It's very simple to power an Intex Excursion don't let it get too complicated. Too much available information can be overwhelming so I made this vid to help guide a buyer along.
You'll need a deep cycle marine batter first, I recommend a lead acid battery inside a battery box. The size battery you need depends how long you'll run the motor and how powerful the motor is. The 40lb thrust motor uses about 43 amps and top speed so we use a 105 amp hour marine battery- this is a big battery for this motor.
If you have a bigger motor though you'll need a big battery so i gave over the different size options AND i give the average specification from Duracell, Die Hard and Interstate marine batteries. The decisions become very easy after watching this.
Charging is also easy. We no longer use a quick charger but a "plug and play" charger instead. Just connect the cable, plug in the charger and it does the rest. it's very easy.
Intex Escursion is a great raft so make sure you get the most out of it!
Great video man, much appreciated as always!
Gregory Grimes thank you Gregory! I have more coming
Love your videos. I just received my Ex5 and will do floor mod soon.
Thank you- join the Facebook group and share photos when you’re done if you’d like…
New subscriber here - glad the algorithm introduced me to you. Bought a Challenger 3 a couple months back and paddled it out on a 5 mile long lagoon about 3-4 times before I learned that I could have just slapped a trolling motor on it. These vids helped me get a great set up going now: using a 55# thrust motor (max thrust without jumping up to 24v) which pushes about 650lbs (3 people + cargo) and I wondered why I ever bothered paddling it for the whole day. Powering it with a 12v 100ah AMG Battery (instead of two 50ah in parallel) and its a little over-powered but to be fair we get strong winds where and when I take it out so just wanted to be safe. Plus the battery I'm using lasts forever since I don't need to have need it on max speed the whole day although it is comically fast to go full speed! Thanks for all the tips and tricks cause it sure has helped!
That’s great to hear! I’ve had to paddle my Excursion before and it’s not fun at all. If you’d like, please, join the FB group (link in description) and post some pics. Thank you for subscribing!
Great video Thanks
Hi, please explain how to hook up solar power to charge battery and there's a way to keep it charging while in motion
Thanks for the video. Do you think I can get a 24 group battery for an excursion 5? Let’s say I only plan out to go for a 2 hour trip around the lake...
Great thanks! Please could you tell me about the charger ? I have one for the car batteries does it do the job?many thanks!
Just like the others, thank you for your great videos, I have been spending hours trying to figure out what to buy. I have an Intex Excursion 4 raft and a Minn Kota Endura C2 30lb, 30 in Transom-Mount Trolling Motor. Can you recommend battery and battery box set up? Thank you!
Kelly McDowell hi Kelly, a 30lb thrust doesn’t take much power... of course, it depends how long you’re running the motor but a group 27 lead acid around 85amp/hour should work fine. That battery box in the video description is what I’d recommend. I spent way too much building my own battery box!
Did your end up buying everything you need? I'd like to see how others set up their Excursion. If interested you can follow us on Facebook and upload a pic. Just search "motorfloating" on Facebook
Do you
need a battery box ? Or can i make a box drill holes like you did ? Or do you need a box inside a
box ?
Hello Chris, I would get a battery box just to give it stability. A basic box is around $15. If you’re using a lead acid battery and it tips over that acid could eat holes into the raft
Hi! do you know if it’s sufficient to spend the whole day on a lake (if we don’t move a lot and when we do we use the paddles as much as possible) with only one 24DC AGM 35Ah?
It’s hard to say… I spend all day on the lake and prefer at least 100 amp hour. Speed 3 on a 40 lb thrust Minn Kota draws something like 30 amps…
Can you recommend me a good batterie to use for my trolling motor I have a 30 lb thrust mankota trolling motor just don’t want to buy a crappy one would rather buy a nice one that will last long on the water
For a lead acid battery I would go with something like a Duracell 100 amp/hr matinee battery, maybe something smaller for a 30-lb thrust. If you use it a lot a lithium is well with the price
Well the type of my charger is CTEK mxs 3.8
71 years old...I would like Lithium for the lower weight. Possible? Recommendations?
