  • Point and shoot cameras died a long time ago. Why is there a resurgence recently? And why are they so expensive now? They aren't vintage collectors items, they're just bad.

It's the kids that never owned a camera before. They started with film cameras. Then film prices went up. Now they figured out old small sensor point and shoots look like film grain, so they started grabbing up those. Ditto with VHS and Hi8 video cameras, and now old digital camcorders. The P&S crowd latches on to particular models too, based on a bunch of UA-camrs.

When it comes to the 80's film got better with better contrast and punch colors.
In the 90's colors got better and highlight recovery got better and more dynamic range.

@@DarkTrapStudio I've looked into the CCD look its not the CCD sensor but the color science they used back in the day.
Colton Matocha here on UA-cam did a side by side test of a Olympus camera with a CCD sensor and a CMOS sensor and only the yellow was a little different. Olympus is really good with color science.
leehaze1 also did a side by side test with a Pentax CCD camera and Pentax CMOS and only the red was a little different.
now there can be a different with noise and some people like the noise from some cameras as it can give a film look and Olympus is also very good with noise looking like film grain.

He's on your side though. He's annoyed that people who want this should be paying such prices for it. I've noticed it too. Point and shoots are easy for predatory up sellers on eBay to understand because they are single units, unlike interchangeable lens systems. Every month a bunch of side hustle people look at the stats they pay to access that tells them where the new uptick is, and recently, it's been in point and shoots.
Your point is totally fair, I just don't think you understand what he's saying. He doesn't care that you use a point and shoot, he cares that someone would pay two hundred canadian for a non-mint used one on facebook marketplace.

talked to the younger people at my workplace, she said the point and shoots are sought after cause everything these days is shot on phones, and there's a very obvious rinse-repeat look to that which is boring to them.
they're apparently just looking for something different, and the old digi look works cause its different and more authentic that way. These cameras have Tons of weird and bad camera manufacturer imaging decisions resulting in really weird inconsistent digital images full of individual character.
i can see it; like how this video was oddly more 'relatable' and fresh, compared to the usual modern high resolution image presentation.

    • @MarkOakleyComics

I was giving drawing lessons, and this one kid had a sketchbook full of all these characters made out of little squares. Like 80's Space Invaders. It wasn't the first time I'd seen this. I asked him, "What is this?"
Pixel art. He found it more fun and interesting than today's super polished stuff. I grew up with that stuff and we all celebrated as it evolved, but for him, those old designs hold a similar appeal as dinosaur fossils or something. Nothing looks quite like it, that's for sure.
      What comes around, goes around.
On a side note... Retired Propagandist, Ellis Medavoy, noted that over time, news media becomes more and more polished and people unconsciously start to disconnect from it because they recognize on a deep level that it's a dream, not reality. Rough and ready, (AKA UA-cam reporters), gained a lot more trust partly because they aren't polished. They're reporting from the same world regular people live in.
And because nobody gives this little factoid enough value, the UA-camrs who mod up to the best gear, (Hello 'Daily Wire'), enter that same dream-time stratosphere and begin to lose people in the same way. Old Jordan Peterson videos were garbage quality, but electrifying. Now they're over-produced, and slip into that same disconnected dream state.

I rarely use my phone for photos or videos, mainly because there are no buttons or dials to adjust anything. The Sony point and shoots have dials and buttons like regular big mirror less cameras, and they take up no room in your bag or pocket. One of theses days I’ll find a deal on a mk7.

from someone in the camera industry.... A lot of camera brands are only focusing on creating their core line up of cameras. This excludes all point and shoot models and that's why there are next to none out there right now. It's been crazy tough.. a lot of people are asking for them, I am asking the brands for them. I found this out a number of months ago when I went to sell a couple Canon Cybershots on Facebook. I got TONS of messages and made way more than they were truly worth. I told the mid 20s year old girl who came to pick it up that I got tons of messages and she said these cameras are becoming very popular on Instagram/TikTok because of the vintage digital look with flash... Guess it's just another retro trend like polaroids. ALSO I came across a girl on Marketplace reselling point and shoots for hundreds of dollars after she bedazzled them with like 15 beads maybe and added some dumb keychain bullshit to the wrist strap... I think anyone who's got one collecting dust in a closet needs to unload them fast before these gen Z kids realize they over spent in order to capture their life events in shitty low res quality.

