I'm completely floored. As everyone here said, how the eff did she come up with ALL OF THAT with zero direction?!? Nada Nein Zip Rien Ling Nuttin' Honey from anyone about anything? Her own incredible talent, inspiration, and, yes, I think the Heineken was the secret ingredient from above (or below) that brought it all together. Also, it's a small but profound moment, when she says at the very end "Perhaps I was afraid of dying" as the reincarnated afterlife voice of the man earlier on saying "Why should I be afraid of dying, there's no reason for it, you know there isn't..." Masterful. Her tone was perfect. Also, I love the band, but they sound rather graceless. Did they even thank her? And as one of the two or three best-selling albums of all time, she shoulda gotten a Tudor mansion for her part, at least, which IS significant. Kudos to you, Clare, for pulling off the impossible. Along with "Any Colour You Like," "Great Gig in the Sky" is my favorite part of the entire album. A miraculous story, from start to finish.

Her contribution WAS THE SONG. Pink Floyd provided a chord progression and they ended up being the background musicians on her song.

In 1973 Clare’s vocals on ‘Great Gig in the Sky’ allowed me to release suffering at 17… 2,000 miles from home and so painfully homesick. Such a beautiful haunting release of emotion. Thank you Clare.❤

Out of the four Rick was clearly the most personable of The Floyd. The other three, especially Dave and Nick were always polite but distant. Roger was more forthcoming but...well, he is Roger. Rick always came across as the nicer guy. Always my favorite Floyd.

It was the success of DSOTM that damaged the dynamics of the creative process, they were having to attain the unattainable, roger was forever forging forward while the others were satisfied with knowing they could never top what they already did.... There are two ways of seeing a person's drive, creative or overbearing....

a happy accident ?! she didn't realise what was going on ,but millions around the world felt it because they were touched so deeply . my take is ,the Spirit was pouring out of her and was washing over us . i've come across this before when the person who is being used or that it's coming through is totally unaware of what's going on. i was driving a cab and the most painful back just came out of left field and just about totally incapacitated me. i was so dry and dead on the inside ,i couldn't buy a word. this girl prayed for me and was talking to me across the table afterword .just out of nowhere the spirit started pouring out of her and was just washing over me like waves bringing me alive on the inside .then i realised she has no idea or in the least conscious of what's coming out of her and just connecting with me and lifting me up. nearly the same thing . and i walked out a healed man about 10 minutes later nearly buzzing from head to toe. totally pain free Clare was totally unaware that she was making history with one of the most touching, greatest vocals in recorded history.

In retrospect, after listening to this interview again, while I love what she did in the song, someone that didn't really give it a second thought after her studio session, and who admits that David Gilmour had to tell her not to use words, But then, 30+ years later after seeing all the returns going to Pink Floyd, it seems a bit disingenuous to have any claims for writing the song. Her earnings for her talent should be based on a career, not turning a studio session she didn't really care about into a lottery ticket through a lawsuit.

Lisa Robinson: "One final question to you both. Roger, you're 41, David you're almost 40. What would you think if someone told you that you guys are going to carry on this personal feud, that's going to get worse as time goes by? "The verbal attacks will escalate to lawsuits, publicly airing out your anger towards each other through the world media, even getting your families involved in the feud. And all this will continue for the next 40 years- when you're both roughly 80 years old. You'll turn into two elderly old men who don't care one bit about what such a long, embarrassing personal battle would do to the millions of devoted Pink Floyd fans who never stop loving the music you two men create?" I'd love to hear the answers that the 41 year old Waters and the 39 year old Gilmour would give in response to finding out what an enormous waste of time and energy awaits them both, for the rest of their lives...

More than a happy accident It was God smiling down on Clare Torry: This song always makes me cry... It expresses to me all the Hardship and pain A sister mother and daughter has to endure in life... the song is like a journey though a woman s life from when she is young and rebellious Then mother and the pain of giving birth to new Life or battling for her family in this brute world ... And ends in the acceptance of the unevitable fateful end of life in silence... it is the story of life we all belong to Our mothers our sisters and daughters Their pain is our pain ! There is so much relief and joy in sharing this pain ....

Some people consider The Great Gig in The Sky to be the greatest vocal performance of all time, and I have to agree. When I first heard the song and the whole Dark Side Of The Moon album I thought to myself that nobody absolutely nobody on this planet can sound like Pink Floyd, they are prolific.

What a fool I was, thinking she was a black singer because of the deep warmth and soul of what was obviously a pure improvisation. I felt like her hand got inside me, twisting my guts until my eyes were pouring like Niagara Falls. Intense. Beautiful. The best take is on the album; where Gilmour directed her like the creative genius he always is.
