Other people might be able to play the same notes...but no one else can make it sound like David Gilmour. One of the finest guitarists and musicians in history.
I was very humbled while watching this. I feel as though I'm not looking at the man David Gilmour. I feel as though I'm looking at a God, in the form of David Gilmour. Whenever I hear a riff of his, I think to myself, "This is not a man who learned an instrument to make money, or gain fame. This is a man who speaks through his riffs." Each and every one of them strikes me in the deepest part of my soul, and I will never forget any of them, no matter how long I live or go without hearing one. One of the greatest human beings the world has known thus far, IMHO.
Tyler W Very touching sentiment Tyler, we couldn’t agree more. Our staff reveres his guitar work, especially his solo stuff and love his “live” LP’s such as Gdansk and Pompeii. They are sonically amazing, just pure ear candy. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If you like, follow us on Facebook for #FloydFriday for everything David Gilmour and Pink Floyd.
Richard Wright's contributions to their music are not just notable but necessary, appropriate, clearly stated and yet subtle, emotive, and always in context with what was happening on the other instruments; in other words, highly valuable! RIP Richard Wright. Thank you for your 🎶, kind sirs! CBF
I've been asked many times over the years in casual conversation who I would have lunch with of all the people in the universe. My answer is always the same... David Gilmour. He speaks to my soul with his guitar. I can't imagine myself without his music.
British music is the best, the greatest rock acts. It has this special quality to it, so so much better than American rock in my mind. I'm not from either countries by the way. Pink Floyd must be the essence of all things music. When everything that's right about music comes together we get Pink Floyd.
@C L I posted my personal opinion about British music acts and PF. Every musician is inspired by something or someone. If any country has been inspired and affected by foreign cultures it's America. There's almost nothing 100% native American except from perhaps the native Indians. But I can enjoy "American pie" although most of it is based on what the Europeans brought into the country. Same as I can enjoy American folk music although it's mostly built on what the European settlers brought with them into the US. The list of examples is long cause the American history is short compared to most other countries. Just live and enjoy what you received I say. My preference is British bands.
I find David Gilmour as one of the best musicians from the then and now. He's very deep. A true perfectionist in every sense. To spend time listening to him create something would be so interesting. I would love to here him just doodle around ( for lack of ). He never doodles, that, I'm quite sure with the talent he has.
Damn I'm glad I found these interviews. Thanks very much Mudman. David is the one person I would love to just kick it with at his place and listen to him play and talk about his life. I wish we where friends man!
David Gilmour is one of my all time favorite guitar players. What I really enjoy about David’s guitar playing is not just how wonderful it sounds, but how he is always relaxed, and makes it seem so easy. What I also admire about David is his personality. I really love how he doesn’t let ego get to his head and isn’t an asshole to everybody. I hope to see this man in concert before he is gone or officially done with music.
Mine too. My favorite drummer is Phil Collins. Would have loved to have seen a Gilmour/Collins album with Phil on the drums but Phil had damaged his spinal column and neck from the tambourine jigs he did on a nightly basis in 2007 on the Genesis reunion tour.
Right on Branck, this is one of the best interviews with Mr. Gilmour I know of. I wouldn't mind to listen to it for longer, it's interesting what he has to say about creating and finding the sounds.
gilmour is my hero my happiness my salvation from the shit i was in cause of him im playin guitars and all my guitars r strats the red one and the black and the white im crazy about this man hes a very special intelligent kind man abd again he saved my life hes music hit my heart to not continue in the shit i was and i started playing he s solo s my favourite are all of them all songs are fuckin amazing but my favourites are on the turning away and shine on and i play them very well thankx to himTHANK U MR.GILMOUR I LOVE U MAN
Saw Floyd 5 times;........Got to one of the shows on the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour early and was fortunate enough to hear Gilmore just twanging away randomly for a short time ........It was awesome.
Someone gave me a little pill. An hour later put on UMMAGUMMA. As Roger Waters screamed in the AXE song? I stopped time! Been a huge fan since. That was late 1969.
