- The next phase of the WHY PINK FLOYD? campaign focuses on WISH YOU WERE HERE. In this video, David Gilmour talks about the release with Paul Rappaport, who visited David's houseboat/recording studio, Astoria, for the conversation. Gilmour even takes a moment to play a little of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond."
Wish You Were Here 'Immersion' 5-disc and 'Experience' 2-disc editions both will include bonus material from the band's 1974 Wembley dates, including a 20-minute tour de force live rendition of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," as well as a unique recording of "Wish You Were Here" featuring the legendary jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli.
The long-awaited 5.1 version of Wish You Were Here, mixed by James Guthrie, will also be released in parallel via independent label Acoustic Sounds.
Pink Floyd never made songs, Pink Floyd made albums. In other words, you cannot listen to a Pink Floyd song, you have to listen to the whole album. Its all one piece of art...

I completely agree with you, even you can't play a Pink Floyd album in shuffle too, that's kind of sacrilege. The Dark Side Of The Moon showed me how to listen an album, without skipping songs or playing a few songs, just let it grow in my head.

I've heard him say that about Roger on another occasion about something else. I remember the documentary but can't remember the point in question. Seems like Dave is always first to admit when he is wrong about something.
Dave Gilmour is the antithesis of the modern 'too many notes' guitarist. He's not quick, he doesn't blaze fire up the fretboard but with a limited selection of notes, subtlety in the fretting, his signature 1.5 tone bends he creates the most wonderful, expressive playing.

It's so sweet how he recalls memories he had with Rog, and how he admits that he was wrong quite a lot and Rog was right, that shows how mature Dave is, I adore him for that...and I can't believe that he doesn't think Wish You Were Here was perfectly played 😭 oh for God's sake it is a piece of art
I agree, on the last interviews for the Edginton series he's quite complimentary of Roger, while in Rogers interview he blatantly blurts out he doesn't care about the music. I mean the guys a brilliant songwriter but come on, a LITTLE decorum in an interview would be nice. The only time he ever seems to compliment the others is when some journalists mistakenly misquotes him of outrightly slagging them. And even mediocre poets will admit that when writing words, the words often just 'pop' into your mind, and its a hell of a lot harder with music, a song really is fifty fifty.
Fascinating how he is clearly not happy with his guitar work from the opening of wish you were here. But it's one of the most iconic openings to a rock song in history.

SparkDalmatian the only musician I worry about this with every time I think about him. He's been my absolute favorite since I was a child. I finally got to see him play live early this year and it was the best musical experience of my life.

Gilmour always has the best tone on his guitar. The sound is what you'd imagine hearing while drifting through the universe.

"Those four notes" was what I was saying to friends two evenings back. I was referring to "those four (particular) notes" yet also mentioned many memorable pieces of music have "those four notes". To quote from DSOTM "I was a little bit drunk at the time" so at the time only mentioned Beethoven's fifth but no doubt you can come back with others......

I think a big part on why today's music lacks what the older stuff we enjoyed, has to do with what Gilmore said in this video. Back in the 70's&80's a band made their albums with a theme vs just a bunch of random singles. I remember my ritual every time I bought a new album back when I was a kid I would go & just sit in my room & listen to the entire album..carefully inspecting the album cover & sleeve & reading all the names & the thank you's. I loved every minute of it. It just isn't the same today..

Hagfan789 I think that's not completely true. I mean, if you're talking about the majority of popular music, you might have some ground. But if you're just talking about music today in general, I'd say you're mistaken. One of the best and most prevalent examples right now would be Kendrick Lamar's album To Pimp A Butterfly. It's an album that has overarching themes and concepts of social injustices and dealing with sudden fame. It's definitely got concepts to it. One of the coolest things about it is that it has a poem read between tracks that is slowly read to points until the end of the album, where it's read in full. Each time a song ends, the part of the poem you do hear has a hint about the track that proceeds it. It's meant to be listened to in full, in one sitting. There's only been a couple singles for it, and they're different than the takes on the album for the most part. A lot of artists now are starting to realize that there are people looking for albums, not singles. So they're not just churning out filler.
Frankly, there have always been artists that have gone for singles instead of a whole Long-Play listening experience. Hell, The Beatles didn't really get to making albums you're meant to listen to in full until almost 7 years in to their career as a band (4 years after the release of Please Please Me). And even then, after Sgt. Peppers they released a whole lot of singles; some of their best songs in fact. Songs like Strawberry Fields and I Am The Walrus were freakin' B-Sides and didn't even get a release on a full album except on the Magical Mystery Tour album in the US (the release was different for the UK and it was only an EP instead of a full length LP), which was more of a compilation album than anything else. Sorry that this might be a little lengthy, but I sometimes just ramble on for miles ahead of my self.

I like how something so magical and intense comes from just nowhere, "I was playing and this came out"....and millions of people keep listening to that and having goosebumps every time the song is played. Just four notes that keeps playing in your head and makes you feel like floating. These guys were from another dimension and came to Earth to please us.

