Nikon vs Sony (Modern Z Glass vs Vintage EF L Lenses)

- Is Nikon actually starting to overtake Sony? Everyone shoots Sony now, they are the leading mirrorless brand. Nikon had a slow start, but they are coming on strong. Who knows what the future has after acquiring RED. Let's battle, Nikon ZF with the Z 85mm f1.2 S lens vs the Sony A7S III with Canon EF 85mm f1.2 L lens. Usually the 7 artisans adapter is great for autofocus, but the Sony was hunting a lot. I had my settings jacked up to max speed and sensitivity by mistake. And you can't stop down the Tonies, didn't know that.

The pulsing was so bad that I thought you were in a nightclub
😂😂😂😂😂
Seizure warning needed!!!
That's a plus
BOOM! SSSSS! BOOM! SSSSS!
The canon lens looked like somebody had reversed the front lens element. It was an aberration fest. The Nikon at f1.2 looked nice and 3D pop to me.
I totally agree. He was way out of focus on Canon, even when in focus 😂
The Canon just looked straight up broken yeah, the aperture issue aside
The EF lens was screaming to be removed from that Sony body. - Frank
I think we found out why it was heavily discounted on Amazon. - Frank
The Nikon rig was vastly better looking to me in color, toneh, and pop, even when the Canon was in focus.
I wish we had the footage of you first seeing that footage out of that ef lens. I think I would have lolled.
Definitely!
The excessive background blur is incredibly annoying. The Zf with the 85mm f1.2 looks way better. Canon EF/EF-S AF, when adapted for a EOS M body, is excellent. Maybe it's a Canon to Sony translation thing which degrades AF performance.
Yes, bokeh is overrated. And yes, the conversion makes the af worse. Sony lenses on Nikon bodies works a lot better though
@@chromaticvisuelleEspecially for wide shots too much blur just looks weird to me.
When you concentrate on a specific thing like a face or a bird. I totally understand bokeh because it simulates how I actually perceive things, if that makes sense.
But a full body shot of a person with completely blown out background?
That’s just not how I perceive things. Just seems weird and fake.
for that combo just get a cell phone, Nikon wins and not just by 110%, thats photography.. and worth the carry.
No, something is not right.
F/1.2 is F/1.2
Both are on an 85mm and both are at the same distances.
The character of the bokeh may differ, the sharpness may differ and all kinds of specs, but the general background blur should be in the same ballpark - this is too extreme a diference in blur. At distance I wasn’t so sure, but up close the Z should have much more blur at 1.2
IMO the Z is shot at a different aperture, because it has too little blur for a 85mm 1.2 with the close ups, given that the background is far away. This should be clearly impacted by too much Toneh when he goes up close. Don’t take my word, check Z 85mm 1.2 samples @1.2 at similar distances. Even the Z 1.8 will produce more bokeh at those close ranges.
10:00 reminds me of the video of the creator on the beach where Toneh was born
the poor canon EF lens was struggling in this episode.
The Nikon was much better than that really old Canon lens, as you'd expect.
That Canon would be amazing if you had the luxury of a designated camera operator with you at all times, but it's difficult to have the cinema when you're solo.
Nikon is Clearly the winner here no question.
I'll take the Nikon look definitely ......whether comparing at 1.2 or not .
In my opinion thats a win for the modern glass - Sharper, better contrast, plenty good bokeh - CDAF is not a lens problem!
Nikon Z body with a native Z lens.
Sony body with an adapted EF lens.
Regardless of the fact that the EF lens is much older (1989 vs 2005 for the mk.2) the lens performance is affected by the adapter.
Tony Northrup and Jared Polin love that gaudy stuff. When I first got into photograohy in the late 1970s Nikon was best, and Canon was a budget, low status copycat line.
and then in the late 80s- early'90s, Canon hit with autofocus lenses that worked well; Nikon responded with the poor AF-I system lol. All photojournalists migrated en masse towards white teles
I’m in Toronto now. Leaving this morning. Hotel is a couple of blocks from that CN tower. Was hoping you would be vlogging downtown, but alas, don’t see you.
I think we can see you in the toneh.
the Nikon toneh combo almost gives it a tilt-shift quality. ...which is fun
I'm actually surprised just how much better the Nikon is I am really impressed
I’m a Sony shooter but Nikon hands down in this competition
Nikon much better microcontrast - 3D pop, keep the beast!!
More Tom Thunderpunch, please. He is exciting, eating plants that may have been peed on.
The pee leaf is a crossover from his VP channel.
Like every Nikon user 😅😅😅
bretharians thrive on uric acid waste, a little known fact.
sorry I don't believe that canon lens is at 6.3 but Nikon Z mount lenses are outstanding
We need the Nikon wildlife test. I’m sure I’ll sell my house for a z8 when we see it
I'm not sure if it's the color grading or what, but the EF lens gives me "short film" vibes with the teal sky. I also really like the falloff and bokeh, it's so smooth and looks like watercolor to me.
