Eeeh it was a pretty stacked lineup. TF one is AMAZING, but 2024 was just great for animation. The only one i'd say that TF one could beat out for a nomination was inside out 2.
This year is like the complete opposite of last year. If last year consisted almost exclusively of bangers, this year has Emilia Perez most likely pulling a Crash 2020s edition
The fact Charlie doesn’t know Robby Williams it made me realize that he is so American. He was SO popular. Like his music is genuinely some of the best.
You know what this reminds me of? Naked Gun 33 and a Third. The third act takes place at the Oscars and a joke that is set up is that a box office bomb was somehow nominated for Best Picture. That's what this actually feels like.
The Brutalist is actually such a good movie, I'm so glad as a hungarian how well they adapted the post world war despair of hungarian jews looking for a new and better life. Bonus point for Dávid Jancsó for being nominated for Best Editing
@@nelisezpasce read more about it, it was used to render drawings that appear for only seconds and to emphasize certain vowels when the protagonists spoke Hungarian with a software that has been used in so many other films before. @@CooperStephenson-g9u I'm sure it's winning visual effects though. Yeah not sure about the other categories. The oscars is not just about quality, it's also about marketing and politics. Everything Everywhere All At Once was pretty much the surprising exception to that occurrence ...
10:05 Oscar bait films win Oscars which look good on resumes for every person and company involved in the film, no matter the general reception of the film. We know that the first Suicide Squad film was poorly received for it’s quality, but nevertheless, when an industry person hears “I worked on the Academy Award-winning film Suicide Squad” their ears perk up.
So I read the comments and learned that Emilia Perez is supposed to be a movie about Mexican and trans representation but it is universally hated by Mexican and trans people. Seriously, who made this film? Ubisoft?
While it's got some stacked competition, I'm really hoping Wallace and Gromit wins best animated film. Flow and Wild Robot are definitely great movies and I won't even be upset if they win, but claymation is such an underappreciated art form that deserves more praise and W&G is a franchise that is very dear to me
If you think Claymation deserves praise, you should root for Memoir of a Snail. I haven't seen it, but Mary and Max (by the same director) is one of the best animated movies of all time.
Unfortunately they’re most likely winning best Original Song, Best International Film, and probably best Sup Actress too (unless Ariana takes it since she’s really the only other front runner)

Yeah I swear everyone here is like we haven't seen any of these movies.. I feel like that is more of an indictment on you. I love myself a good superhero movie or genre movie, but if that's the only thing you watch then you're wasting your time talking about the Oscars lol. Especially because studios don't want to market original content anymore. And the average movie goer is not going to the theater to see The Brutalist just based on the trailer. The little bit of marketing these movies get is through awards and even here these CBM fans have a problem. Damn.
Second this! I feel like Charlie would hella appreciate Sean Baker’s directing style and approach to storytelling! I’d love to hear his thoughts on The Florida Project and Red Rocket as well! Hopefully he’ll watch them someday and report on it.
This isn't as a big of a factor as you might think. The reason is more simple: they don't like Sci fi. And they view his works as typical blockbuster affair and think anyone could do it.
@ryancarlson8297 it isn't. Tell me what deserves best picture nomination prior to September. Challengers maybe, but really it's not the Oscar's having recency bias, it has everything to do with studios deliberately releasing movies closer to the holidays. What movies that came out in janurary, let alone February that seem like competent competition if there wasn't 'recency bias'
Apparently, for the Spanish Speakers, The dialogues in Emilia Perez and even the musical numbers sound like it's something written from Google Translate. Even they have no idea what Selena Gomez is singing on her musical numbers. Also, Selena Gomez's Spanish is so bad because she moved to California since she was a kid and raised by a white mom makes her not knowing her native language. Also, the casting director said they couldn't find any Mexican actress while Salma Hayek and Eiza Gonzales exist! Salma could play as the Cartel's wife and Eiza could play as the lawyer which played by Zoe Saldana.
I honestly believe this is at least half of why the movie is as decorated as it is. I'm Dutch, I know very little about how Mexican cartels operate and I don't speak Spanish. I walked out of the theatre not too upset with what I saw, I thought it was quite an interesting story about how you cannot escape your past no matter how far you try to run from it. The other half and 13 nominations I cannot explain, but I think if you didn't pick up on the poor dialogue, accents and writing or the display of Mexico I think it's not unfair to think it's an okay movie
@@oxey_ The plot honestly isn't that bad but it would be better if it's not made in musical. Also, if you want to see how Mexican cartel look like watch Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul. Both of the show is directed by Vince Gilligan who is a white guy but he at least did researches how Mexican culture and cartel look like and it mostly shot on Alburquerque, New Mexico. Meanwhile, the director of this movie is lazy, he won't search anything about Mexico, their culture and their cartel.
I worked on the documentary feature porcelain war which is in this years nominations. What I’ve realized in the industry is that at the academy level everything is entirely political. Each film has a team of people who blast their networks and get in touch with as many Oscar’s voters as possible, because at this level, especially with the documentary genre, these films are all so good that it kind of seems to turn into an impression game and a race for the votes. This is part of a producers job, to ensure the success of your film. So people who have a suspicion that the Oscar’s are rigged aren’t entirely wrong. It’s just not always prechosen from the get go. There is a lot of genuine voting and competition that happens.
I have been scrolling for 10 minutes and not one mention of Porcelain war had been mentioned, and Charlie skipped over the Documentary Nominations. If you truly worked on Porcelain war I just want to say thank you, I think you know why. Glory to Ukraine.

Eeeh it was a pretty stacked lineup. TF one is AMAZING, but 2024 was just great for animation. The only one i'd say that TF one could beat out for a nomination was inside out 2.
It's almost like the Oscar are bought and sold behind close doors and have nothing literally nothing to do with the quality of a movie
