- Junkyard LS Swaps are EVERYWHERE! Prices range from 600 bucks to 3500 on the used market, so WHICH ONES ARE WORTH THE MONEY?! We take a $2000 6.0 Gen 4 Truck Engine and put it against a $1000 5.3 Gen 4 with the same modifications! They get the same upgraded camshafts, springs and valvetrain, and the same induction setup, and we try to decide if the extra squeeze is worth the cash!

Every 6 liter ive bought has come with a truck attached. Buy a messed up Yukon Denali or something for $1500. Comes with all extra accessories and things you need. Part out the truck to recoup most or all of your initial cost and you're all set.
Luv the show
Do u have to degree the cam like i watch on horsepower tv or is that crap ? !!! Hope someone can answer
Most times when you buy a 6.0 out already it ends up having issues and everyone has a hard on for a 6.0. Best bang for buck is 5.3 with a cam and good 243/799/706 head.
Tell me where you can get a Yukon or denali for $1500....... 😅
@@1BigDaDo auctions. I've bought several.
In Michigan you can find them all day long, frames rusted out
The fact that you dont have a bunch of crazy back end staffing and a giant production is what makes this show awesome.
It keeps it real.
Hey do still take $3k handouts from advertisers and still call their builds "budget" and don't count it towards the total.
Summit's a proud sponsor for our "budget build"❤😂
Salty ass people
"So if you're still with us and haven't clicked the new vice grip garage video yet..." 😂😂 I'm a huge VGG fan and super appreciate the props and respect among the car community, especially the youtube car channel community. I knew I liked you, Tony (and the crew), but this just put the cherry on top! I'm already a subscriber and really appreciate your content and what y'all bring to us viewers. Thanks for being real and relatable!
This channel is much better than VGG in everyway, his formula is tired. TA is always doing something different.
VGG = muff cabbage.
We love VGG over here and we're good buddies!
That tickled me too, but VGG posts later.
VGG is in my queue, around 3 videos after this one. 👍🏻
Guys the show is a real winner so far . Down to earth builds and not a bunch of big budget stuff. Good vibes and friendly happy folks. Please Please Please dont change as you grow or sale out to tv types or start the money games with your viewers. I appreciate your hard work and bringing us good info and entertainment. 🛠️💪🇺🇲👍✝️🙏
Agreed. I get tired of the big budget shows acting like they are stuck with some kind of tight ass budget, but then they show tens of thousands of dollars of parts they are throwing at a "budget" immaculate car.
Anyone else catch the belt walk on the 6.0L at 38:43? Keep an eye on that accessory drive boys!
I think that’s a hose you’re seeing bouncing around. The belt from the tensioner pulley goes at a steep angle down to go under the water pump pulley
It definitely moved.
@@thundermug496 I agree, that the belt for sure moved, I watched it three times.
It wobbled around and then jumped ribs, but in the next shot they had already fixed it. So clearly they knew
i see it now!@@xjsc16x
You and Derek should do an annual collaborative video called "Cold Snacks and Pizza" - Seriously appreciate the work you guys are putting in!
Hahaha that would be a blast. Thanks for watching!
Love what y'all have been doing lately. Just a better vibe compared to the Motor Trend & Hagerty stuff. Can't wait to see more Sikeclone stuff... I'd love to build something similar someday using a Olds Bravada chassis body-swapped with a late-model Corvair I have sitting around.
I no a 6.0 liter LS stock has 405 HP how do you put couple Grand in motor and it only makes 350 HP doesn't make any sense
Use the same heads
I've never seen anybody chassis Dyno just a chassis before that's badass!!
Now you've seen it all!
They don’t call it a chassis Dyno for nothing…
L😂L
Thank you for consistently putting out quality content for myself and everyone to enjoy every week. Love you guys!
I've had all three and the best is the ignored 4.8. Find an early 2000 Yukon or GMC as a donor. That 4.8 will outlast the other 2 no problem. And you are right the new VGG video was great as always. But I am here so you DONT LOSE THE SHOP
Appreciate ya!
So what's so great about the 4.8 ? You didn't even give some specifics about pros and cons, please give the comment section some proper information on why you say get a 4.8 instead of a 5.3/ 6.0 ?
Study all three engines. Architecture, specifications, block designs etc. I can't lay it all out in the comments section. Start with Wikipedia for example. If you do then you will have learned the differences and decide which is best for your application. For me from my own experiences I properly prefer the performance of the 4.8 But make up your own mind and go with that works for you.@@hajileserpud9539
@@hajileserpud9539 For budget builds they just hold up the longest. It comes down to bore/stroke. The 4.8/5.3 have smaller bores which means less pressure on the rod. Keeping the power lower at lower rpm really helps keep the engine alive. The 4.8 has a shorter stroke, moving that power band even higher, helping the rods out further. The bigger displacement engines tend to spool the turbo sooner which further stresses the rods. Simply put, at 700hp on all 3 engines the 6.0 sees the most stress over the entire rpm band and higher peak torque. The lq4 has come down in price a lot in the past few years so I tend to go with that for a higher ceiling potential and lower rpm grunt.