That's the only down side. You can't stop it down. I can't believe you took us to Paris and didn't show us the Paris
Maybe the Canon on Sony isn't perfect but there's something magic about that Canon! As imperfect as it looked, it was just perfect.
For narratrive stuff where most of it is manual focus anyways, I shall take the less popular position of that once both lenses were at f1.2, and the eyes were in focus, the Canon lens looked better(If the ND filter settings were the same on both.) There was more tonality in the EF lens looking at the exposior on the face. The ZF lens showed more overexposed light on the forehead, plus less gradual fall off when looking at the grass. In editing one can adjust brightness and even sharpness to some degree. But adjusting natural fall off and loss of tonality in editing, is a harsh mistress with blue hair. Having said all that...the only cure for too much 3d pop, is more 3d pop!
Since you have a Zf, and Zeiss Batis lenses in Sony mount, I strongly recommend getting a Megadap ETZ-21 adapter so you can experience those lenses on Nikon.
I like where you’re going with this.
I’m having fun trying out old glass, like Zuiko and even Sears for OM mount, which I used to shoot B/W film stills back in college. Adapting to the S5iix makes pretty much anything old look glorious. The imperfections add so much character.
Seeing Nikon make good cameras and lenses again makes me emotional and so damn happy. I've been binging on 50+ of your videos and so far I've decided on an a6700, but Nikon has a year to make something that can match it with slowmo and price.
Watching your videos is one of my daily pleasures.
I know nothing about cameras, and don't need to...yet here I am!
I think the Nikon looks better in every shot
I used an old Nikon 105 f2.5 on a M43, it looks dreamy.
Here’s a T-Shirt for you. “Sony Technicolor Yawn Lut”
So when you were actually in focus, I much preferred the image coming out of the Sony/Canon combo...
I guess you were shooting in Slog3, so the sky (highlights) is not blown out, the shadow in your face are not as harsh and the forest in the background look very contrasty, punchy and I like the green tone. In other word, I just like your grade 😅
Same thoughts, would love to see the comparison made with a more modern lens that is not screwed by a cheap adapter.
Ive tried many lenses to find the best look and 3dpop and ended up with lumix s pro 50mm 1.4 That thing just looks amazing
That EF 85 looks cloudy. Mold?
I always come for the ethereal sound which comes at the start of the video. 🙂↔️🙂↕️😌
Love the Nikon colors!
You could also get a Fringer EF-Z adapter and try the canon 85 on the ZF..... ;)
If you want vintage looks with modern conviniences, doesn't that take you back to Fujifilm?
The F-mount AF-S 85mm F1.4g is a great lens, which will adapt to your FZ nicely with the FT-Z adaptor, and weighs just 600g. It has both sharpness, pop and smooth toneh. Get the FT-Z without the tripod bulge unless you plan to regularly use tripods.
Maximum Tony achieved :E
Good Morning and happy Thursday! "Nikon is the always".... Quote of the year? I thought your were going start singing some Lenny Kravitz there with that butterfly moment. Was the white balance way off on the Sony here? It was very strange in the side by side. Thanks for the morning laughs. I think being grounded is too painful BTW... Have a rockin' day!
Definitely some micropop. Like every tourist yes I ate in that revolving restaurant back there.
You know there's this amazing invention called shoes! ;) But to the actual subject... the adapter might have failed you with the aperture, but I was impressed that you got "any" continuous AF... I thought that was impossible... ;)
Canon looks more dreamy and, in my opinion, more pleasing. But the nikkor is not bad at all. Little too sharp but popping
Surprised to see the dynamic range looks better on the ZF. Colors are quite yellow on the Sony in comparison. Wonder if that’s because of the EF lens or just a white balance thing? Hopefully Nikon comes out with a vintage styled portrait lens like the 40mm and 28mm. 85 f2? 135 f2.8?
Yeah white balance. That image was way too warm.
same sensor, different bayer color filters.
In my opinion testing the “3D pop” is much easier to see if there is something in the frame that goes from foreground to background at consistent angle like a fence or wall or a train track or trail or hedge- something to see the way de focus turns into focus and back to defocus. You had one video on train track a while back where it was a lot easier to see the focus change character. Either way you’re absolutely right it’s best not to have shoes for lens comparisons
I have EF glass and I can tell you the Nikon('s 3D pop) is way more pleasing
My Nikon D780 arrived last week. Theoretically I could now make videos with old AF-D glass.
