The 30 Day Shake Diet Experiment / Ep 1

  • Shake Diets are thought of as straight-up bad for weight loss.
You'll be starving, ruin your metabolism and even lose loads of muscle. Well, most of these are just simply not true.
I'm keen to investigate the idea of replacing most of your meals with a meal replacement shake. I want to see what the weight loss will be like and even how much body fat I drop whilst maintaining or even growing muscle mass.
The Shake Diet will consist of 2 x Meal Replacement Shakes and 1 main meal. Simple as that.
For 30 days I'll be releasing videos on what I'm doing, how I'm doing it and what kind of results I get from drinking meal replacement shakes for the best part of my diet.
If you are keen to learn more hit subscribe and like the video. If you have any questions please drop them in the comments section below.

I did this for ten months on deployment only eating whatever greens and beans were available at the mess hall once a day. I made my shakes with 2 scoops of protien, 1 scoop of greens, 1 pack of oatmeal and coffee every morning, had greens for dinner and another shake after the evening workout. I got leaner and stronger than I had ever been in my life and didn't feel malnourished at all.

I’m only halfway through but it did kinda make me chuckle around 3 minutes in when all I could think about were slim fast commercials in the mid to late 90s saying to have a shake for breakfast and lunch and then a “sensible” dinner.

Hi Gordon I did this couple years back just shakes but allowed one meal a week. Only did it for 3 weeks lost over stone and my strength increases. I was doing 5x5 training working 3 shifts. I’ll be honest easiest diet I have ever done. Then after 3 weeks I replaced a shake with a meal each day to slowly get my food back to maintenance level kept it for over 6 months. Good luck

Did you find that this speed of weight loss helped motivate you to keep going? It’s been interesting so far. Having dieted for bodybuilding shows etc in the past I know how much personalised nutrition plays a role in being able to enjoy the process more. I like the convenience but miss chewing lol.

Nevertheless hope you’ve stocked up with plenty of flavours! A baw hair away from 90kg, Am going to start Monday 😃 Edit; ordered up and Went with PWorks as on special offer, although 25g protein per serving is a tad lower than 0.3 x BW

I’m a woman in my 30s, who is pretty active and on largely healthy and unprocessed diet (plenty of fiber from vegetables, quality fats from olive and coconut oils, fish, lean meat and whole grains like pui lentils and wild rice - I’d say it’s on the low carb side but not an extreme).
I‘ve been trying this out since the 2nd of Feb, in an attempt to shed some weight I’ve put on after I’ve quit smoking and leg injury last year, which prevented me from running for many months during lock downs. I should mention that I have been known to have a sluggish metabolism, but no health issues other than mild chronic kidney disease.
Results so far are wildly encouraging:
    Starting weight: 74.3kg
    Current weight: 72.6 kg
    Disclaimers:
    1) NUTRITION: I use low sugar whey isolate (1g of carbs per scoop), take magnesium, calcium, omega 3, collagen, coenzyme Q10 and multivitamin supplements, to prevent malnutrition and sports injuries during this challenge. I also add some Himalayan salt to my shakes, to help replace sodium lost during exercise. I consider adding fibre supplement to it from next week.
    2) EXERCISE. I’m completing HIIT Max challenge available on UA-cam by Body Rock, which I’d recommend for anyone who is not new to exercise and is craving a personal trainer experience without a massive spend. You will find easier challenges also by them if you’re new to this form of intense effort, along with advice on correct form to prevent injuries. I do this in the gym daily, near my feeding window of 6-8 hours.
    3) RESULTS: I have an advanced electronic body composition scales which showed 0.3% decrease in fat mass, 0.3% increase in muscle mass and, interestingly, an improved water weight composition by 2%. So I seem to be shedding fat and while keeping myself hydrated, which is great news!
I will post weekly updates for the next 8 weeks, after which time I will replace one shake with a healthy salad with some seafood or another rich source of protein, and after a month, I’ll replace the 2nd shake with healthy dinner (lean meat/fish + steamed green veg in low carb dressing). Carbs will be added last and I expect to regain some of the water weight once this happens, but this shouldn’t lead to increase in fat mass.
Hopefully I’ll manage to keep all the lost weight with this approach.
If you’ve already tried this and have suggestions to improve my approach, please feel free to comment :)

Look forward to the series! So weight loss is the goal, yeah? I wondered your thoughts if you were in a maintenance phase - would you look to have a shake based diet for that too? Or maybe could the shake serve to add in a stress free, convenient surplus meal to meet the extra calorie needs?

    • @Gordongreenhorn
      @Gordongreenhorn  4 роки тому +3

It is. I’m using this as ‘pre-gym opening’ primer to get ready for a full building programme after the 30days. I think so. The protein content is a priority and will make it much easier when on the go. A lot of this is taking the thinking out of the equation.

