fortunately l learnt about menstrual cycle by my dad . I am so lucky , He told me everything about female body because i dont have mother to tell all these . Thanks Dad
I also don't have mom but my dad is very orthodox type, he thinks mensuration is taboo 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭no body supports me, what can I do? Help guys plz🙏🙏🙏🙏😿😿😿
some person Yes, it's important for men too, because it's about the human body. BTW, there are still many people/men who don't know that women don't urinate from their vagina!!!
Yes. I am so lucky that my school is good enough to take around 2-3 workshops about periods when I was in grade 5. My teacher even drew a diagram of it.
Yes we make it a taboo right from the beginning by not including them in such sessions in school and talking about it in hushed voices at homes and then suddenly we want to them to normalise this and accept it but we need to understand it will take time for them too
Here's my two cents; this unspoken rule of not talking about your period is actually a major hindrance in day-to-day life. I remember being in class and starting my period, and not being excused to go to the bathroom because I was told to hold it. But you can't hold in a period, so I was sitting there, too embarrassed and basically unable to communicate what was really happening to my male teacher, and having my underwear spotted with blood by the time class was over. I don't just want periods to be talking about, I want them to a part of absolute normalcy. When I'm in a meeting, I want to be able to say that I just need to go get a tampon really quick as easily as saying that I've got a nosebleed and need to run and grab some tissues. No shame, no embarrassment, no period jokes, because when half of the population experiences this every month, it should not be such a big deal.
2 minutes silence for the people who unliked it. What's wrong in speaking about the truths. People are uselessly disliking a social awareness initiative.
I agree. The education on menstruation is important for them as well also considering movies, webseries and songs are over exposing them to the concept of making out and stuff. They need to know the effects of their actions on there own and the girls life. It will help raise a well aware generation. Instead of making fun of girls in periods about mood swings, etc. They will be more considerate and contribute in making world a lil better place for the girls and themselves.
An admirable and innovative way to teach about menstruation. But why should girls only learn about period? Why not the boys alike? After all it is a natural process that creates life.
I agree boys should know too. I was 12 when i heard friends talking about bleeding to death. I ran home asked mum and she was clearly embarrassed. I was determined not to do the same with my daughter. We celebrated her first period even her father and brother got in on the act. I told her how special thks gift is. To be able to one day give birth.
U r 100% ri8..even boys should know this biological process and yes why would we feel embraced while discussing, If the boys would know then they will pass it to their child, in this way we at time later can be able to eliminate this inhuman way of maintaining menstruation.
I appretiate the initiative that you took but in addition to that i want to suggest u that u should also teach boys about periods. This thing will help alot in removing this taboo... And everyone will be comfortable in talking about periods.
Hey, I've a non profit organization where period education is provided to both young girls and boys. Please do check it out if you wish to. @ensuretheprojectcodered on Instagram.❤️
urgent topic to talk?yess...Aditi is 100% right about low level of awareness related to menstruation. In Delhi along with seven other metro cities,SHARP NGO is running this initiative with the help of Unicharm India.
thank you for spreading awareness! we need to talk about this more naturally. also men need to know about it too. there's literally married men with four kids who have no idea what a period is.
Both boys and girls should learn about periods when they're ten, before even the majority of early bloomers start getting them. That way girls aren't terrified that they're dying, and both genders are educated. Men need to interact with women and the overwhelming majority will have a sexual relationship with a woman at some point. They should be informed, both so they understand women better (and don't think women become irrational monsters on their periods, as some seem to think) and so they can educate female partners who don't know much about periods.
When I was in 10th class I gave a speech on menstruation for my english elocution competition. My teachers, friends and students were surprised by my speech..... also some of my female friends asked me not to give a speech on menstruation. Atlast when it was time of prize distribution everyone was screaming my name but I didn't won because of my accent maybe but my principal and teachers appreciated me on stage for being confident and spoke about a taboo topic. Later my juniors, seniors, friends everyone appreciated me.
i think every single girl should be taught about periods and about its whole process . they should be make aware that it is not a curse i think that it should be shown to older women first because they are the ones who taught the young girls about it and the restrictions during their periods , not to eat pickle or not to go to the temple or not to touch religious plants and many many more things . but with girls boys should also be taught about it to broke the mith but ya salute to aditi for doing all these things just amazing👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Sanaya Sanaya U r right. The most important thing is the religious taboo. I never followed them because I don't find any logic behind them, but everywhere I face harsh criticism from the girls even younger to me for praying and touching religious idols during periods. So useless and pathetic those "grandmother rules" are but only for the sake of stupid orthodox norms we are asked to follow them. Even mostly grandmothers don't know the rational reason behind those restrictions but still they believe that those norms should be followed. Girls and specially old aunts really need to be awaken.