The focus hunting seems to me like adapter Sony to EF problem, also the softness seems
like a de tuned lens by a hit
IF they just added hd120 would you switch? I'd like to see you compare z8 to the a7siii and see if you still like it more
They already have HD 120...
i think i have a solution to your focus dilemma, there's a ulanzi portable tripod folds super small and is cheap. Place that where you'd stand, set focus, mark the spot and then at least you also focusing the correct height/place... could work
He's done that countless times before and has now shifted towards including more of the respective lenses' AF performance into the testing mix.
Do you think of using a Modular 8 tuner in these clinical lenses?
Just look wise honestly not blown away with either.. Actually suspect inexpensive MFT Pana 42mm f/1.7 or Oly 45 f/1.8 would look far better on much cheaper MFT bodies 🤔
What is up with that Sony sky color?
Sony shows the purple alien skies of their home world.
Sony colours looked off. I really can't tell the difference in the 3D pop. Maybe they weren't as stark between these two lens.
Your face 5:50 laughed so hard 😂 this channel is the best when things go wrong, it’s so funny
Great comparison.
Nikon is here, and always. Nikon all the way.
this video was funny and interesting, i watched full screen and this is my first comment on your channel
I like the purple hue on the nikkor. Definitely worth 1/10th of the price you paid 🎉
Most camera and lens combinations have different focus capabilities depending on max aperture (for stills) and shooting aperture (for video.) It usually kicks in around f5.6, f8, or f11 depending on the combination. Also, if you use a teleconverter that greatly limits focus capability. And sometimes aperture affects max shutter speed. And sometimes aperture affects max frames per second for stills. And obviously, shutter speed affects frames per second.
Great thing about Nikon Z is that you can adapt near everything on the mount. Now there are AF adapters for:
- Canon EF
- Nikon F
- Sony E
- Fujifilm X
And as the time passes maybe would be for Canon RF, L Mount, Fuji GFX.
For me as a hobbyist that's a big win.
There's always a downside to adapting. Whether it's AF performance, or battery drain with some adapters, clunkiness, not being able to stop down the aperture etc.
@@cameraconspiracies yeah! But it's a cheap funny thing to experiment. Not for professionals, not for high skill level people, but for me with my mediocre photos it's a good thing to get a special look with a $40usd AF lens 😅. It's like driving and repairing an old car for hobbyists in mechanics and detailing, full of problems and quirky but a funny thing.
If you want to stop down, use the Nikon z 85/1.8S. It’s cheaper, lighter etc
Something is clearly wrong with the Canon lens. It’s either not at the right aperture or has vaseline smeared on the front element. Depth of field is way off. It’s not even close. It’s going to have a little chromatic aberration on high contrast areas wide open, but that would clear up by f4.
Sometimes VP looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about VP is he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn’t even seem to be livin’… ’til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’.
Nikkor 85mm 1.4 D seemed to have both 3D pop and sharpness, still thinking about it if I'm buying Nikon again
Are these colors straight out of camera? Both look kinda weird. Canon warm green and Nikon Magenta cool ... if I have to choose would choose Sony + Canon color-wise. But AF sux ass.
If you add the weight of the adapter, the Canon setup is probably at least as heavy as the Nikon. The Canon looked good on the R8; but adapted to a Sony, it sucks a$$. Couldn't focus. Green color. Awful. Go with all Nikon.
I had that 7Artisans adapter. It worked with one of my EF lenses, the 17-40 F4 L, and didn't autofocus reliably on any of the others. I swapped it out for the Sigma MC-11, and Sigma says that it's only for Sigma lenses but it worked perfectly on not only the Sigma 100-400 EF, but also the 17-40L, and the 50mm 1.8 Mark 1 and the 40mm 2.8. And it's not expensive, either. (This was on a Sony A7R III.)
In video?
@@cameraconspiracies I'll try it and get back to you!
About the AF hunting, its probably nothing to do with the older Canon EF L glass - most EF to E mount adapters default to contrast detect on Sony bodies (including the Viltrox). The only adapter I know of that provides the decent phase detect AF compatibility with Canon EF is the Metabones Smart Adapter Mark V. That said, I would love to see a Z8 review from you someday!
are you using viltrox adapters for Af? In my experience Fringer are far superior
I agree with everything you said…The Nikon Z lens looked better in every way imaginable.
adjusting the color on the sony a bit away from yellow would be an idea maybe ?
Dji + lidar focus will make focus on Canon ef better...
Hard to explain..i like both video..
My questions: Zeiss otus 28mm f1.4 ..do you Like it?
I crossed my eyes on the side by side footage and let the images merge in my eyes, and let me tell you THAT is some real 3D pop right there :) (because it will be a real 3D stereoscopic image).