This is an interesting interview. Although, it saddens my heart to know the harsh reality of the loss of Roger Keith (a.k.a. "Syd") Barrett, Richard William (a.k.a. "Rick") Wright, Peter Martin Christopherson & Storm Elvin Thorgerson (the latter two, formerly of the Hipgnosis collective). I hope that they are all jamming in the afterlife, smoking marijuana & sharing philosophies.
Drojdier Boschetar Still though, do they count every play from every radio station? And in 2014 do they count internet radio like Spotify or Pandora? I feel like the number is some official record-thumping number EMI pulled outta some office slaves butt.
Even without your plays, the number 330.000 is a joke. That would mean that on average, the song would be played 26 times each day on the radio in the US. And it's much more than that.
There is an almost earthbound mellifluous nature to his playing that simply doesn't tax your nature in any way. It is almost too pure. Some time ago, many glasses emptied one late night with a couple players and an engineer friend we had an extended conversation of odd duos we thought would work. The longest section we laughed and pondered was Gilmore and McCartney. Consider the possibles.
I usually get a creepy feeling when I first hear an interviewer begin asking questions or fishing for a response from one (David Gilmour) - how can mere words even convey an intelligent exchange with a man as deep and great as Gilmour ? DG seems to be a perfect manifestation of other worldly intelligence and power tempered by humility and wisdom !
I saw them in Montreal in 1977 at the release of the Animals album, when they flew a plane over the opening in the Olympic stadium and dropped fabric sheep and cows into the arena (they were animal shaped parachutes). I later found out that this was the concert that Roger Waters was inspired to create "The Wall" from ..
listening to him play makes me sad, because i know i will never be able to play that well and i will never be able to compose such a beautiful piece of music thanks for the upload
Indisputably a great genius of music and electric guitar players, if there´s a god please CLON DAVID GILMOUR PLEASE, love his way to explain himself, we want you for lot of years. good video THE MUDMAN.
Perspective is crazy. An interviewer thinks they felt the magic and the coming impact of Dark Side, while David saw it as he and his friends working hard and making tunes they all liked. Great way to humble someone. I sure am.
"it's as if he was playing the only instrument that ever existed in the world", I like that one sentence best over any I have ever heard concerning David...mostly 'cause he does play like there was never any other instrument ever invented, it is HIS, the guitar, all others have some mighty big shoes to fill, no matter who they are, past-present-future, some mighty big shoes to fill.....many years of joy in music, Thank You, David.!
First listened to darkside when I was thirteen and smoking hashish ,it completely captivated me.Another world was opened to me ,and i've been a huge fan since.
That was super!!! That million dollar guitar sound just kicked my rear. And an interviewer that knew of good questions to ask. I do wonder what happened to the Animals segment. Loved it !!
I LOVE David Gilmour and have mixed feelings about Roger Waters. But, it irks me to hear people, even David Gilmour, say Richard Wright was under appreciated in Pink Floyd. Anyone paying attention to the music, especially early on, but also in the famous stage, gets how central he was to the entire greatness of the music. Roger Waters lost sight of this when he fired Richard during the recording of The Wall. Kudos to David Gilmour and Nick Mason for bringing him back when they got the chance. Pink Floyd was/is awesome due to the incredible sum of all four members. Even the Roger Waters driven concept albums later on would not have been the same as a solo album from him. Can you imagine Shine On without Gilmour playing guitar? Ridiculous to think it would have been the same/as good. I say Shine On and you think: ber der der dar. Those four notes that Gilmour contributed. The Final Cut was essentially a Roger Waters solo album and is a snooze fest and his solo work is uninspiring to most, while David Gilmour's led Pink Floyd was enormously successful as is his solo work---though, certainly not the same as when they had Roger's brain with them. But, still pretty fucking good. Makes me think of Johnny Marr thinking he'd be OK without Morrissey. The joke was on him as it was in large part on Roger, and in some ways, though less so, than John Lennon vs Paul McCartney.
Voltaire 666 You get to the same point I do. Waters and the bands lyrics are 60% of PF's guality and Gary Gilmores guitar it 60%. I am not going to argue over the other 50% (bass, drums). The combination over a range of time was worth 170% to me. That 70% will never be again.
