The fan runs off of the same 5V that the rumble does. So it suffers when rumble is activated. It does this on a GameCube too. Doesn't make a difference to use 4 at once or only 1. It at max still only uses the same amount of draw as the normal controller does with rumble. That's all have a good one
I've only ever used one of these controllers in my lifetime (the original Duke Xbox version) and I'll never forget it. Still the most amazing controller I've ever used. The Duke was Incredible, the airflow brought it to the next level.

Oh man, I have this! When I was a kid we got it at a Ross (of all places) in a discount bin for like 10 bucks. We LOVED it. We used it for years and still do, I have a vivid memory of playing Melee with this back when Melee was the newest Smash game. Mine is still in surprisingly good condition, the rubber joystick still feels great.
I had a Nyko Airflo wireless for PS2, probably my most favorite controller. I too have large sweaty man hands and the larger grips combined with the cooling was a perfect combination. I wish they still made these.
Torchlight is back! haven't played that game like for years now, but I still remember all the fond memories I had playing that game co-op with my friends. 100% Recommended!

I had a black NYKO Gamecube controller and I always used it back in the day. It wasn't this Air Flow one, but a similar build. When friends would come over, I'd give them my regular Nintendo-branded purple controller and they would be like, "...You don't wanna use that one?" Idk what it was about it, but it was just such a solid little controller.

The grips on this thing look great, also the fan mechanism probably adds some heft to it, not that it needs much more since it has the rumble motor inside anyway.

I had an Xbox 360 controller made buy Power A also called AirFlo and was licensed by Microsoft. That controller was really good as it lit up, had a fan and the dpad was so good, but was bad quality as it broke in two years
Torchlight 2 is great, back when I had an amazing personal home computer I would play it with my sister online. Now I mostly play on my switch when I get downtime between class and work, having a version I could play mobile would be a fun trip down memory lane.

I have a Chillstream PS3 Logitech controller, which is basically the same thing, but it had an analog d-pad that you can use by switching the left stick and the d-pad input with a button... just by that, it makes that controller way more interesting than this one
I had one for PS2 it was a great controller i bought it mainly for racing games cause unlike other games racing tends to last pretty long and if you do endurance races you'll need this controller.
I'm thinking your second guess was the right one, that there's just not enough power to run fan and rumble at the and time, and it just looks like it was designed to turn off while rumbling. If it was done intentionally to avoid power loss, they'd just be making it do what it would do anyway if left alone.