@@mickrambo6787more stress equals more output overall. I use 6.0 for everything. They like to go full blast and come back for more, time again and more. Why bother with loosing displacement? I’m talking factory engines in the trucks it came in being tortured in the line of commercial duty. Talking every generation of 6.0ls, from the 99 cast head first versions I had were a beast! And all the one ton dump trucks and fleet vehicles that got disrespected by random employees and other negligence. Skirt slap and all. Nobody should ever shy away from a 6.0 for a street built and stock engine because of reliability. That’s Ludacris
That cylinder head flip 😳😂😂😂😂
I was like 😮 That could've been an expensive mistake.
Coming home from work and seeing Stay Tuned posted a video, makes life 100 times better.
YUS SUH!!!!
Hell yea man, thanks for watching!
I'm going with the 4.2 Vortec. Not following the crowd.
You guys are killing it cranking out high quality content like this! Really appreciate the hard work you boys do. Also Tony you took that nose waxing like a champ. I pluck one nose hair and my eyes start watering and I go into a sneezing fit.
Friggin awesome! Damn entertaining. Tony's always been real, the boys are great!
Content perfect for local shop boys, everyone looking for more power, knowledge and know how. Very cool!
Never a waste of time.
Thanks.
Ayyy a shout out to our guy at VGG. Talent recognizes talent
Derek rules!
clearly 4.8 is the way to go
She's so great my four-point-eight.
Everytime I've pulled a 4.8 from the yard they have always been so clean. Not beat on. The 5.3s are hit and miss and the 6.0s always had bad cam bearings.
Sloppy Mechanics really proved that the 4.8s are just as capable
You mean four point great!
Nothing but motor-on-frame on Dyno is probably the coolest dyno run if seen yet.
Love how you guys did a real “a” to “b” test! Love the channel!
I honestly love some LS shenanigans. So glad youre making UA-cam work!
for a 24x 5.3 the L33 code is the unicorn. aluminum block, 799 heads, gen 4 rods, 4.8 flat top pistons and a slightly bigger cam. came out of a 2004-2007 silverado Z71 4x4
i think they only come in the extended cabs. i have them in both my trucks been pretty good to 400,000 km. i wanna refresh one for a project
That's a hot rod engine right there!
I found one in a rotted out 2005 Silverado with 144'000 on the clock. Saving that little gem for a V8 S10 swap with a 200r4.
L33 is very overrated! Any gen4 5.3 will do just as well or better for less money.
@BlueWaterSpeedMarine the only benefit of an L33 or LC9 is the siamese bores. But if youre not trying to make 1300whp then it doesnt even matter
It was a bummer that the 5.3 wasn’t happy, great series ! I’d love to see you do Ameri-Barra GM 4200 sleeper 👌
You could actually hear the difference, that 6.0 sounds awesome. Tony took the nose waxing like a man.
I can't think of a single youtube or professionally produced show as good as you do it. You brought the thunder on HRG with awesome projects, doing it again here, VGG is one side of American UA-cam, Mullet country boys, who you have to watch on 1.75 speed as they talk so slow, and do the same content over and over, then you guys the other side, the drive to do new projects, and really put in the effort, nothing else like it!
One of (there are more) the things I have really liked about your channel is that you DON’T build the same things as other channels. And now another LS video. Sigh…. I do have to say that running a chassis (only) on a chassis dyno is a first and was hilarious! As was the ending. You are a stand up guy for showing that! 👍
IDK, I love the LS platform, it was pretty new to them, so damn easy to build. And that 5.3 was a fail for sure, it's got problems. the 6.0 was on par though.
living fresh with that open drive line
HAHA, I was pretty far away but def sketchy as hell.
BA video bros!!!!!! We need videos like this. This is really great and important to see the differences. This also inspires mad confidence to build!
I cant get enough of this channel.. yall are some down to earth folks..
It's Friday! Time to hang w/ the fellas!
TGIF!
I’m stoked on this video! I just got a Yukon for free with a 5.3 as my donor vehicle for my 98 s10. I’ve been gathering parts and knowledge to do the swap! I’m nervous but can’t wait!
Good luck with the project!
do your homework.....ALOT of mods you have to do to make that fit. One reason I opted for a 350 for my 96 Jimmy.......its just a 4.3 but longer.