Well I worked for a company were we was not allowed to sell thr products until we educated ourselves and took the product ourselves before selling to show they work or they don't, I took a shake which just like a smooth no grittiness, or powder feel while drinking quite addictive shake, two weeks weight loss place was the actual plan and 10 min workout, but I took thr work out more to like 1 hour a day, The results were fantastic I never gained any weight back. its been almost 8 9 years ago but I remember that journey strongly as we always had to give our talks on how the plan worked for me. I not a huge person just little chubby I lost over a Stone and the results weren't that I lost a stone I also see my body coming into shape and I felt so healthy no headaches and pains that I normally get how everever I did get a kind a sickish feeling but it faded away quickly, I drank 6 8 glasses water a day for 2 weeks straight and with the shake was some vitamin tablets so I think thr shake was some nice plant stuff and it was thr vitamin and that did all the great stuff.
it's coming on 10 11 years now and I decided to hit the gym without any shakes or anything in 3 weeks my weight has dropped I look slim quite a bit I feel healthier and my clothes are looking really good and I have noticed this and this was with taking no protein shake.
Now because I don't like to eat breakfast in the morning I do try but I hate smell of food in the Mornings, so this shake says have it any time but best to consume on a empty stomach so I did felt a bit like my old shake a bit sickly but nothing bad thr shake is smooth nice and not too sweet and tastes great just this one seems a slight sandy no matter how much you shake or blend, but the feeling goes after a bit. The thing is this shake suppose to help my training as im supposed to eat less burn more o generally eat healthy but less I used consume 4x the food plus huge potion sizes I luv food. but breakfast not for me always, I lots weight in 3 weeks I've took the shake to help me with more benefits as I do t eat breakfast, but I feel this might just make me put on weight rather than lose. it does say you see results in a week so let's see, as I always have the shake in place of breaks fast on an empty stomach and maybe have a little toast a fruit or just a cup of tea then my shake, it might make strong in this area but would you really want to substitute food for a shake no. Well I find that shakes have vitamin in them so if you was to take vitamin with water alone yiu would sometime need to eat or having meds you would need to eat sometimes, so I believe because it has vitamin in this it should not be substituted for food how ever as it say results are better on a empty stomach so I will wait till I eat my one meal which it's sometimes 2 or 3 meals I don't stick to not eating food a women supposed to consume 2500 calories I don't even eat this much I probably eat around 700 calories I could not eat less amd burn calories if I did that I lose all the calories in my body so then my will eat that and fat will gain back, I beleive eating a reasonable amount of food during the day, a very very light breakfast to start workout because who can workout on a full stomach, I started to see the results and the effect on my body with old shake so I'm challenging this new shake to see if it helps me skip a meal or Stat full or workout better or do I put the weight back on becsue of this shake so. Hear it goes I'm going to have the shake in place if breakfast only I eat lunch sometimes but I don't want deprive myself if food I luv food don't train the body not to eat its not good. it's say only eat 600 calories a day which for me might be more I want my brain to see I'm taking this because I eat no breakfast or it's becomes heavy or impossible. so don't stop eating food if u take the shakes you eat a good diet eat normal food what you like you will get same results,it's like a person who runs in the gym faster than fast but the other person is slowe pace takes axrata more longer but still gains the same results just walking so why kill urself of nit eating food is a very important thing in life and it should nit tell ur brain to stop eating. But if yiu can do this do it with caution and safety and let your doctor know. I'm on an extreme protein I will challenge that with what I normally do and see if it still works. I work I don't want to gain weight back. I did keep it off for 7 8 years which was very good. but this is a new shake. I'd say just change your diet to eat healthy and that should do the trick I became vegan for 2 years but then went vegetarian but I introduced meat back into my diet due weakness, I was eating lost of protein stuff when I was vegan and I was healthy, so now I have reduced my meat again as I sometimes beleive that when you have too much protein in your diet that is what causes fat to build up over the months becsue my diet now is like my lifestyle I eat healthy normally but even with that I feel I dint get enough protein so this is were the shakes can help so healthy diet and shakes for your protein I think it's all about balance. okay guys that sick feeling I had has gone away but still have some shake left as I write. This 30 day challeng is so interesting and I luvd the content of the video. Thank you so much great video

600-700kcal a day is probably not healthy. I recommend to consult it with your doctor, especially if its under 1200kcal.

Bariatric doctors utilize this all the time to have their patients lose a lot of weight quickly before having the stomach-reduction surgery. They (doctors) know that it’s safe because the patients ONLY have a liquid protein diet for several weeks prior to the surgery in order to de-fat the liver making it less dangerous to go ahead with the surgery. I don’t understand why they don’t just tell the patients to continue doing that (even on a modified liquid diet) until their desired weight is achieved instead of dangerous surgery? Too much $$$ lost maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️

Iv done a shake only diet for 2 months
      Two shakes only
Low carb to get into keto
I take vitamins too and once yiu get into keto it’s just a mind game
I work as a bricklayer and had more energy than eating a normal diet
I drank only water and black coffee
I went light headed a few times but drank water and it passed
      First week I lost 8lb
Every week after it was a good steady fat loss as I measured my body

With just the shakes, you’ll basically be fasting 😆 if they’re protein? shakes, you’ll be burning off 30% of it just digesting the protein.
You could honestly have a 1,000 calorie dinner and still be in a good deficit

Actually it's eat more protein, don't eat less, you need to sustain your muscle and organs that your body needs the energy.
How is your body to function with no fuel.
Eat less bad processed foods and cut sugars, no orange juice, no fruits, consult healthcare professional to check blood tests and organ function.

It's not just about nutrients. It's about a bunch of other health effects resulting from not chewing, not releasing enough stomach acid, easier absorption of nutrients, too much protein (for a regular person. The shakes are only for athletes as 'supplements' not as 'replacements' or for weight loss). 30 days might be ok but if you do that for a few more months you'd just loose a significant enough bone mass in your jaw for noticeable problems with your teeth. Don't spread harmful advice when you don't know what you're talking about.

2 out of 3 meals here are shakes so by this simple logic we can call it a shake diet.