Voltaire 666 RW was under-appreciated by RW definitely, but by the same token, RW could've been given more dues by RW. RW and RW had a simmering history of previous, as AP and JM amongst others, have said; although it's nice that RW and RW were able to put it behind them when it mattered, such as when DG, NM, RW and RW did a fund-raiser for the RW, after he had his life-changing accident.
Voltaire 666 I sense from this interview and ones with RW of similar vintage, that there is a deal of regret and guilt on both their parts for the events of the 80's and 90's. I suppose they cant change history, however they can certainly exorcise some of this by generous comments and professing a greater appreciation of each others legacies / contributions. No small thing considering that neither man would be considered easy-going. Both bloody geniuses of course. I just love DG - the greatest guitarist of all time in my book.
In doing some some quick math, if Comfortable Numb has been played on the radio 330,000 times since 1980, then that song alone has received 2,101,000 hours of radio air time. Incredible, honestly
David gilmour is the best and will allways be,off course for his music but he will allways be super hot no matter his age xxxxxxxxxx superfan from holland ,xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
all great guitarists overcome their limitations, stop copying others and develop their own techniques and distinctive sound-mr Gilmour was and is, one of the best.
Paul Rappaport used to be an A&R person at Columbia Records (David's label) and has been friends with David since I believe 1975. Listening to David's interviews with Paul and In the Studio host Redbeard are always informative.
Redbeard's interviews with David on In the Studio are amazing. Redbeard championed David's solo career since 1984. Roger won't sit down with Redbeard anymore but David has done new interviews with Redbeard ofr On an Island, the 2011 reissues, The Endless River and Rattle That Lock
at 17:38 when he says comfortably numb has been played 330,000 times in the u.s. since 1980 I think he actually meant to say 330million. the one on youtube has 16million and it has only been posted for about 6 years.
Correct me if I'am wrong but, about min 18 He's answering about a question about, how he wrote Comfortably Numb and how he tuned his guitar (High Strung). I 'am pretty sure that Hey You is high strung tuned not Comfortably Numb.
The Wall: . . . took care of that yesterday . . . a Tuesday. Thanks for being alive. Nice having you here. Stay healthy. Still looking good. Keeps the pulsing real. I've tried to see y'all a couple of times. Got TOO stoned! Might sound weird or irresponsible . . . but having a head is truly vital.
wowwwww o melhor show do maior guitarrista do mundo...David toca piano se diverte muito...dança com a guitarra...canta muito faz um monte de caretas tocando OMG d+++++ ;))))))))) ..eu amo
David shows his musical knowledge here when he was talking about the high strung guitar. Where he says that the E on a regular guitar is very low and gets in the way of a D chord, but on the high strung guitar because the E is much higher than the D chord it "just sounds like a 9th pinging away". Anyone who knows music theory knows that in a D major chord that C is the 7th and E is the 9th.
vajraloka1 Maybe because Clapton and Roger went and worked on work outside of Pink Floyd? Deep emotional issues on some subconscious level. Or maybe even mutual agreement.
his guitar playing makes this clip. and I agree with the statement about comfortably numb being played 330,000 times since 1980 in the states is too low. that's 30 years divided by 12 mo. per yr. putting it under 30k a year on every radio station coast to coast?! ....stop. (not even taking into account 'streaming' music)
Don't listen to that part of yourself that says "I'll never be able to ...." And for God's sakes, don't do it over David Gilmour! Gilmour's playing is actually very learnable. It's not like speed metal. You don't have to practice rapid scales, or sweep-picking, all that tricky shit. It's more important to find your own voice, than to do a flawless Gilmour imitation. What would you do if you could imitate him perfectly, anyway? Join a Pink-Floyd-cover band? We have plenty of those already.
I know! There are times I look at Sir Paul McCartney and say to myself, "Come on Paul, you're over 70 years old - it's time to show some of that grey hair!" After awhile, trying to look like you did in your 20's or 30's is just wrong.
How does David Strat sound like Angels just tuned it , and playing it into a interviewers Microphone ,,WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Other people might be able to play the same notes...but no one else can make it sound like David Gilmour. One of the finest guitarists and musicians in history.
Best guitar tone of all the top players. Hands down.
The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land...

