    I've seen this process described in old farming books for speeding the sprouting of wheat and barley. They piled it and raked it to monitor the moisture level.
    You do have to plant AS SOON AS you start seeing a nub of sprout or you can lose the whole batch of seed.
    It works well in the really dry parts of the USA, decreasing the amount of time you need to water many times a day.

  • @rickcross7888
    @rickcross7888 10 місяців тому +2

    I've been doing this for years. Never heard of Moon dust??? I Just dampen the seed mix it in with black dirt and Sand.., put it into a pile and cover it for a couple days minimum.. size depends on how big of an area I do..... I have used Up to 150 pounds of seeds in 2 yards of dirt for 1/2 acre lawns. I prep the area with sand and black dirt mixed well. Fertilize with milarginite... Then I use a good heavy duty broadcast spreader with a metal agitator to spin out the pre germinated mixture.... Spread it heavily as possible rake it in water it down and in three days it's popping up and looking green. But it's really not necessary to go through all that extra work unless you are trying to impress someone??? Because it only takes 7 days for the same thing to happen by just planting the fresh dry seeds in properly prepared ground.... When using fresh dry seed the number one tip I can give you for a beautiful long lasting low maintenance yard is by planting it with a blue bird slit seeder in a criss cross pattern. Use milarginite and keep the soil damp until you see green.....
    Planting grass is much more satisfying than laying sod and it's the best lawn you will ever have...

    I you can mix wet seed with an organic or biological fertilizer like Milorganite. Mix it right together and the seeds sticks to the Milorganite and it will spread in a spreader.

  • @robertbishop5564
    @robertbishop5564 2 роки тому +5

    Thanks for the video. Does it take longer for the seed to germinate without the "moon dust" or did you just add that to make the grass stronger and it will still germinate in the same timescale without it?

    • @rickcross7888
      @rickcross7888 10 місяців тому

      No you don't need moon dust if you have a properly prepared surface. Black dirt mixed with sand and milarginite only for fertilizer. If you pre germinate the seed it is green within three days. No need to cover it up with plastic unless it's going to rain hard but most people check the weather forecast before hand? But the pre germinated seeds can be more difficult to spread so you are better off if you are doing a larger area to properly prepare your ground and use fresh dry seed and a broadcast spreader or slit seeder... Keep the soil moist and it will give you the same results in seven days......

    to much water at the start, probably should have soaked in the water for 2-3 days, then applied topsoil to it, leave it for another 2-3 days and then apply it to the lawn. I wonder if shade clothe can be used to cover the lawn instead of the plastic? still apply the blue tarp initially for warmth but then take the tarp off when green shoots appear but leave the shade clothe on to help protect the new lawn but also allow moisture through? I have a small strip of lawn to do (15m x 2.5m) so I'll try it, cheers mate

    I live in Canada and wanted to know if I can start to overseed and fertilize my lawn now as my lawn is dormant in a few spots from the summer? My temperatures right now is around 25C during the day and 17C during the night? Also if the temperatures reach slightly higher than 25 in the day would they be a problem or would I just have to water a lot more during those more warmer days? I was planning on dethaching those dormant areas putting down some seeds and then Peet moss on top. With some Scott’s winter care lawn fertilizer either before or after the seeds. well the front wheels would dig in no doubt and when you came to turn the roller would just kick up what youve just compacted and soil would get in the diff and damage the mower, plus i love the graft and the leg work out, you cant get the same compaction with a roller as it spreads the weight , there is more force being exerted in a heel in a smaller area than a heavy roller over a bigger one

    Hi Daniel. I tried this out and it was a massive fail for me. Thankfully I only tried a cup full of seed. So not a big waste. I followed your instructions apart from the "magic" powder stuff. I was hoping it would work without. But so far... Zilch. This was about 8 days ago. So was expecting something to come through by now.

      @@DanielHibbertLawnExpert I put the seed on a tray indoors. Lightly covered top and bottom with soil . Used the cold water from the previously boiled to water I soaked the seed in and have kept them moist with a gentle spray at least twice a day.
      I've obviously cocked up somewhere along the way. But I thought keeping it indoors in moist soil would of had exactly the same effect as it being outdoors in warm weather? Oh well. Back to the drawing board. Thanks for the prompt reply 👍

    It took several days to prepare it if you had just laid the seed down on the area you wanted grass to grow from the first day you soaked the seed in water, it would be coming through at around the same time naturally finished much quicker and cost less, it seemed a bit pointless to be honest.

      It was a CHALLENGE to see how fast he could sprout the lawn.
      Also, it shortens the time the seed is lying unsprouted and vulnerable to wind, birds and other damage.

    Another expert says the complete opposite. He says you have to rinse it every 12 hours and don’t pour the water you got rid of on the grass as it turns the grass yellow as it’s toxic. And you want to spray it back on your seeds?