@@yurimodin7333I have been watching and reading everything I can! I originally was going to go old school sbc but this was free. My dad and I painted the truck, and it’s dropped 3 inches. It’s looks really good, so this swap has to be perfect 🤞🏻
@@StayTunedTAthank you! I love the channel, and I’ve been a fan since you started on HRG, keep up the great work!!
I've got a 99 zr2 s10 with a 5.3. A ton of time and a boatload of money later, and the engine looks like it came in the truck from the factory!
I think its great Tony went independent. I remember all the articles I read in Hot Rod magazine and just thinking only if I had unlimited money to buy all those high dollar parts. Now then as Im adult I pay the bills first before even thinking about blowing money on just a toy, these days its about survival. Not everybody is getting sponsor kickbacks because i freely made a commercial selling your hot rod parts.Toneys show is great for the real world auto guys.
Fantastic video and topic! I'm considering an LS swap into my Chevelle and have gone back and forth about whether to do the 5.3 or the 6.0. Much appreciated, y'all are killin it!
Loved the bet! Great idea for a video. I had always wondered about the differences. Thanks gents
Thanks for watching!
My 2004 Silverado 2500HD has the LQ4 6.0 and love it. My understanding is the 5.3 is more for HP and the 6.0 is for torque. That's what i read, anyway. 248000 miles and going strong.
6.0 it's 345 horsepower 370.... I don't know what the 5.3 is depends what year... Cuz if I remember they go from 285 all the way to like 340
Love your channel! I am following Tony from his first days in Motortrend. Your team is awesome as well. Keep it up!
I'm in the market and I was searching for this exact info. awesome timing. thank you.
I hope there will be an update video for when things get lined out with the 5.3. Great video.
The 6.0 already had the advantage of more displacement but the 823 rec port heads will out flow the 799 cathedral port heads without even trying. all day long not a fair test ! But a fun test overall 😎👍
Was looking for this comment before making it my self.
I have 799 heads. Can I still use the same intake manifold with the 823 heads?
I do believe they make an adapter. But I could be wrong. But no it will not work as is
both heads wer 243s
@1pimpmuke4life wrong. and wrong again cathedral ports were 799's. and the rec ports were 823's. 5.3 had cath. 6.0 had rec
Tony has come a long way since I first saw him on motortrend. This is so entertaining
Great builds , crazy news paper clipping , but to have that clipping this long is more insane. T&A always bring it , hands down the best channel going . Cheers 🇨🇦

great content and what an undertaking thanks for the raw content brother. keep it up we love it.
Summit cams generally use smaller base circles meaning the 7.4 pushrods are on the short side. They'll work but they'll be noisy. Combine that with low oil pressure not providing the lifters with enough volume/pressure to pump up properly and that will definitely set you back 40-50 hp.
Hope the bronze trunnions work out for you. They also offer C clip needle bearing trunnions which I'd go with over the bronze
You guys are great fun. Love the builds, AWD S-10 is my favorite so far. Also the best music on the tube!

I wonder if a leakdown would help diagnose the power problem on the 5.3?
Stay safe guys. That unrestrained driveshaft had me worried.
Can't wait to see some AWD goodness!!!
It would be odd not to leakdown test every engine on the stand during preinstall inspection. My bro and I briefly run them on engine stands. We always get the harnesses and I delete ATS when I download then reflash the ECUs. (OBDX make some great adapters, just get a blue connector to spare to make yourself a bench harness.)
You guys s cranking out great content.
Good job.
Huge respect to the guy that builds his own engines 🙏 ,to many people using a company to do the builds ,anyone can get a crate engine
You guys crack me up.
Hoping my 5.3 build goes well, also hoping you get yours squared away.
A real chassis dyno! Awesome! 😎👍
Haha, yeah, we just have to get all the motor mounts for it and we are good to go anytime.
I do know that if you get an older 4.8 5.3 block and it has to be stamped 4.8/5.3. Those have walls thick enough that you can bore them out to LS1 pistons. Also the 5.3 has a dish piston and the 4.8 had a flattop piston giving it a higher compression ratio than the 5.3 in a way to boost power. So don’t shy away from an older quality 4.8 motor. Keep the flattop pistons and put a 5.3 crank in it and have fun.
