Safe to say Mitchell hooper conquered the strongman world in 2023, he has won the 2 biggest comps in the same year. Hyped to see what he gets up to in the future
Goes to prove that being solid in all events is key. Mateusz won THREE of 5 events, Mitchell won ZERO of them, but finishing strong in all 5 means he takes home the gold. Well done!
Mateusz' deadlift sets him back so much. Same thing kinda happened in 2020, he came in first in 4 events, set 2 or 3 WRs in the process, and still came in second.
What impressed me most about Mitch was clearly even when coming second in several events, like the elephant bar press, he clearly could have done more, same with some other events where it was clear he was not nearly pushing himself as hard as the other competitors... I wonder if that helped him keep so consistent across the entire event. But it is also clear he isnt even close to setting his best pr yet... a few improvements in select events and he will be near impossible to stop baring no injuring.. Wish him the best coming up, as a fellow Canadian he is really doing us proud. It's funny because i was not following world's strongest man for over a year, and had just watched some Eddie and Brian movies, so I wondered who was the next Canadian to take up representing our nation, and only to find out Hooper is not only representing us proud, he is owning this year... bravo to him....
Man, mateusz is so hard on himself, to come back and perform at that level after 2 years injured is insane! Can’t wait to see him back in action in the future, always been a favourite to watch
The iron bull at last years rogue invitational, I thought his time looked slow at first, then realizing he was the only one to finish it, look back and realize he’s actually frighteningly powerful
We're so, so lucky to have Big Loz doing all that he is for the promotion, development and consequently the future of Strongman. Finally starting to be viewed as a legitimate sporting draw and not just a sideshow anymore.
I guess he's trying to make a statement, but perhaps what he doesn't realize is that our society has been over-saturated with this message by every government, corporation and school pushing the ESG agenda relentlessly. Identity politics is ridiculous. No one cares about anyone else's sexuality. Don't ask, don't tell.
It's great to strongman coverage in such capable hands with Rogue! WSM needs to take notes! This is what the fans want! We don't want to see an event months later after we know who won
What I also like about Arnold over WMS is: 1) no hot exotic location where 400 lb guys suffer under the blazing sun -- at Arnold and Shaw the real fans get to watch as well; 2) good static events, not speed events that are tests of speed more than strength; 3) seeing most of the lifts -- though sadly not all -- but WSM has in the past skipped over the entire log lift!; 4) no delay in showing it; 5) no frills or extra stuff -- just the lifts.
Yes, not a good event. I hope they discontinue it. In the early WSM they had all sorts of wacky events; good to stick with the true and tried. but kudos to them for trying to invent a new one.
Mateusz is one my favorites. Hope he does well after the surgeries. Barring injuries - Mitchell Cooper will be better every year and possibly win 3 straight.
Wow, what an athlete Mitch Hooper is. And Trey Mitchell has made a lot of progress over the last few years. Really feel for Mateusz and all of his injuries. You know he’s probably mentally, as well as physically suffering. Really hope he gets back to peak condition.
I believe I heard this in the past. The "wheels" or "drums" on the wheel of pain has sand in it which makes keeping any momentum almost impossible as it is always pushing back against you as the sand falls back with the turning if the drum.
I wonder what kind of strategy that condition would dictate as best... I wonder if, say, rocking the beams for each few-foot gain would eliminate some of the effort expenditure (I'm just musing and this technique probably wouldn't be allowed).
34:15 -- Watch the 1981 WSM... Bill Kazmaier did this with 180lbs kegs loaded with led shot and water. He was called "the human forklift" as he launched the kegs into the back of the truck from over 5ft away "throwing them like beach balls" He would've loved the stone toss.
The last event is good for "grip and back" stamina too. You try marching up a steep ramp with heavy suit cases in your hands.. it's taxing in the extreme. The first guy to complete the ramp was Zydrunas Savickas. The first year Arnold Strongman was held seriously, Big Z was the only guy to get up the ramp. It's that brutal of an endurance and grip test.
Amazing to see Mateusz Kieliszkowski back in action after 2 years of recovery, and to podium at second. Mateusz has definitely shown the other athletes he's back in the game.
Shame for mateusz! Best endurance for a strongman but sadly his weak point is size and raw strength for the conventional lifts. Great competition overall
who else called the @1 strongman (* Hooper) from merely seeing the pictures at the beginning? so proud... i may be a gigantic loser, but i'll be damned if i can't spot the strongest human being in the room.
In the Steinstossen, I'm surprised that none of them tried to throw it with their triceps more...like a behind-the-head barbell plate extension? I know 185 pounds is a lot, but I feel like they could move the weight a bit morwnthan they were. Some were almost just running and letting go 🤷♂️
it would be nice if pounds is converted into kg's everytime it is mentioned or displayed. Half of the world (the smart half if you ask me) doesn't use that metric system.
Same story with Mateusz. Great in everything but the deadlift, and that really hurts him. He's the best athlete in these competitions, but it's unfortunately not enough. I'm really rooting for the guy.
He reminds me of other sports figures That come into to the sport, and their fitness level is already double everybody else’s. Remember when Tiger Woods went pro? Everyone else is fat and out of shape. Gretzky? Same. This level of fitness and skill is already up everybody else’s; he’s just filling in the power strokes.
The different sporting events (strongman, powerlifting, grappling, etc) were good but the expo is getting progressively worse. It's getting to a point where I am debating on going due to the cost/benefit ratio.