My grandmother sometimes asks me about my period like this: 'When you'll get sick this month?'. It's wierd, at first I didn't understand her, but now I undertand that in the past you just could say you were sick so anyone else would know about your period. Now that is changing. (Sorry for my bad english)
Yes, you are really great! Menstruation is a natural process, but in many Asian countries, people are reluctant to talk about it due to some sort of social restrictions (taboos). In human body, various changes are occurred at different ages; in the case of menstruation, it is a natural issue that is unique to females, on the other hand, males face some changes in their body too, so all these issues are extremely natural. With the school education system, it is so easy to educate these natural issues, so it is the ideal time now to be against these unrealistic taboos in our societies.
then we should also be teaching both boys and girls about boners being natural also (which is also seen as taboo) .it seems society lately focuses solely on female problems and treats boys as outcast no more valuable than the pet in the yard.feed and give him water and hes got a great life
I grew up in the Netherlands, a pretty open country, but I only found out about periods from a book I read. The girl in it said something about 'menstruation' so I looked it up. My parents never told me anything, and school told me 'girls get periods', but nothing more. When I finally did learn more about it in school, I'd already been having my period for over a year.
Coming from the south Asian culture I fully agree with the speaker. The ignorance about menstruation cycle is not a rural problem rather its an urban phenomenon as well. I was 26 when a female friend told me in detail about menstruation. Not just the young girls need to learn about it but also boys should learn so they won't make insensitive period jokes.

This is incredible. She has found a way to break down barriers and educate young girls (and boys!) about periods. So many ted talks are people talking about how things need to change, but she is actually doing something to affect change.
It is not a taboo for Chinese and that's why Athlete FU Yuanhui talked about this in Rio.When i was in China, I talked about this with my close friends and guys friends too. Everybody can understand that it is just physiological phenomenon and why it is shame to talk about. Thank you so much Aditi Gupta and TED. I'm almost going to tear. Because, in my country some families still have that taboo especially the mothers just like you said. When i first said my mom that i'm having a period, she slapped me. it's a traditional way to get the girls ready to their new life. But it's not the right way to do that. And also it seems like girl's life completely change when they start to have periods. Even it has a good intention, it is not perceive like that from the girls. After that I remember that i want to do the same thing to my daughter. When i grew up, İ get rid of that idea of course. But somewhere in the world some girls can't do that. So thanks a lot to you for trying to change this.
Thank you so much for such a valuable and inspirational video. I am a medico doing my MD in community medicine. My research is on adolescent girls , In which mensurational hygiene is one thing on which my research project is based upon. You won't believe, that not even the common ppl but the people from the medicine field also don't feel the need of this basic awareness among the community. My research proposal got rejected at the ethical committee meeting that this is a sensitive issue, this study should not be done. I almost got shocked that even in this era, where the advertisements about the use of sanitary napkins are so openly shared, they think that it is a sensitive issue. Finally I got approval on my research project, and this video came out to be a big inspiration to me.

Alex Larson In an Italian family we are very open about Periods I can talk easily about it with my dad and they even get me stuff I need for it. in Italy when a girl gets her period they throw parties for them its awkward but also really fun because you get presents and everything. i feel really bad for the girls out there who don't get that around the world.
i'm a Bangladeshi Muslim living in u.a.e . I love the way the uae schools explain us about periods starting from grade 5 . and by the way this was an amazing speech
Ishrat Jahan really??I am bangladeshi Muslim girl and live in u.a.e. too...I am in grade 11 and none of my teachers said us anything about periods ever..
There should be a special ministry for that kind of issues..... So every single issues relate to woman could be resolved...... And that kind of girl should be a minister of that department....
awsome and salute you to start such initiative ............ well needed here where periods are considered as tabbo and the girls are considered as impure
riya your wrong am boy but i never feel so girls r not impure the society's eye's r impure don't feel like that as a men a salute to women cos a person who gave me birth was a women mother. a person who teached how to become a good student was a woman. and after later after i get married a woman will guide me to lead my half life so my friend be proud cos ur a women
Best innovative way or method to teach the unaware girls about menstruation, actually in India we are in desperate need to break our conserved social norms which was made by some insane without thinking anything before making it mandatory. Hats of for ur work towards upliftment of girls.
