- China and Russia conducted a joint naval operation near Alaska's southwestern coast involving 11 vessels. This prompted a response from the US, which dispatched four Navy destroyers and a P-8 Poseidon aircraft to monitor and guide the foreign vessels away from its territory. Although the Chinese and Russian fleets approached the Aleutian Islands, they did not enter US territorial waters. US Senator Dan Sullivan emphasised the improved US response compared to a less forceful reaction in 2022, underscoring the need for more naval assets in the region, including icebreakers. The recent manoeuvres come against a backdrop of heightened tensions, with previous close encounters by Chinese and Russian vessels near US territories and growing concerns about Russia's historical claims to Alaska, once purchased by the US from Russia in 1867.

I’m American and I absolutely agree with you. International waters are 200 nautical miles off the coastline of a country. The 200 nautical miles is where the country owns the resources of. 12 nautical miles off the cost is international waters. They have remained in international waters and are there to ensure the Chinese don't harass others sailing through international waters. They (the Chinese) do not own those waters. Secondly, U.S. ships responding to Chinese and Russian ships near Alaska are just a response to illustrate to them that if they DID venture into U.S. waters, they would be dealt with. That's all. Notice that at no time did those U.S. ships harass the Chinese ships, unlike what the Chinese have done and continue to do to Taiwan.

Russia sold Alaska to America because at the time (just after losing the Crimean War) Russia was very concerned that the British would attack and conquer Alaska if they didn't. Britain was the world superpower in the mid 1800's, and Alaska had a Russian population of only 2,500.
