Putin's Radar-Evading Missiles Spook US, Russia Warns It's Picking Sites For Pre-Emptive Deployment

- Russia is pre-emptively planning deployment sites of intermediate- and shorter-range missiles. The plans are in response to a potential US move to deploy such weapons, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov. Ryabkov also warned that while Moscow's nuclear war policy hasn't changed, the situation is fluid. Ryabkov’s warning comes days after Russia’s defence ministry said it had launched preparations for a nuclear weapons drills in southern Russia. This comes as the commander of the US Northern Command said Russia has expanded its inventory of radar-evading ICBM*s over the past year. According to General Gregory Guillot, the ICBMs are armed with a hypersonic glide vehicle that is capable of evading radars. Watch the video to find out more.

You failed to mention that while Russia quite promptly ratified the treaty with the US banning short and medium-range nuclear-capable missiles, the US kept dragging out the ratification it had agreed to do and in the end never did it.

The hypersonic missiles are only hypersonic for a small portion of their flight in the lower atmosphere. Once the missile is in the lower atmosphere the fuel burn to maintain hypersonic speed becomes huge, limiting the distance to a few hundred km. When the atmosphere is thin or zero (most of its flight) then it cannot maneuver with unusual agility since control surfaces do not have enough effect to make sharp moves and have no advantage over interceptor missiles. If Russia or China launched a hypersonic missile at the US it would be detected during the boost phase by the 13 US early-warning so that a moderate to large scale surprise first strike is unlikely. On the other hand, Russia has just 6 early-warning satellites which leaves gaps in their coverage. Additionally, the US has 20 stealth B-2 bombers operational and in 2024 there should be 6 stealth B-21 bombers operational. These aircraft can drop a nuclear bomb on target with only a few seconds of warning (when the bomb bay doors open). Additionally, the F-22 can be used to nuke Russia from US bases in Germany. The B-2, B-21 and F-22 are undetectable except by low frequency radar when the aircraft is near by but the signal is ambiguous and insufficient to use for missile targeting. The Russian hypersonic missiles fall far short of what the US has in its nuke menu. Obviously, the US would prefer Russia to have nothing of value to threaten the US with. The Russian ballistic missile submarines remain the main threat, but this is old news. It's more fun (and more clicks) to talk about high tech hypersonic glide vehicles.

Launch would be detected, but it can't be tracked all the way from launch to target. This is why ballistic missile interception relies on predicting the flight path, which can't be done for a HGV. So while a HGV might not have a maneuvering advantage over an interceptor once both are fully up to speed, it's location and direction etc. will be known too late for the interceptor to get up to speed and into the right area etc. Also, to hit a target generally requires 3 times the maneuverability of the target, not just equal maneuverability. This is why air-to-air missiles have 30g of acceleration even though fighters only have about 9g. I don't know if any interceptors can manage 3 times the maneuverability of an HGV, and even if any of them can what would the US have to test them against? Nothing, so they must be untested. Russia and China make these things because of progressing missile defense ability. Ballistic missile subs are the main threat, but probably not for very much longer. Look at what happened in Israel, over a hundred ballistic missiles shot down. The writing seems to be on the wall for the traditional ICBM as a guarantee of retaliation. And HS weapons take decades to develop, they had to start when they did, not knowing how quickly BMD would develop or how many interceptors the US would produce.