Absolutely! Very period positive mother of two here. Like you said I am being culturally sensitive so played it with high volume so my in laws could hear too!! AND my girls will go to the temple if they want to.
Ure the best . . . I displayed your video in my (girl's) college in a projector and the whole college was delighted and curious and happy and satisfied to watch and learn and spread this thing. And the word ...'menstruation is a welcoming change in a girl's life ' waahhh . . . Thank uh and well done !!!
I remember my dad telling me about periods all scientifically using words like Luteinising Hormone , FSH etc....I didn't really understand all of it😅 but I'm so thankful to him for educating me about it....it's just a process in the body involving a lot of hormones and linings😂!
I am a 12 year old girl...I got my period about 5 months ago...Thankfully, my mom and grandmother were well educated about menstruation thats why even I'm well educated..I came to know what are period when I was in 3rd grade..My mom did not hesitate to tell me what are periods? Why do they occur? What is their significance and all these things. .I wish all the girls get well educated and our next generation will not be ashamed to talk about this topic called 'MENSTRUATION'.
I’m 17 and I promise to encourage other girls and even older women that periods are blessing and are the reason why we have the opportunity to become mothers.
This is very important! I lived with my mom and 3 sisters and this just reminds me of life. thanks for this awesome talk. you are just like my family. Many blessings.
being a girl I m not ashamed during my periods and also never my parents made me feel so .. talking about period should not be taken as taboo agreed that's good initiative but putting restrictions while entering temple is valid during menstruation.
Our school used to take us for treks. I remember being shocked in class 4 when the accompanying teachers told us not to worry if you see blood and told us all about periods. Ironically some girls did get theirs. I have been one of those people to get it in class 8, and I was so excited. But now they suck. I didn't realise I'd have to go through that ordeal every month. Haha. I think I'm one of the lucky ones in this case, because our school had all sorts of seminars about periods (class 6), even about cleaning your genital area(class 8), hell they even told us about contraceptives and safe sex, if we were very eager to try it. (class 9)
I just wanted to motivate myself by watching this vedio because today one of teacher call my sister and said that how can you give a stutus on periods she just post a period cycle meem .And the teacher scold her out and ask is this your personality, you cant potrate such things ,what will your family members and friends think, this is not a thing to advertise and at last she said listen if you don't change your future will be not bright.
Not nearly as severe as the restriction she mentioned, but even in North America (probably in Europe too) there's a restriction: hiding pads and tampons on the way to the washroom, as if it's shameful to have a period.
There really isn't a difference between putting more in one comment and stretching it between three. There is, however, a difference between scrolling past something that annoys you and being rude for no reason. This is a bit ironic, because I stopped commenting a week ago, and replying to something someone says makes them likely to comment again, to reply to you...
Although she makes really good points, I would like to out of context here and tell everyone that buy sanitary napkins is not a taboo in Jharkhand. I'm from Bihar, I've lived in various little towns in Jharkhand, and even my mom used pads, not cloth or rags. I know it's not relevant right now but just wanted to clear the air. I don't mean to belittle her work or anything, but I don't want people to have any more misconceptions than they already have. Hats off to her, though. She's doing really good. An inspiration indeed.
iam very sad that even after 70 yrs of independence ,women of india r not free.... first of all ,the gk of the periods should be made compulsory in the early 3,4 classes , to let the kide know that it is nat taboo and teach them to b open minded!!
aditi you choose a good topic about periods no doubt it is a dare subject to talk and to express this taboo thaks and hats of you for brighter future girs of india
Mensuration is natural process ,I never feel ashamed to talk about this. When I was learning about it in class 8 I got my period. Thank God ,I knew about it. Few days ago ,I was talking about padman movie with my friends especially with my best friend who is boy. My friend is so open- minded about mensuration but there are very few men like him and who never make fun ,men in india who know about period by study also never fail to make fun of women and ladies.
Hi Aditi Gupta, you are amazing! Thank you so much for your hard work. It is so beautiful to see you taking care of the next generation of women. That is what we all should be doing, making the world better for the younger ones coming after us. It would be wonderful to have also available a brazilian portuguese version of the book.
