Lyrics:
Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate
Desperate to control all and everything
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Terrified of being wrong, ultimatum prison cell
Saturn ascends
Choose one or ten
Hang on or be humbled again
Humbled again
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end
Saturn ascends, comes round again
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten
Ignorant to the damage done
Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate
Desperate to control all and everything
Unable to forgive these scarlet lettermen
Wear the grudge like a crown
Desperate to control
Unable to forgive and sinking deeper
Defining
Confining
And sinking deeper
Controlling
Defining
And we're sinking deeper
Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let's you choose what you will and will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent
Saturn comes back around
Lifts you up like a child
or drags you down like a stone
To consume you till you choose to let this go
Choose to let this go
Give away the stone
Let the oceans take and trans mutate this cold and fated anchor
Give away the stone
Let the waters kiss and trans mutate these leaden grudges into gold
Let go

TOOL is about to release an album, first in like 14 years. That's probably why it just popped up for you(trending now). If I were you, I'd start listening to their oldest stuff first. Seriously, it's so good. I credit this band(along with a couple of others) for keeping me from ending my life in my teen years. Things were super rough. Family wasn't there for me; only music. TOOL's music is therapeutic for a lot of people. It was very hard to find this stuff, which made it more adventurous, but still. ;)

"For the lyrics on Laterlus, I wanted to address the same kind of stuff as Ænima. I wanted to explore that sense of release, kind of combining archetypes with where we were in our lives at that point. On the previous album, we had gone through that whole transformation, what some refer to as the "Saturn return" - your 28th or 29th year, when you're given the opportunity to transform from whatever your hangups were before and to let the light of knowledge and experience lighten your load, so to speak, and let go of old patterns and embrace a new life. It's kind of the story of Jonah and the belly of the whale. You kind of sink or swim at that point. And a lot of people don't make it. Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain didn't quite make it past their Saturn return. For me, starting to recognize those patterns, it was very important to start constructing songs that chronicled that process, hoping that my gift back would be to share that path and hope that I could help somebody get past that spot. And the first step in that is just being aware of it." (MJK)

Instrumental perfection, perfect vocals, twists and turns, Maynard and company are not only artists but highly intellectual rock musicians that are the perfect blend of high energy relentless perfection.
Yes, highly intellectual band. Quality lyrics, great great music ❤
This track is about a battle with Saturn ascending and teaching us lessons over and over again until we get it right. "Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. Hang on or be humbled again" means get it right or Saturn will come around again teaching the same lesson until you do it. "The one the ten" could be the Aries and Capricorn houses in the zodiac (Capricorn is ruled by Saturn). A lot of what Tool Frontman 'Maynard James Keenan' is saying in the lyrics relates to characteristics of a Capricorn. They are known to hold grudges and be control freaks. Maynard is an Aries, the true pioneer of the zodiac. It could be a message for all the caps and people out there who hold grudges. The line, "Unable To Forgive Your Scarlet Lettermen" presumably refers to the classic novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. One of the main characters in the book is a female adulteress who is forced to wear a scarlet letter 'A' on her breast as punishment.
Interesting take on this song there is no question that all of there songs have hidden meanings.I would like to hear your opinion on there song anema?
@william schettler the word "ÆNIMA" is a blend of the word "anima", which is a proposed superficial "woman-like" spirit that exists in every man, and enima, a device that flushes out the rectal cavity with saline. this name literally means the "flushing out" of superficialness. The song is based off of Bill Hicks famous comedy but where he talks about California breaking off if America and floating away. Maynard used this to rant about all the superficial garbage that Is Los Angeles.
@@frankgio779 Thanks for the reply Dank, I lived in California for several years, and for me this song meant flushing out the rectal cavity, because California desperately needs a new start. I listened to this song for what felt like hours, coming to the realisation that I am not happy here, only doing this degree because it was something that my father didn't disprove of. I was angry at him and in turn angry at myself. I decided from that day forward I was going to make sure that I was going to do what made me happy and glad to simply be. I wasn't going to live my life accomplishing other people's goals except for my own.
This song and Tool have changed me, for the better. Cannot thank this group enough for that, they helped me forgive my father.
Well fucking said man. I am doing shit my own way now for 10+ years and life is so good. Pissing people off along the way only brings me satisfaction and I continue to be me out of spite. It's glorious.
This kind of stuff oughtta be top-comment here.
Wow. Thank you.
In the same boat
I Had a brief moment in time with a similar feeling when i was old enough to be told that I was adopted and that my Real Mother and Father were taken within 12 hours of each other right after Christmas Day. "Tis the season to be Jolly" hmmmm. Didn't have a chance to study at a college for any type of degree. But Alas, Here I am today, right now, enjoying this music and working from home on the architectural plans for a 50,000 s.f. Custom home along PCH1 in Pacific Palisades, Ca. I could have held a grudge and it would have held me back. I could choose to keep thinking about all that I lost or even never had but where is the Effen challenge with that. There are many things that you dont' get to choose but how you decide to deal with any situation is YOUR choice. When the dust settles anyone who is not on your side never was and that's fine by me. When the world tries to kick you in the ass, turn around take it with a smile then perry and punch that mother fucker right in the nose. Then you can laugh and say now that's done can we move on I got some shit to do. Que Next Tool Song.