As a guitarist myself, I rank David Gilmour in the top five...fantastic player; tasteful, inventive, and soulful.
What a special human being, and not just with his musical talent.
just for the record, Gilmour is untouchable.
Every note he plays oozes with soul, that's why he's my all time favorite guitar player.
Richard Wright's contributions to their music are not just notable but necessary, appropriate, clearly stated and yet subtle, emotive, and always in context with what was happening on the other instruments; in other words, highly valuable!

David Gilmour is the most English guy in the world.
He was beautiful as a young chap and he's handsome and elegant now. Genes.
Totally agree! I read somewhere once that some of his ancestors were Dutch... 😉
Lol I don't know about all that, but he's a great musician.
I've been asked many times over the years in casual conversation who I would have lunch with of all the people in the universe. My answer is always the same... David Gilmour. He speaks to my soul with his guitar. I can't imagine myself without his music.
DAVID GILMOUR IS SO AMAZING!! HE IS THE GOD OF THE GUITAR! HE CAN STILL PLAY GREAT AFTER SO LONG
not only play he also sings like god
usually the longer u play the better u are lol
Devin Hall tell that to kirk hammett

Pink floyd is a amazing band even today...
i agree with you , its the best band ever because of their music
all in all its just another brick in the wall
blues of rock n roll That comment was so cheesy, i wish i could down vote you twice.

I think Lionel Ritchie asked good questions

I would like for them to be available in higher quality too.
Amazing man truly I can say pink floyd has been an amazing influence in my life.
Great interview, thank you.
Every now and then there is magic from the airwaves, this chap is the creator of that magic.
I've seen them live, in Houston. What a treat.
comfortably numb has only been played 330,000 times? I find that hard to believe as I can probably account for 10,000 of those plays
On radio.
Drojdier Boschetar Still though, do they count every play from every radio station? And in 2014 do they count internet radio like Spotify or Pandora? I feel like the number is some official record-thumping number EMI pulled outta some office slaves butt.

'Welcome To The Machine' are one of Gilmour's best vocals. You can feel the POWER!
The way he starts singing sounds so eerie and cold. Fantastic
It must be Sir David Gilmore
That was super!!! That million dollar guitar sound just kicked my rear. And an interviewer that knew of good questions to ask. I do wonder what happened to the Animals segment. Loved it !!
Ridiculously good looking guy for his age. Gorgeous man..

jeffrey hinkel the joke is that the former actually happened....
one never hears Gilmore or Clapton speak of each other...or at least I haven't..they both brtish blokes as welll
vajraloka1 Maybe because Clapton and Roger went and worked on work outside of Pink Floyd? Deep emotional issues on some subconscious level. Or maybe even mutual agreement.
so..who are the great up and coming guitarists of the new generations? Guthrie govan?
legendary comes later. while in the studio, it is just your next album. don't ask questions like that,.
the main man
Dave knows that baby like I know my baby.
looks and acts like a teacher great talent !
Notice that Waters never writes words, or themes, that reflects love or joy. Floyd should make love of life their next thematic album.
FUCKING LEGEND!!!
What is name of the song at 17:22
The Doctor 2 (Comfortably Numb)
my soul for amusic life like his, or of mike oldfield
For sure ! Dave RULES !!!
his guitar playing makes this clip. and I agree with the statement about comfortably numb being played 330,000 times since 1980 in the states is too low. that's 30 years divided by 12 mo. per yr. putting it under 30k a year on every radio station coast to coast?! ....stop. (not even taking into account 'streaming' music)
nice
Think Floyd.
Don't listen to that part of yourself that says "I'll never be able to ...."
And for God's sakes, don't do it over David Gilmour!
Gilmour is pure musical genius. The interviewer is very annoying.
What tool gives this a thumb down?
Thank God, a music god not coloring his hair...
I know! There are times I look at Sir Paul McCartney and say to myself, "Come on Paul, you're over 70 years old - it's time to show some of that grey hair!" After awhile, trying to look like you did in your 20's or 30's is just wrong.
Polly, his wife, does not like flying.
How does David Strat sound like Angels just tuned it , and playing it into a interviewers Microphone ,,WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paul Rappaport skipped over Animals ! ! ! :(
I could marry him