I was sitting in someone's college dorm room the first time I heard it, and when the needle was dropped on "Wish You Were Here", the tears suddenly streamed from my eyes. Just the depth of feeling through his fingers was enough to move me. It was like a soundtrack to all I was feeling at that point in my life ..

How is David just the most chill person in interviews all of the time? He has complete control over every interview I've ever seen him do and he just seems like the nicest guy.
Those 4 notes together in that particular order are truly MAGIC! From the day of David’s composing them, they became a LIVING TIMELESS thing that will, like gold, never tarnish or rust but will forever SHINE ON (like a diamond)!
I’ve been hearing those notes and that song for 45 years now (since I was 16) and the truth is, the older I get (I’m 61 now in 2020) the more deeply my emotions are stirred by the hearing of it.
As a composer using the instrument of the guitar to share what comes through him, David Jon Gilmour is uniquely and unquestionably GIFTED to a degree unequaled among guitarists. His work is extraordinary and peerless, and moves my soul to its core.
His humility is astonishing, considering who he is, such a gentle, genuine man.
Wish You Were Here is my favorite Pink Floyd song.
Pink Floyd is, in my opinion, the greatest band of all time. They were DECADES ahead of their time. Granted, they are my favorite band. They made soundscapes not even dreamed of in those days, and they didn't have the gadgets we have in studios today. They had to use all of their imagination and genius to create those sounds. The Floyd were from a different planet, sonically as well as metaphorically. No one else came close to their live shows, to album sales of that time, to the fairytale story of the band and Syd Barrett. Come on!!!!! Pure fucking excellence.

@sidIRISH I have to disagree with part of your response. They weren’t decades ahead of there time. They were so perfectly existing in that time and place. With absolute focus on there awareness of what was happening in that time and space. With those elements echoing into the future in different forms. So in my opinion their music works for in planes of time. Because there lyrics are about real-time problems in society.
Yeah, I think they were the greatest band ever. I'm not a fan of their early music. But from Dark Side and beyond they're beyond compare. True geniuses.
Wish You Were Here was the very first song I learned on the guitar. My dad and I were sitting around the fire one night and he suddenly handed me his guitar and taught me first few notes. Now about one year later he's just bought me my very first guitar for my birthday. Love the song and the album! And love you dad!
I think it does not gets much better than being in one room with David Gilmour and he plays guitar for you. I would immediately start crying, really. That is one of my biggest dream in my life. Thank you for everything, David. All the best from Germany.

I am so grateful to have been in my teens in the '70s and have witnessed Mr. Gilmour and Pink Floyd make history. It became part of me.

Gilmour is such a gentleman.
I could listen to David for hours and never get tired of hearing him talk. He brings back memories of when I was a teen, often giving me a pinch in my stomach. I saw Pink Floyd in concert many years ago and now I have that emptiness in my heart knowing that for sure there will be no more. It's like being sad of not being able to go back in time and being afraid to have missed something. Said in a few words..."It can't be!"
You don't just listen to the Floyd music but you experience it and, believe it or not, almost 50 years later that experience is still there and it is identical to the original.
Not only is Wish You Were Here my favorite Floyd album, it's my favorite album of all time. You can catch me at work listening to it as I wash dishes and air guitar along to Shine On

David Gilmour was always my favorite guitarist. He wasn't the fastest guitar player, the flashiest, or the kind of guy who could pick the strings with his teeth. But he could milk individual guitar notes for all they were worth and make them last forever if he wanted to better than anyone I've ever heard. That's his style, and my favorite style.
David Gilmour is the most beautiful, humble person.... I swear.

Wish you were here is one of my favorite PF songs it haunting, it's painful, it's melodic, it tears into your soul with unrelenting sorrow, my son went to prison at the age of 18 for protecting himself ( with his hands) on his own property from a man with a gun. I couldnt listen to the song for 6 years because it tore me to pieces, very powerful song!
Mr.Gilmour has become so gracious in his old age, and less cynical.
I'm not sure he was ever cynical in terms of character. There are periods of time where he said cynical things, and from what I can tell it was mostly when Roger tried to prevent Gilmour et al from going on under the name Pink Floyd. That mostly came from Roger because starting with Animals he turned into a really cynical person. Gilmour seems quite balanced most of the time.

David has never been cynical. Roger was and is. Even snappy with people who are merely giving him praise. Maybe mellowed a bit, but not a lot.
In 1971, I was 20 feet away from David Gilmore and 15 feet away from Rick Wright at Randwick Racecourse (Sydney, Australia). David was wearing a pink wide brim floppy hat and lounging on a bar stool, unlike any other guitarist I had ever seen. Complete lack of pretense and so damn COOL.
Wonderful to watch him play a few notes, wow, sends shivers. A master at work.
David Gilmore seems so intelligent. I like when he says that accuracy wouldn't work as an artist myself I appreciate that kind of Sentiment.
No one uses effects pedals like David Gilmour. He made the greatest legendary tones like no one else.
The way he plays even the simplest accords is so expressive... those tiny little pieces of detail, the very mild vibrato in it - pure pleasure to listen. I hardly can think of any other guitarist who can do that: conveying emotions as soon as he touches the guitar.

