- Racer X Garage Episode 171: Is the Amazon 302-1 oil pan too good to be true? This is an affordable LS swap part that is a must have if using a rear sump setup in my opinion. i'll go over how much larger the 5.3 OE truck pan is in comparison while I install the shorter pan I need for my LS Swapped Dakota. No more scraping the ground!
I will not be providing a link as they often change on Amazon, but you can search "302-1 Oil Pan" or "81074 Oil Pan" and find a selection of oil pans for sale.
Compatible Oil Dipstick Part Numbers (according to Google, not verified):
GM #12669528 (dipstick)

Thanks so much! Its been a journey but well worth the effort! Keep with it!
1st video watched and i liked and subscribed. i ordered the amazon 302-1 holley knockoff pan to pu t tin my 6.0l ls swapped studebaker. Good info here. Look forward o seeing more.
Oh, thanks so much for the support! Good luck on your Studebaker!
I bought headbolts for my equinox on some goofy site for $1. Yes I did. Free shipping too
haha Nice. That can only go 1 of 2 ways. Godspeed!
I fell victim to the Amazon oil pan (oil pickup actually). I lost an LS2 and an lc9 before I realized what was going on. Make sure that once your pickup is bolted to the oil pump, it cannot pull back out of the pump. I had to buy a pickup from Jeg's for their pan that is just like it. The Jeg's pickup is WAY nicer than the Amazon pickup and thankfully, it works much better too and solved my issue. You need to read the recommendations from melling about which o-ring to use for what pickup.
You forgot the 2nd bolt in the pickup at the pump!
I totally get what you're saying, and appreciate the caution. I really happy of the fitment for the oil pickup, and while the 2nd bolt is nice to have for piece of mind, the 5.3's from the factory only use the one for the pickup. Since I bought this used, i dont have the extra hardware, but I have been thinking about finding one to throw in. We'll see... thanks for sharing your experience!
Adam, wow - I just lost my lm7 and the pickup oring was flattened. I’m ordering the jegs pickup. I had it in the cart and then just read this comment. Thanks man
@@KitchenDruski any part numbers
@@89bigbox hey man. So got an update for you. The Amazon pickup tube actually fits better. I used the melling o ring this time and will report back. Idk what happened but the jegs pickup tube actually bumped into the oil pan so I had to reuse the old tube with a new oring.
@@KitchenDruski thanks
good job Ryan your videos and my coffee go well together PS too early for beer thanks for sharing
I love my coffee more than beers! So I'm right with ya there Jerry!
By demintions 301-2 would be a better fit better fit for my dakota i need to get back to that .cant wait to see how it fits in yours
It fits fantastic! I show the fit in the last video i posted
Need to host a car show somewhere in Texas! Make a special spot for ls dakotas
That'd be cool, especially at a Mopar show where all the purists will be very mad
@@RacerXGarage Ive got one they wouldnt like, parts from corvettes, tahoes, mustangs, s10. Shoot, hockey pucks hold up my transmission.
@@Siegmund564anything but Mopar 😂
I bought an EBay oil pan for my 5.3 and it actually leaked oil thru the casting, the casting was full of sand holes
Yikes! Thanks, i'll be watching out!
Sht i got ine from ebay too...Like the actual pan itself ?!? ..
What I ring did you go with and did you have to cut the windage tray
I cant off hand remember the color of the o-ring, but you can test fit the ones that come in the gasket kit. One will be too large and will be obvious, or at least that was my experience. Also I matched the old one up.
Did you figure out what dip stick to use? I'm wondering the same thing.
Holley recommends the LS3 dipstick and tube for their 301-2 pan, which this is a copy of.
Adam, Is correct why not install the 2nd bolt in the oil pickup tube? Plus I would check and torque them! Piece of Mind is Priceless‼
There is nothing wrong with either of these. I've been using my tools for quite a while now and have checked tq a few times before so I'm just comfortable with it, but agreed it def does not hurt to check. As far as the second bolt, I bought this kit used, but I've been thinking about maybe finding another bolt to throw in, however, I believe the incorrect o-ring is more of the main reason for oil pressure issues.
I with the part number for the oil filter? 3506 won’t fit! Tia
I look up parts for a Holley 302-1 pan. You can find the instructions on Holley's website, and on it lists the dipstick and the recommended filter: Oil Filter (AC Delco® PF48 or PF48E, Mobile M1-113, Wix 57060, K&N HP-1017, or equivalent)
What did you use as a dip stick on that oil pan? Did it come with one or did you use the one from the stock oil pan?
a "LS3" style dipstick is what is recommended. I found one on ebay or amazon (don't remember).
Did that foam make a big difference on the ceiling?
Huge, eventually even though its ugly, ill do the walls too. Our summers are brutal, and this keeps the heat from radiating from the roof. It also keeps a lot of moisture out.
What is the oil filter that you use? I am putting the same oil pan on my 6.0 ls
The pan is designed similar to a LS3, but I still used the truck 5.3 part number, unfortunately I don't remember it off hand.
Did you make the whole and add the screw or did you leave it ?
Im not sure what you're referring to. I am thinking about adding the 2nd bolt in for the oil fill tube, but I hadn't done that yet if that is what you're referring to. I likely will because I think I need to locktite them.
My 95 Dakota is a 2.5. Will the factory mounts work on my 5.3 swap?
For the motor mount plates we use, you have to use v6/v8 motor stands and mounts, so no, unfortunately the 4 cyl mounts and stands are not compatible.
I had to get my lower mounts from a junkyard i had to pull a motor just for the mounts, i couldnt find them anywhere. But these 5.3 swaps in dakota are so easy
Bell broke because driveshaft is short
We had enough clearance and there was no issues with the tailshaft. We're pretty sure it was caused by the converter spacer.
copy cat ;) lol
I'm your huckleberry! lol