I have a Battle Born lithium and it’s great. 100 amp hr
Hey brother! I took your advice from before. I plan on taking the boat out tmara mornin but I got an Urgent question, can the circuit breaker from my motor sit inside the battery box on top of the battery using a small piece of cardboard as a barrier thats taped down with electrical tape? Is this safe?
tim lynch I just got double sided tape and stuck the fuse on the underside of the lid...
Hi Tim, if line to see how others are setting up Excursion. If interested follow is on Facebook and upload a pic. Just search "motorfloating"
Did catch the motor model, was it the 30, 45,55 lb thrust? I just ordered the 30 for mine off Bass Pro Shop for $99 on sale.
The one clamped to the table is a 40lb thrust... For the Excursion 5 that's there minimum power I would recommend. Please, subscribe for more info. My other vids have some good info on setting these up.
appreciate the insight, I've enjoyed your content on the excursion 5, it helped me make the decision to purchase one. So far it's been a great buy. Rowing have been fun but the motor should help. I also have a anchor coming as well.
Have you taken out out with the motor? If you have is liner to see the set up. If interested, please follow us on Facebook to upload a pic. Just search "motorfloating"
I have a 24lbs thrust on mine with two lawnmower battery’s do I have a improper set up?
Not at all
@@ThePNW I was thinking about selling my 24 lb thrust and replacing it with a 55 would a I go a couple mph faster or stay the same it’s the intex exursion 5 it would be on
i just got a 40lb thrust min kota for my intex 4 exursion. Can i use a yellow top optima battery to power it? Great vids by the way!
Yes... As long as it's a marine battery you should be fine. Please, subscribe for more!
can i ask what speed you were able to achieve on the excursion 4 with 40lb thrust?
@@royflores850 I am running a yellow top optima battery and a group 34 battery next to it when the other one is drained I switch over. I must say this 40 pound thrust kicks ass on the water. I have 3 people in the raft plus a tote with 2 batteries in the middle an a wood floor! Prob about 10-12 mph
Pnw, did u need a cable extension to get it to sit in the middle? What gauge cable did u buy and can you pls link something similar to what you bought if u did. Just picked up a trolling motor and gonna place it in the middle of the boat too
Jonathan Yang can you email this request to thepnwor@gmail.com ? I’ll give the details there
Hello Jonathan... did you get your Excursion set up?
I did. But its been a slow build. I hv everything but battery, the battery case, and the power cord extention. Too broke right now to buy em. Will probably get a battery soon.
Jonathan Yang I understand, Dave for next summer. Three plastic battery box is $15 or so. You can extend the wires on your own for a lot less money. If you want to stay up to date we have a FB page. Just search @ motorfloating
@@ThePNW nice!!!! Thanks for everything
shaft length does it matter?
On Minn Kotas motors, anything over 30' lb thrust will be on a 36" shaft which is the perfect length for In Excursions
Hi, do you know if the intex excursion 5 needs both a deep cycle marine battery AND a starting battery if I'm out on a lake all day and i'll only turn the motor on occasionally to move around? 🙂
Preferably you want a deep cycle but I’ve seen people use a short cycle with no problems….
@@ThePNW Because apparently, some articles say that using deep cycle to start the motor is not good. So they suggest having both on board (deep cycle + starter). But from your experience, having only a deep cycle for starting and running is sufficient in the long run?
@@sergiosturino it sounds like they’re referring to starting a gas engine. You just need a deep cycle battery (or better, lithium) to run an electric trolling motor.
@@ThePNW Thank you for the help!
Could I use this in the ocean in a really calm area I live at
If I had a trolling motor meant for salt water I'd do it... i would definitely use a powerful motor though!