A 4.8 and a dished piston 5.3 are within 10hp with stock heads and the same mods n/a, the difference is the extra tq the 5.3 makes. I wouldn't waste my time turning a 5.3 into an LS1 unless you have very special circumstances, like having the pistons laying around, able to get the machine work done dirt cheap and it's n/a only. If you're using boost don't waste your time or money on machine work or heads, just a cam+springs, fuel system, converter, turbo a 4.8/5.3 with 706/862 heads, no need to use 243/799 on anything smaller than 6.0 and I wouldn't on a 6.0 for the extra tq under the curve vs 10hp or less for 800rpms at the very top, rec ports on a flat top piston 6.0 are a compromise and a half, maybe they make more power with the largest cam they allow p-v for vs the same on with cathedral ports, however the cathedral ports allow significantly more cam, build more compression, make more tq, have less valvetrain to issues with budget parts, cost less, spool quicker, better throttle response, better part throttle driving and economy. I can't see using an 821/823 head on less than a 388/402/408/416/427/442/454/468. A ported, milled 243/799 on a 5.7/6.0/6.2/383/402/408/416/427 or ported, milled and possibly upgraded to 2' intake valve 706/862 is better for a flat top 5.3/5.7/6.0/6.2/383 then 706/862 ported, milled with std valves on a 4.8/5.3/5.7/6.0.
If you swap the crank all you'll have is a 4.8. The 4.8 and 5.3 used the same crank
You know my Friday evenings so well! Stay tuned followed by VGG. Can’t go wrong with either!

@@mynameis63 an N/A 370 isn't really the best bang for the buck if pure power is the goal, a 4.8/,4,L80e pullout from a Van with a cam+springs, converter, shift kit/double feed and a basic Don't BS Me GT45 build will put down a strong 550-600whp on Diehl Paving,'s stingy Dyno and run solid 10s if not high 9s in a Fox weight platform for less than most people can buy a used 6.0 for much less send one off to the machine shop and do a full on performance build, most N/A engines will need significantly more peak HP to run those times because they can't generate the TQ curve these turbo engines make under the curve. Are you sure you didn’t get a 4.8? It’s been awhile but the flat top pistons with the crosses on them use to be 4.8 ones. Most of the flattop gen 4 5.3 stuff I seen either was smooth with the single dot or valve relief
Man, you have got me thinking. I was told it was a 5.3 by Brad who acquired it for us and this was such a haul we just threw parts at it! If it is a 4.8 then maybe we aren't too far off on power!
@@StayTunedTA just a thought wouldn’t be the first person how honest bought or sold a 4.8 that was thought to be a 5.3. Was it originally a dod engine or non dod? If it was non dod to start it’s probably a 4.8

@@StayTunedTAI tried looking at pistons in video. Took screenshots and blew up. They look flat top to me, but pic quality is poor. Compression being 180... I thought 4.8L.
If your going to have a junkyard LS on the engine stand throwing parts at it, might as well replace the oil pick up o-ring, (barbell) galley plug, front & rear main seal and cam plate just for reassurance.
Yeah if you're spending money the barbell is so cheap to just replace... Everyone does this at least once though lol

I always watch your videos first on Friday nights because VGG is so much longer but you’re always more fun
I'd really like a caprice with a 6.0!
Those PPVs are great, if you can find a clean car in the $6-9k range, these a lot of sleeper goodness there and it can double as a family car, best part is the apple juice and cheerio dust comes off the rubber floor and vinyl seats easy and no child seat sized human can kick the back of your seat.
L77 FTW! Those aluminum block 6.0's are hard to come by for sure!
those bushings wore out and grooved on mine within 10k miles. CHE bushings have been issue free however.
Thanks, gentlemen! That was a shitload of wrenching...Thanks for bringing us along your LS journey! ✌️❤️🙂🇨🇦
The main thing that you get with the 6.0 is the much better squareport heads. Also LY6 is VVT not DOD. My LY6 with stock everything but slightly smaller cam (.590 lift) made 399hp 399ft/lb at the wheels through a manual. Something is very wrong with that 6.0
I was thinking the same thing, my 5.7 LS-6 with a similar size cam and very mildly worked heads made 404/350 through a manual. I figured a 6.0 with square ports would do a good bit better
The hi-ram intake is the problem. They'd get that power back with a composite long runner intake.
I commented the same thing.2000 6.0, SS2, long tubes, 799, 42lb injectors made 400/390 at the wheel. That 6.0 is not functioning properly
I think we all agree it’s at least 50hp off. I always use a FAST and long tubes but they should be 400 minimum as there’s sit. The intake manifold they are using SUCK under 7000 RPM.
The 275 ft/lb of tq is what is really really concerning
Those manifolds are killing a quite a bit of power. I made 420whp on a dynapack dyno through a 200-4r, and 7.5 inch rear, with the same cam/springs, 317 heads on an otherwise bone stock LQ4.
Very true. It'd be good to see long tubes with 18" header extensions.
Closed loop too for an optimum setup.
I made 420whp with manifolds on my L77 6.0 thru a manual trans.
💯