Danny Carey said that this was the hardest song to play physically on the drums. He said that if he's not in shape, it will wear him out.
TOOL WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!!
At 45yrs old why do I still get chills when I hear that scream?
cause your a cool 45 year old from a new 56 year old tool fan ..lol
Means you are still alive.
I'm 43 yo and have chills too when I listen to this !
Cuz Maynard probably did this scream at a show when he was 45 (I’m literally guessing)
who doesn't?
it's one of the coolest screams i've ever heard
I have discovered that if you begin mining stone with a stone pickaxe in Minecraft just at the right time the amount of time it takes you to fully destroy the stone matches up with the guitar riff at the beginning of this song.
Such a mundane thing to notice 😂
Talk about a good drop from the block. :)
Coincidence? I think not
omg they thought about everything
Yo thats deep...
I will forever be in love with this band. I don't know how to describe their music other than it just being so freakin awesome. I mean there isn't a song that I dislike of theirs, the drums, the bass, the guitar and the vocals are just pure perfection on every song. Very rarely do I come across a band that has more than a couple songs I like and watching the videos for TOOL'S music makes me feel like I am being transported to another planet with all these strange creatures surrounding me. lol. Also, I can't relate to anyone who doesn't know who TOOL is, we def wouldn't be compatible because I talk about/listen to this band everyday. This is a band I have listened to since I was a teenager and some call it weird and wicked music but that's what I love about it, it's different and that's what I relate to. ❤
couldn’t have said it better myself brother, they are awesome
First time actively listening to this. Blew my face right off.
Haven't listened to Wings For Marie yet. Really enjoying my 'newcomer phase'
Let me know it goes mate. Lateralus is a great one too
@@michaelburman2108 I really enjoyed my first listen. Haven't checked out the lyrics yet. It seemed to convey sorrow. The theme in my head was some kind of departure. I imagined being in a space capsule leaving Earth and witnessing how it's torn apart while drifting into the black unknown.
Metalhead for 20 years.
Never listened to Tool.
Found missing piece of soul.
An old girlfriend mentioned this band to me, and it's one of the best thing's I've ever heard!
Welcome to the next level
I like music period but Maynard is very smart and intellectual
you should have stayed with her :p
Jesus man, you been living under a rock? Metalhead for 20 years and not hearing of tool until now? Have you been in a coma?
@@dustin3876 nah, I Just listened to Breakin' the Law 3,994,547 times.
The start of the best album of all time
Amen brother
Absolutely. I always say that every good band has a perfect album but songs that are as good or better outside of the masterpiece. Tool is a perfect example
Lateralus is my favorite of all time.
WE SCREAMING THE ENDING OF THE SONG WITH THIS ONE 🔥🔥🗣🗣
Tool is a little slice of heaven on earth.
Lyrics:
Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate
Desperate to control all and everything
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Terrified of being wrong, ultimatum prison cell
Saturn ascends
Choose one or ten
Hang on or be humbled again
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end
Saturn ascends, comes round again
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten
Ignorant to the damage done
Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate
Desperate to control all and everything
Unable to forgive these scarlet lettermen
Wear the grudge like a crown
Desperate to control
Unable to forgive and sinking deeper
Defining
Confining
And sinking deeper
Controlling
Defining
And we're sinking deeper
Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let's you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent
Saturn comes back around.
Lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone
To consume you till you choose to let this go
Choose to let this go
Give away the stone
Let the oceans take and trans mutate this cold and fated anchor
Give away the stone
Let the waters kiss and trans mutate these leaden grudges into gold
Let go
virgen
OMG😂🤔
You forgot the "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" part
Just discovered this song bout a month ago, but been listening to tool for 20 years😨
Thanks!
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of this masterpiece!!!
The buildup to 7:00 I have goosebumps every time, I'm in tears by the time it's over. So freeing to let it go, finally getting the weight off you.
Tool continues to be a force of healing. Music medicine
Tribute to my friend Robbie who passed away this May year in 2021 due to suicide...I'll miss you more than you'll ever know my dear friend. Your demons ended you but for me I want them to engulf me to survive 2021 beyond my friend. I hope you'll understand. He got me onto this album back in 2012 as a form of meditation but now he sadly didn't make it now, I owe it to him to carry on but my intentions are different to him. He lived by TOOL law and mantra yet the pandemic and family problems ended him, such a kind and giving man. We were the Yin and Yang here, the good died young and I lost a friend while myself neutral to villainous survives..Why is it the good never make it in this life?!...RIP 1986 to 2021...🥺👿😈😈👿😈
That's sad bro, hope he finally found the peace in death they couldn't find in life. Whether you do or don't believe, both of you and your families are in my prayers. Check out "Whole" by flaw if you haven't heard of it already....