@@ThePNW ah sweet I didn’t even realize there was such a thing as a marine trolling motor
Hi I bought the motor directly from intex its also a 40 lbs thrust. What do you recommend for battery can you send link on Amazon or ebay for best battery for that?? 105 amp I guess you mentioned is the biggest??. Thx
DjFresz07 if you plan on spending all day on the water I would get a 105 amp/hour just so you won’t have to worry about depleting the battery. I’ve ran my battery out a few times and rowing the Excursion isn’t fun
Might as well get 2 of them keep on in the car for back up?? Thank you for great videos and help. Really appreciated it. Just purchased mine today!
DjFresz07 I actually do have two! Thank you
Is the Group 31 battery will fit in Newport Vessels battery box?
Hi Wyatt, I use a battery box I made myself (it ended up costing more than that battery box!)
The PNW How much is your battery box? Can you make one and I will pay for it.
wyatt you may be able to find out for $15 Deka 03189 Marine Battery Box (Large, Group 27/31), 1 Pack www.amazon.com/dp/B002OBT0PO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ApYoFb6E37VTB
The PNW..Awesome! one more thing Since the battery box has a built-in circuit breaker, Do i still need to install the circuit breaker that comes with the trolling motor?
Thanks. R u running a 31 on ur set up? Looking to get a 40lbs thrust too. Also did you say in ur other video that u recommend a 36" shaft on ur trolling motor? What was the reason for that?
Jonathan Yang we carry two group 31 batteries if we’re going on a long trip. Yes- 36” shaft so it’s tall enough to reach back and hold the till while being deep enough to keep the prop submerged in choppy water. Plus, minn Kota c2s come standard with 36” shaft on 40 lb thrusts... do you have an Excursion?
@@ThePNW yes I do have one. Exact same boat as yours. Trying to find a trolling motor now but they are sold out everywhere. If it is in stock they r over $200 which is way over my budget.
Appreciate the video and information. I ordered the Excursion 5 and the Minn Kota 45 today. I had no idea on what battery to buy. Thanks for the information. I have subscribed. I'm a new UA-camr also, if you wanted to follow back.
hi i have Newport Vessels NV-Series 55lb Thrust trolling motor, do you know where i can get good long running battery and what kind? thanks a lot sir
Hello, I may use a flooded lead acid battery with a 105 amp/hour rating. With a 55 lb thrust you’d probably want that larger capacity
@@ThePNW thanks you sir, they probably have that at the autozone?
III Great Lights yea, make sure you get a marine battery. If you have a Batteries Plus store near you I would just go there
@@ThePNW would you mine send me a link from amazon if any, just want to make sure im buying the right one, and its coming from the expert.
III Great Lights I haven’t seen any flooded lead acid batteries on amazon (it’s probably hard to ship them). Here’s a link to batteries plus: www.batteriesplus.com/productdetails/battery/marine-and-boat/deep-cycle/bci-group-31m/sli31mdc
Hey man! I'm really glad I found your videos! I actually got a a couple questions for you, when you have some time thatd be great. I just bought the seahawk 4, the intex motor mount, and for the trolling motor i figure I would try the newport vessels 55ib thrust trolling motor, it's got some cool features, and the mightymax deep cycle battery 12 volt 55ah. I'm trying to figure out what charger would be compatible with my battery. Do you have some suggestions?
tim lynch thank you Tim, the charger listed in the video description will work fine. I started off with a Seahawk (check out my oldest vid)... You're gonna move pretty fast with a 55 lb thrust! Please, subscribe.. more vids are coming
@@ThePNW just subbed! Would I need also to buy a battery box you think? Is it like absolutely essential?
tim lynch I would definitely... Even a $12 one is worth it.... If you get in choppy water you'll have water splashing inside. Newport Vessell makes an awesome battery box for $65.
tim lynch ... And thanks for subbing!
@@ThePNW u think that would fit the battery I got??
