The Sound Of A Popping Or Clicking CV Axle When Turning While Accelerating And What Causes It

  • In this video I have a great example of what a clicking or popping CV axle sounds like when making turns while accelerating. I even dissect the axle so that you can see what exactly failed on the inside giving you a better understanding of why a faulty CV axle can sound this way.
As mentioned in the video, this noise is usually made by the outer joint of the CV axle while making turns while accelerating. This noise is usually experienced on front wheel drive vehicles equipped with CV axles. A typical front wheel drive vehicle will come equipped with two CV axles, one on the left side and one on the right side and this noise can come from either of the two or both. CV axles are also know as "halfshafts". Each axle will have an inner joint and an outer joint. The outer joint is what we will go over in this video. The inner joint can also cause noise and other symptoms. But, it usually will not sound the way an outer CV joint sounds. Click on the links below for more information concerning inner joint wear and CV axle replacement.
So after getting some comments on the quality of the audio in this video, regarding the noise, I've made a new video that just features the noise. The audio is better quality. Here is that link:

Note: I make no guarantee that by using this video you will make a correct diagnosis of what may be wrong with your vehicle. This video is only an informational video of a "typical" cv axle failure and cannot take the place of properly diagnosing your vehicle.

Same problem hit me when I started my trip from uk to lithuania (2000km/1200mi) with my car. You cannot imagine the noise I was supposed to listen while driving 90/130kmh for 22 hours. The solution that I found most helpful by far was turning the music volume to max.

Thank you for verifying! I had replaced the front shocks and still heard the noise. I was thinking probably axle. And yep, because I hear the sound when I’m turning mainly at low velocities like going into a driveway or when I’m turning the wheels to park in reverse.

This really helped me understand what that noise is in my 2018 Ford Edge. Still under powertrain warrantee, I brought it into Ford dealership and they said my CV Boot is leaking, and they will replace it in 2 weeks after parts come in. They said that it is such a small leak, it will be ok for me to drive it to Key West Sunday, 500 miles each way. But I have been hearing this sound for a year or so. And how does he know how long it has been leaking? He didn't mention anything about the bearings, he said I just need my Boot replaced, but I do have that sound in my right drivers wheel when I turn. What do you or anyone else think? I believe it has been leaking for over a year. It has about 55,000 miles on it. Is it safe to drive? Update. I just went out and crawled under ant looked at the boots and axle. They all look clean and new and there is no grease splattered or leaking anywhere. The axle is not loose. The only thing is that when I make a sharp right turn, I hear 2 or 3 little pops

Great video with details! My Subaru Forester was making similar noises when turning at slow speeds. My mechanic said the axle needs to be replaced. My car was lifted 2" so I'm wondering if that could have caused the damage like this too?

I re-did my outer boots and added OEM Honda grease and after a few weeks click started, before it wasn’t there only torn boots, my guess is too much grease leaked out and joint got worn or I didn’t put enough grease but I used all that came with kit 😳

I always replace cv axles if the boots are busted, clicking or not. It was probably messed up before you put the boot on. Sometimes you can get lucky putting a boot on.

I drove it home and now when the van has been parked for a while, when I first try to back out or drive off it makes a single popping noise, like a knuckles dislodging. After it makes the noise it does not make it again while driving.. i drove 300 miles stopping at countless intersections and it never made the noise until the following morning backing out of a parking space. Anybody got any ideas?

This just happened to me (5-24-21) on my way to a doctor's appt ..I was driving, then stopped at red light. When the light changed, I accelerated, my car jerked, there was a loud knocking , grinding sound and my car only went 5 mph then stopped completely. I thought it was the transmission going out, so I was very upset. I had the car towed to my mechanic thinking I was going to have to get a new transmission on my old 2002 Toyota Camry which has 152,000 miles on it. My mechanic asked me to describe what happened and what it sounded like. He then looked under the car and said it wasn't the transmission; it was the CV joint. I was relieved. I was able tp pick up my repaired car the next day. However, my cv joint was so badly damaged, he said it was the hardest time he ever had with a car trying to get the old cv joint off, so the labor was a bit more than usual, also, I needed Freon , so my whole cost, parts and labor, was $547.00

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  2 роки тому +1

No, the boot was not cracked or leaking. Typically a joint will go bad because of lack of lubrication or from moisture and dirt getting in. Sometimes, like in the case with this axle in the video, they can go bad without any outward signs.

I have an issue with 2007 tsx where when I'm braking and turning at low speeds I will get a clicking noise. Going through drive thrus is the worst with braking and accelerating multiple times plus going around the corners at slow speeds. Noise coming to a stop and letting off the brakes.
This seems to be a problem from the front right wheel. Also when the front right wheel hits a good bump at speeds it feels like it rattles a bit, sometimes the car will shake for a sec depending on the bump. But if I ever hit bumps on the left side of the car its still solid and doesnt really make much noise.
Could those issues be caused by this CV axle?
Edit: Also want to add that very rarely the steering wheel will become very shakey on some roads. Not sure what causes it as it's happened multiple times on the same road but never really any where else and this one road doesnt even appear to be worse than much of the other roads i drive on

Not sure what the cause of your symptoms are. Probably best to take it to a tech and have them diagnose it for you.
