Worked at a sod farm when young. They used to swear by refrigeration of the seed (at least 3 days) - early generations TTTF and Bluegrass. We also soaked, but only for about 24 maximum and with a liquid fish emulsion. We then drained it well, like a day and mixed 50/50 with very dry mason’s sand as a carrier. We usually got germination in four days AND way better stand through maturity - way quicker field rotation. The elderly owner had been doing that for years and said the refrigerator brought up the humidity

Can you explain the refrigeration process? Was this before or after the pregermination soak?

    • @Manoffire260
      @Manoffire260 2 роки тому +42

@@makuakane7787 - days prior, they even had a commercial cooler. The owner claimed the seed coat would soften with the refrigeration and the endosperm was “awakened” going from the cold to the warm - just as if it had overwintered.
The cycle was: several days in the cooler. 24 hours in the fish emulsion. 24 hours draining/drying (slightly). Then mixed with fine, dry sand for application. We broadcast spread, then used his own invention of a spiked roller with no additional weights for lightly inserting into the soil.

While I believe you/him that refrigeration may help the process, it definitely was not due to humidity. The inside of a fridge is a naturally dry environment. Think of it like a big A/C. Both pull moisture from the air, plus the colder parts of the fridge collect the moisture more easily as they attract the moisture better, leaving the food and, in this case, seeds, drier.

just did this with some of my Barenbrug RPR. 5 days of soaking and then mixed it with Milo to dry it out. Put some in the yard on bare spots and put some in trays for growing plugs. Did not seem to do anything. Just now starting to sprout about 13 days out. Normally 7 or so without soaking. Until this moring I thought I might have drowned it. LOL Round 2 I did a pound of KBG Midnight and mixed it with bagged topsoil. Just started that yesterday. Got another pound of RPR that I am just going to keep wet for a few days and then mix with topsoil. Just testing things out before I areate and reseed in the middle of Sept. Love your videos.

I came accross this pregermination technique early summer. The Milorganite site outlines the process. What I found was the 'soak' times given were Woefully short. They state 5 days for KBG. After 2trial sessions I ended up soaking the KBG 12 days. It sprouted 2 days after placement. Full seed germination within 5. This was in mid summer heat in the northeast. Tall fescue was recommended at 3 to 4 days. I ended up soaking for 8 days. Again the seed popped in 2 with full seed germination 3 to 4 days after that. Overall great results for mid summer.
I have 1 more round of seeding starting tomorrow. I have almost 25 pounds thats been soaking for 8 days... its a spreading tall fescue. With cooler temps I'm hoping for great results

@shanghongdong5917 Good question. I've pregerminate numerous times. That's the longest soaking and at that point I just put it down. I never saw the seed crack that they talk about, but at 12 days I didn't want to wait any longer. I could blame bad eye sight but.... just keep an eye on it and go a minimum 5 to 7 days.... if it doesn't crack .. go longer

I pre-germinated kbg earlier this year in a wheelbarrow. Filled it up with seed, water, peat moss, and topsoil. Mixed it up good, put a tarp over the top, and left it for a week. Spread it out over the lawn where needed, and It came in great. It was so nice cutting a big portion of that early establishment period out!
I know that wheelbarrow approach couldn't be done for a full lawn, but for some overseeding I needed in dead patches, it worked great.

Stack each wet/water/bucket on to the top of each other, and weight the top bucket - this is working in parallel. Toxic water thing, yes, abide by that; this effort is worthwhile for warm-season grass; also, not sure it should be submerged for the whole time; 12-hour rule, yes! ... is it too complicated - versus watering the seed on the prepared soil surface .... I have to agree, that is the question; in Arizona, the answer is clear; but here in the SE, water is not a problem; spreading it, yep, that is complicated; the humic acid granule mixer is a good idea; the seed should not sprout, else you break the first-root off of it(!) ... so many issues, yes.

Bro, excellent content haha. If nothing else, it's fun to watch and see what happens in your lawn. I'm in NC and it's really hard to plant KBG for me, but if I could I would def try this out to make it faster! Love my Lawn Rebel shirt as well! Need to get on here and watch you more often than I do. Good luck this season sir!

Another guy said you're supposed to soak the seed, then drain it (in other words, not let it soak for hours and hours). Would you agree with that or do you still feel soaking it for 10+ days and changing out the water every 12 hours is the right way to go?

Was the paint strainer even necessary or could you just do it in a large bin and open up a drain to with a screen overing the outlet of the drain to let the water out?
I was just trying to think of a better way for a larger volume of grass seed with a large bin. Maybe just toss the 50 lb bag into the bin and flood the bin. Repeat each time. Or multiple paint strainer bags into 1 bin.
It seems like I just need something to let the water out, keep the seed below waterline, and not remain too damp and air out between cycles.
Then mix seed with compost and spread with compost spreader. Broadcast or dropseeder if possible.

Next try doing some magnetic seed exposure. You can use a 2x2x2 or larger N50 magnet and expose the seeds on the edge of the South pole. Do not use on the side of the magnet and unless you want your seed to go bad do not expose it to the North of the magnet or you will get lower germination rates and unhealthy plants. You need to expose the seed for a few hours. You can try with alfalfa seeds first and you will see and taste the difference.

Pretty sure I've seen individuals use a peat moss roller as well... mix the seed with the pest moss, and it'll give it some material to attract to when germinating too

Seeded...2 days after - heavy, heavy rain. It's a flat area, wash away? If so, to where?
After seeing what you do, I'm thinking all that rain water would help.
    Keep up the good work!

I pre-germinated for a small fix last year and felt I could skip changing the water. Came back only 3-4 days later and it smelled like the foulest sewage ever. Some of the seed worked, some didn’t. Thankfully it was only 5 lbs of seed.

You can pretreat any seed, normally it’s with a seaweed treatment or a something similar but it becomes a nightmare to sow. I’ve mixed it with soil, ended up with a sloppy mess. Looks good now though, hoping for a quick tour of how it looking now