This world isn't a place for good people. They can't help but be weighed down by the horrors of waking up to this strange place everyday. Hopefully, your friend finds himself in a better place, or perhaps a better time. I wish you the best.
All the best to you and sorry about your friend xo
So sorry for your loss
Just want to say thank you all for the kind comments here and yes I've also lost another friend and two family members myself both this and last year. But I'm no different from anyone else here and I don't seek to be as we've all lost something here and there. It's not about me I guess but sometimes I struggle sometimes waking up to figure how to use my friends teachings in this blasted 2021 here?! I often think: "No what?! How do I use the teachings in such an awful time such as now?!" I'll use them in my own way here and there. As for this planet/society?! It's damned itself and I don't have to do anything as it'll do itself. I'll just do the clean up should I survive?! Thanks and bless you all sigh...
That primal war cry toward the end... that's the sound of a man going into battle, roaring at the universe itself, to fight his own demons.
I'm seeing Tool this weekend and i'm so stoked
Just saw them last week. Best show overall out of the 9 that I have experienced
TOOL tapping into the anger of our youth. 🤘 Good for the soul. True musicians.
you are not wrong about tapping into the anger of our youth
"And we're sinking deeper"...
Some people are just better at their jobs than others....greatest band of all time
That part is the true start of the album for me
"and were sinking deeper" same thing they said on the titanic sub
Dude Tool just never stops to impress me
i know that feeling, the best song is the last you listened to
Hector Nah, the best song is The Grudge
Edit: Or third eye
Thats the point
Pure brillance.
It will never stop my man.
This is my current gym song
I guess I wasn't completely ready for Tool when I was younger. Pure chills.. I'm gonna have fun going through this catalog.
Same. I'm glad I appreciate it now it's actually changed my life not to sound corny AF.
@@tlwest21 Doesn't sound corny at all. I 1000% understand what you mean. They were fucking profound. For real.
I remember when this album came out and everyone I knew who liked Tool didn't like this album because it wasn't like the others. I thought they were f**king crazy. This album is awesome and always will be. This and Ticks and Leeches are some of the best songs they ever put out IMO.
The Patient is one of their most underrated songs imo. This album is a fucking masterpiece!
They are fucking crazy, this is tools best album in my opinion
@Eggchin X
This. It happened with 10,000 Days and now it’s happening with Fear Innoculum.
@@Pundit07 Fear Innoculum is their weakest album imo, tool isn't beyond criticism like some fanboys think.
@Brad Faulkner
I understand that they’re not beyond criticism, no doubt there. I also understand that people don’t really like the new album, I just think that the hate for it is a little overblown, it’s really not the worst thing ever.
One of the best album openings ever!
Tool and Soundgarden forever!
@@mellead8727 🤘🙌🤘
I've loved TOOL since 1997. I still find something new every time I listen to their work. And it IS work. What a fucking insanely brilliant band.
me when someone cuts me off in traffic
Danny Carey’s splash cymbal after “gold” is one of the best sounds ever
One of my top 10 favorite drummers
For sure, this song has a few perfect segways but the "gold" trigger is sucy a cool transition for what follows
Danny Carey my favorite drummer. No close second for me.👍
nobody hits harder than danny
Carey brings the end of the song to another dimension. He's not human. He can't be.
not just best of metal, best of music
I was one of the first in my country to buy undertow. Since then I've gone through pop, hip-hop,rap, only to come back to this. It is expansive and new cool.
A 29 second scream for a 29 year Saturn return. Genius.
Just like the Fibonacci thing with the title track, I highly doubt it was intentional.
This is my favorite Tool song. The outro is a masterpiece.
Been feeling depressed today. Scrolled thru my list of artists to play something that would make me feel anything. I scrolled thru the whole list couldnt find anything. Then I remembered Tool. The band that got me thru highschool and coooollege. I selected Lateralus turned it up and felt alive again.
How've you been?
@@soejrd24978 I was moved by your post. Thanks for that. Hope all the Tool freaks continue to stop in to refuel forever. This album is the one that sticks for me. Spiral out... keep going.
That scream Maynard lets out at 7:00 minutes is absolutely insane. It was like 25 seconds of full blast, hard core scream that very few people in the world could probably pull off. CRAZINESS
Heard this for the first time a few days ago, and 7:00 hit me like a truck. I’m still amazed, but that feeling was unbelievable
When Maynard goes down a roller coaster
6:59
Underrated comment
Great tune. Great concert rained hard and no one left. Medicated for your protection. Yes
I'm 45 and now i'm finally digging it.
Feels like after all these years my understanding of music matured.
it's 1am and I am sitting here absolutely floored by this music.
I am just realizing that this song is about forgiveness.. where the grudge like crown... Sinking deeper..
I don't think I've ever heard a better song than this. I've listened to a lot of artists, but this checks every box for me.
This was one of the TOOL songs I heard growing up, but didn't put much meaning to until I was older and had some things to really be mad about. Sounds like such an ANGRY song, but it's actually about letting go. Music heals.