The Vintage Lens is a whole different beast, putting old lenses on new cameras opens a world you cannot escape anymore. Give a fck about sharpness and perfection, character and imperfections all day 🎉
Love the videos dude but why the heck are you not using the Bokeh master Sony 100mm stf lens. It’s a t5.6 but the bokeh is like butter
Something really weird going on with the Toneh on the Canon, Idk, it just doesn't look like f6.3
Edit : I'm refering to the first half of the video where the Nikkor looks stopped down but the Canon wide open
Woo hoo!
Once you got them both at T1.2, the Nikkor is clearly superior for 3D pop (and everything else). I paused the video in multiple spots where the A7SIII/Canon were in focus and screenshot. Split the images into their own/saved and used XNView MP to count the number of individual colors in each picture. On average, the Nikkor images had 25% more colors - which you could visibly see with the better contrast, dynamic range and micro-contrast. Nikkor FTW.
I would sure hope the nikon lens has better contrast, it is quite literately 30 years newer...
Canon glass on Sony looks better, more cinematic colors or maybe it's your colorgrade, but it is more pleasing to the eye.
The Nikkor looks so much better though
I don't know about the lenses but the dynamic range of the sony is way better. Are both cameras in standard profile ?
That Sony EF adapter doesn't seem to work for aperture or autofocus, but AF performance was never great on the EF 85 1.2, and it predates video being a serious thing on DSLRs. It might be worse than the EF 50 1.0 (which works better than it has any right to with an RF adapter.)
You should do a flare test or a low light test with that expensive glass
You are by far the best and most consistent content creator that I follow🙌🏽
Good effort. Shame about the Sony not playing ball with the Canon tonehs. The ZF is impressively brighter at T1.2, but the EF + Sony combo has a pleasing hue to it and the chromatic background blur on the skyscrapers is an interesting look too. But that AF is useless. Just go manual focus for vintage glass for video.
The 85mm 1.8S for nikon Z costs less than a grand new (i paid only $600 for mine used) and is just as good. It shoots perfectly sharp wide open. Guaranteed you wont see a difference.
I guarantee you I will, I have that comparison coming lol.
Haha yessssss. Cant wait. I love the 85mm 1.8S. For the money, its hard to beat
@@Labunga43 It's the G lens I'm comparing. Way cheaper than the S.
@@cameraconspiracies The 85 1.8G is not even CLOSE to the 85 1.8S. Totally different league. Totally different tech used in the lens too.
I'm so confused with this video. You needed a canon Lens that was first manufactured in 1989 in a sony body with a 30€ adapter to prove that a Modern Nikon (that costs more than the sony and the old canon lens together) is better? And that should prove that Nikon is actually starting to overtake Sony? god... I love this channel. The chaos is incredible. Regarding stills, Nikon quality is fantastic. Regarding video, on a consumer level, Nikon is on pair with a 2015 Sony a6300 and I'm not sure if the 4k of the a6300 isn't better.
I recommend asking viltrox to send you the 85mm 1.8 Z mount to test, or just outright buy it for $300 used. Very nice 85mm, good AF, and much less weight than the Nikkor 1.2. FYI, unless it's AF-s your vintage Nikkor glass will not auto focus with an FTZ.
In the last shot, the colors on the Nikon are way better, the Sony with the EF glass looks so dingy for some reason
You became Toné. You brought us to the Toronto Tower (that's what Japanese people call it. They have a Tokyo Tower) and refused to show us the Toronto Tower. The only reason I know the Tower was in the background is because you told us about it.
Isn't the algorithm for autofocusing in the camera? The lens can not see the image on the sensor and decide which way to change focus. Most likely the Sony A7S III + Adapter + EF 85mm was using only contrast detect, not phase detect. Kasey, can you confirm this? Could be a video topic. I experienced exactly this on my own Sony A7R III + Adapter + Sigma 50mm. Autofocus was not good. It did not use phase detect, it used only contrast detect. Maybe Sony did not allow third-party adapter and lens to use phase detect. (Nothing wrong with my camera; with my new Sony 35mm/1.4 GM it focuses quickly.)
It clearly uses phase detect in this video as I get closer to the camera.
Beautiful Toronto skyline background, I like the Nikon look but for an artsy feel, maybe something in-between the Canon and Nikon. LOL, I am lazy so I would fix it in post with Resolve using magic mask on the subject and tweaking with the blur effect. If you can't afford the the real glass, virtual glass wins IMO.
The Nikon looks like an over sharpened higher contrast action cam. The Sony with Canon glass feels like I’m having a stroke or living with some form of Cataract/glaucoma.
Idk what you did but the sony cannon combo has jacked colors today, the sky is too dark and it's green
The Nikon was beautiful. Esp at midrange distance.
But... The Canon was alluring... Interesting... As long as a person could look past that lousy autofocus.
Would have loved to see the Black Magic OG as part of this comparison. It kicks ass.