I can think of many reasons to pick point and shoot cameras over cellphones. In most situations they are more versatile than any cellphone. They are small enough to fit in a pocket. Good to great optical zoom. You dont have to worry about some odd notification or call messing up your shot.
If you dont want to lug around a DSLR/mirrorless and a bunch of lenses. Point and shoot is a great option. The best camera is the one you have with you, so if all you have is your cell, its better than nothing. Id never recommend one as a primary camera though.

If I had a choice between damaging my phone, or a point-n-shoot camera... There are reasons a street photographer may want to use a simple point-n-shoot instead of a Fuji or Olympus. If you wanted to vlog outside on a rainy day, I doubt you'll want to take your Sony a7-III. You might if you don't care if it gets wet of stolen. Maybe if they made it nicer to get to a manual mode on smart phones I would use it, but some point-n-shoot cameras have better controls (buttons, dials) than a cell phone.

So many aspects to this video. The prices for some of this stuff are stupidly insane, no doubt there. Many phones are way better quality than the older cameras, but many point and shoots are still inherently better than the phones, and for me, it's the zoom. Even if I bought the best phone on the market right now, I couldn't have real optical zoom I can get on my point and shoot. Frankly, I wish I bought a second one of my current/main point and shoot because it's literally better than the latest generation of it. The newer model is technically better, but physically, I've heard nothing but complaints, that the older one focuses better. It sucks too because mine is wearing out!

Also they are better than a lot of modern cameras in many ways, especially for the money (keep in mind inflation). The only thing that serves the typical consumer better than the 2000s canon point and shoots is the nikon 1 system, but since photographers didn't like due to sensor size it it's not supported now so a dead end.

I don't know about the used market but I have a Sony HX-99 from 2017 I still use on the regular and, yeah, in some situations my phone takes equally good or better pictures but for the most part it's both faster and easier for me to take better photos with the Sony than any phone I've tried. I don't care about video so I don't know about that part with either. Optical zoom is better than computed zoom and an actual viewfinder in the sun is far better as well. As for picture quality being garbage, well, not when you know what you're doing and keep your expectations realistic. I took pictures inside Luray caverns in May with both my phone and the HX-99 and, sure, on a small screen they look of similar quality. But printed out at 11x14 the phone images are noisy as heck and you notice out of focus areas. The camera images have more true to life color, depth and clarity as well as no noise when scaled up. Does my A7IV take even better pictures in similar situations? Absolutely. But it's also bulky and not easy to put in a pocket to walk around in a cave with. And I can't take an interchangeable lens camera into a concert without a press pass. Sure, ten rows back and the phone may do as good a job. But across the arena a real lens is better.

Old point and shoots are fun. Some are quite capable too. Yeah, they're not relevant, but why should that matter? Prices are hilarious for some of them, but that's the case with any re-emerging market with a limited supply.

I just send 14 point and shoots to a guy. Canon ixus 190 was one of them and probably the the best. Zoom and stabe was amazing but pixel peeping on the images made me puke. So I just gave them all to that guy. He thought it was worth a fortune. I cant stand those cameras.

a new $90 lamp in 1950 would be $1200 now adjusted for inflation. That is part of the reason why antiques, instruments, art etc go up in value.

I have the Canon G7x Mk II, which I got used on Amazon for like $250, and now that thing goes for $700 and up. I have some much older point and shoots with CCDs. The GRIIIx, the highest quality and most recent point and shoot you can buy, really is an excellent camera.
I think the reason why these are so popular has to do with the de-digitization fad, people wanting to replace their phone's camera functionality with something simpler, and then, well, influencers and the 'it looks like film' thing.

Point and shoot market was a fine example of brands being unable to find the right formula for a product, failing over and over and finally giving up only to see how Fuji and Sony dominate the segment single handedly just by keeping on.
The general story of the Camera makers from my point of view was:
Step one: Make point and shoot cameras but limit the features not to harm the sales of their bigger cameras
Step two: keep on omitting the “video” features like unlimited video recording, mic and headphone jack, fast lenses, stabilizatiin, 4K, etc
Step three: start complaining that smartphones are killing the segment, where in fact it was them all along, crippling the products

I think its more about collection not about functionality or if these cameras are good.
Also there was this trend on instagram where people doing fake selfies with these old digicams with their faces on the displays of them. maybe thats why they became popular again.. like Hipster zoomers love to take analog photos nowadays.