Most Asian cultures its a taboo to talk about menstruation openly. Society need to change their way of thinking. It is actually a natural biological process that every girl who has attained age.
Its ironic that we al know about this but not completely. This video has brought up a new aspect for a lot of people ho are unaware of the ordeal that young girls have to go through in India without realizing that they are going through an ordeal. But i feel this video is made focussing on responsible and sensible adult people (men and women) because its they who can bring change in the society and state of girls in the society.
As a human I was being told not to touch them and not going in inside the room in those 2/3 days... How poor we are those days and still now... We are rich by money and all the luxury things but not by these things...
I am happy that am grown up in an open minded family my family took care me a lot during those days ❤️ even in future I will also teach my young ones to understand the good meaning of periods that it is a part of life which means you are growing up now and becoming a beautiful women
4:53 This reminds me of a talk about menstruation with a coworker....she was kinda shocked that we talked about menstruation like it was normal; i did my best to make her comfortable and not be ashame, it was her first time talking about that subject with a man.
it's important for everyone actually because there are people who are literate, know English and are educated but still treat menstruation as a taboo! So it's the same scenario everywhere!
In a country where talking openly about human beings' private parts is looked down upon and portrayed even in a stupidly funny manner in movies for example: laughing when someone farts, not realising the fact that flatulence is a very acute problem in irritable bowel syndrome and that frequent farts are not something that is comfortable for the stomach. Or when someone (another man or woman) hits another man in his private parts, people laugh not realising that any rough impact to the reproductive organ can cripple that person lifelong, it is not surprising that menstruation and puberty are looked down upon as taboo subjects. Even sanitary napkins advertisements castigate women to be cautious about wearing white pants during 'those days of the month'. To be frank, do I really give a damn about my pant colours if I pee or bleed in it? The first thing that I want to do is get rid of the wet feeling and then think about everything else. The day we start viewing human anatomy (men and women) seriously and stop making nonsensical jokes about it, is the day we will be able to think freely and deeply about these things. Nothing that keeps me from leading a normal and bodily comfortable daily life is funny or taboo. It is my right to be rid free of bodily discomfort in my everyday life.

Why? Luckily, there's another Tedxtalk called "Men need to talk about menstruation" that may help answer that question.
Yes. I am so lucky that my school is good enough to take around 2-3 workshops about periods when I was in grade 5. My teacher even drew a diagram of it.

That's so good to hear I really wish we could do this in India as well😔But I'm trying my best to remove this word (period) from taboo list..
Aditi Mam, the stand you took to spread this awareness, i am amazed by your work. Keep spreading right information.
Because of society watching it in low volume😣
i'm a Bangladeshi Muslim living in u.a.e . I love the way the uae schools explain us about periods starting from grade 5 . and by the way this was an amazing speech
Ishrat Jahan really??I am bangladeshi Muslim girl and live in u.a.e. too...I am in grade 11 and none of my teachers said us anything about periods ever..
Ramisa Rusmia in what type of school do u study???British or indian
Ramisa Rusmia in what type of school do u study???British or indian
Respect girls specially when they are in their periods 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Please give this lecture in Hindi also .so that we aware Indians easily .....but you give fantastic speech ...Good efforts ..
There should be a special ministry for that kind of issues..... So every single issues relate to woman could be resolved......
And that kind of girl should be a minister of that department....
I agree
our society need this
u are great mam
I don't understand why people disliked this video?
Please watch the talk by Sinu Joseph. Then may be you will understand why.
awsome and salute you to start such initiative ............
well needed here where periods are considered as tabbo and the girls are considered as impure
riya your wrong am boy but i never feel so girls r not impure the society's eye's r impure don't feel like that as a men a salute to women cos a person who gave me birth was a women mother. a person who teached how to become a good student was a woman. and after later after i get married a woman will guide me to lead my half life so my friend be proud cos ur a women
Really appreciable work...👍👍 ... and ofcoz one day ua dream will get come true.
I remember my dad telling me about periods all scientifically using words like Luteinising Hormone , FSH etc....I didn't really understand all of it😅 but I'm so thankful to him for educating me about it....it's just a process in the body involving a lot of hormones and linings😂!
great awareness program. keep up the good work.
It's a topic that should be in limelight
I'm very happy after watching this.but still educated people's are following this taboo.
