hard to overlook, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, What We Do in the Shadows, Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, Bubba Ho-Tep, My Name is Bruce and the series Ash vs Evil Dead, all pretty iconic, with the exception of the grossly under watched, My Name is Bruce, all of which have come out in the last 20 years! Great movie. I hope you also do the sequels. It is a very funny trilogy, This trilogy is based on a short lived tv series of 6 episodes of Police Squad that was a head of its time and canceled, The secretary in the movie that served the tea and was hypnotize is the directors mother she was also in airplane (the woman with the makeup). You should also see Top Secret another funny movie from the same directors of Airplane and this movie. Fyi The Shakespeare in the park bit is a spoof on dirty harry movie line.

A friend took me to this movie and I didn't expect much. I thought it would be more stupid than funny, but I ended up laughing so much and loved it. Don't worry it's fine if it didn't strike as much of a cord with you, you didn't try to not like it, it just happens. You were honest, and not rude about how you felt. I can understand. I've had the same reaction with a few really popular movies that a lot people really liked. It happens to us all at some point.

Hmm, I feel as though a good portion of the humour might've been overlooked/missed during the review. Many of the jokes are less obvious and easy to miss in Police Squad/Naked Gun compared to Airplane. Naked Gun 2 is even better, but part 3 is just okay. If you want a brilliant Zucker Bros comedy, check out "Top Secret".

Remember, when watching movies like that, just disconnect your brain. Never try to find any logic in there, anything rational, reason and logic left the chat at the minute you started the movie.

  • @Ambaryerno

This was actually an adaptation from a short-lived series called Police Squad (thus the subtitle, "From the Files of Police Squad!"). In fact, many of the gags in this film (and its sequels) were recycled from the show.
You didn't comment on it during the credits (at least on UA-cam) but the actress who plays Jane is Priscilla Presley, AKA THE Mrs. Elvis Presley.
Many of the umpires in the game are real American League (at the time, before the umpires were combined). In fact, there's a LOT of fans who especially love when Frank ejects Joe West. The announcers are ALSO real baseball announcers. Even some of the players are portrayed by real Major League ballplayers, too. The assassin, for instance, is hall of famer Reggie Jackson, who actually was playing for the Angels at the time the film was made.
This movie has perhaps the BEST use of rag doll sight gags of any I've ever seen.
Hope you at least give the remaining two movies a chance.