Brave Gal..... Time to change the perception, this whole narrative needs more attention
Aditi and Tuhin, I’m so proud of what you’ve created! Great job and keep it going!!,
appreciable....u spoke with a right sensibility as is the issue. Right education is really important.
This is how change can be brought in India. this where India can se his future..!!!!
Change maker this woman is and working on a great cause!!
Not my mumma comparing whos periods came earlier
Mines or my cousins 🙂
great job hats off to you 🇮🇳 jai hind..
very good idea that aware the girls about their physical change like ms...hats of to u and ur organisation..keep it up
IAm5130 Both are carrect.
being a girl I m not ashamed during my periods and also never my parents made me feel so .. talking about period should not be taken as taboo agreed that's good initiative but putting restrictions while entering temple is valid during menstruation.
Not valid, sweeetie. It shows that Periods are still a taboo, and you are contributing.
(class 9)
I think men & women, both need to know about period moreover we should not feel shy to talk about it.
I think not only girls...our boys should also be educated about menstruation...
it's not that parents or other adults don't wanna talk about sex or menstruation they just don't know how to
I just wanted to motivate myself by watching this vedio because today one of teacher call my sister and said that how can you give a stutus on periods she just post a period cycle meem .And the teacher scold her out and ask is this your personality, you cant potrate such things ,what will your family members and friends think, this is not a thing to advertise and at last she said listen if you don't change your future will be not bright.
How can she be a teacher I think she is "unpad gawar" log he aese hote hai
It's a very great initiative Aditi Mam,hope to find days coming ahead where speaking of periods is considered a sin.
"...is considered a sin," you trippin?
Who were the 342 people disliking this video?
Maybe those conservative mindset people.😒
Aditi thanks for wonderful presentation so easily deserve salutes
5 years of this video but nothing changes😥 That's our society
Nice speech...but what was the use of education if girls are abshment of periods..so girls need to become like aditi madam
Not nearly as severe as the restriction she mentioned, but even in North America (probably in Europe too) there's a restriction: hiding pads and tampons on the way to the washroom, as if it's shameful to have a period.
some person okay we get it now stop commenting
+Harsha Sahay
Aditi clearly said (most) not all girls. She offered a percentage showing 88% of girls.
+Abdulaziz Al-Wandawi No, I meant the part where she mentions that she's from Garhwa, Jharkhand.
Harsha Sahay What she says apply to my country, Iraq. Now, changing winds are blowing.
+Abdulaziz Al-Wandawi That's good. I hope these winds keep on blowing everywhere. (:
iam very sad that even after 70 yrs of independence ,women of india r not free.... first of all ,the gk of the periods should be made compulsory in the early 3,4 classes , to let the kide know that it is nat taboo and teach them to b open minded!!
Nice and focused on what need to be uncursed from society
Good initiative for menstrual awareness.
I watched this video shared in 100 groups in and download for social awareness.
Thanx
Keep it up👌👌
aditi you choose a good topic about periods no doubt it is a dare subject to talk and to express this taboo
thaks and hats of you for brighter future girs of india
It's admirable...captions in many languages...
Powerful. So great to see how one can change somebody's world💜💜💜💜💜💜
a wonderful step, I think that it's really important.
THANK YOU FOR THIS AMAZING WORK.
Most Asian cultures its a taboo to talk about menstruation openly. Society need to change their way of thinking. It is actually a natural biological process that every girl who has attained age.
Excelente proyecto!!! Saludos desde México!!! 😊
really loved you talk!! India needs more people like you.
Wow, she did bring up the the change.
4:53 This reminds me of a talk about menstruation with a coworker....she was kinda shocked that we talked about menstruation like it was normal; i did my best to make her comfortable and not be ashame, it was her first time talking about that subject with a man.
You are superb on your topic of menustral cycle
A Great Initiative - Aditi ,U should be the Face of Clean India !
proud of u for this work
If you mean it to aware those who don't know about Periods, then you must talk in Hindi, caz those who understand your English, know all about Periods.
it's important for everyone actually because there are people who are literate, know English and are educated but still treat menstruation as a taboo! So it's the same scenario everywhere!
john keats why cant you come out n tell why should she tell change your mind country will change am ready to speak about it now
awsome speech u r very intelligent
Way to go girl👍 it's worth if it even makes a smaller change.
Everyone do not have partner like you😢😢😢😢