My Pink Floyd LP's (Wish You Were Here, Dark Side Of The Moon, Animals, Meddle and all the others) were my most valued treasures in the 70's and 80's. Much later, when my daughter was 16, I bought the same albums on CD, and gave them to her as Christmas presents. Thus, when she was preparing for her exams, I managed to re-listen to all of my favourite tracks coming from her room at full volume. Now she is 24, expecting her second baby. The first one, a little girl, is very musical, she loves listening to children's songs and dancing. She's only 1, but already knows how to turn on granny's old CD/cassette player.😃 Hopefully, one day she'll be happy to inherit my, and my daughter's collected Pink Floyd albums.

One of my great regrets was missing Floyd when they came to town in the 80's on their Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. So many people like to claim Floyd was shallow after Sid left but I think Gilmour brought brilliance.
Milo X I was lucky enough to see them in Lexington Ky during that tour on Nov 8 1987. I will never forget that feeling..... I don’t know if I appreciated at the time like I do now. Again, I feel so very lucky.
One of the few regrets I have from my youth in the late 70s and early 80's is never seeing Pink Floyd live
BB King said something iconic that was tailor made for David Gilmour. Its not how fast or loud or how many notes you can play on a guitar, its how few you can play and make them matter. I've seen Eddie Van Halen and Stevie Vai and other so called guitar gods play live. Yea they blistered a guitar with lightening speed but it was just loud,fast,sloppy,and wasn't well played in any way shape or form. They are only showmen and don't possess real skill in music. David can play 3 notes very slowly that will bring out an emotion in a song that stays with you forever.

Brian Cabral My 16 year old son has picked up my guitar and is quite talented, as only a teenage mind can be. But it just hasn't clicked for him yet that making music that people will pay money to hear is what it is all about. He thinks because he can play a scale faster than hell and can pick at 200 bpm that he's a guitar hero. I make him watch the King Brothers (Albert, BB and Freddie) along with Gilmour, Brain May and other great musicians. Even a guy like Angus Young or his brother Malcolm. Very few notes, but arranged perfectly and it get's your toe tapping, your head bobbing, and the finished product has only three chords! Perhaps he will get it as he gets older.
Such a shame what happened to malcolm young.
pink floyd Yes, it is. I just hope he is able to function at a level that will enable him to enjoy life after ACDC. If he's bed ridden or worse, that would really be a shame.

I cannot imagine the pressure those four lads must have felt trying to follow up the Success of Dark Side. They were still so young.

My God, when David started playing Shine on....what a brilliant genius he is!!! When something never gets old, for me, that's when i know it has transcended time......amazing band...amazing musicians...grateful.
Beyound beautiful is all I can say about Pink Floyd. And as for Sir David Gilmour I adore the way he his. A very English Gentleman. He seems to be the essence of what it means to be from Great Britain. A total gentleman. He is so chill every time I see him in interviews. I really can not see him displaying any sort of anger towards any one at all. Even with his riffs with Roger Waters he said in one interview that the so called feuded with Roger should be put to rest. He said he sort of missed him. Just like David to be so blunt about it. He is just such a humble kind man. I truly would have loved to have met him one day in person . He truly is a gentle soul. Much love to you dear David.
the last statement David made regarding the kid the room joining in concept was awesome. I wonder if they new at the time this would help young musicians learn such a popular song therefore inspiring them to create their own songs.

As I grew up and the first time I ever heard Pink Floyd and sitting there just listening I became relaxed. So all of there music kept me steady, level headed.

Wish You Were Here is the first song I ever learned to play on guitar. I stumbled across the opening notes by accident and then bought a copy of the record and taught myself to play along to it on my stereo. This interview makes me very happy.

The problem is there's nothing to look for in music anymore. Even bands that are considered good today like Muse and Coldplay have no passion in the meaning they sing about.... they just sing them for the sake of being relatable or edgy....
I know this might not be a popular opinion, but I honestly think a lot of modern hip-hop has a more interesting conceptuality to it than most modern rock. I had little to no interest in rap for a long time, but there's some really technically and emotionally engaging stuff that's coming out.

Wish I messed up my guitar playing as much as David says he messed up some parts of WYWH. But such is the nature of an artist. Someone can look at a painting and think it's beautiful. But the artist that painted it just looks in the tiny corner, where they think they messed up. One of the greatest albums ever. David is my guitar hero.

Is it me or just listening to David telling this Pink Floyd stories with that sooth voice really makes you feel somehow peaceful?
David explains that the opening to "Wish you were here" was to simulate a kid playing along to the radio with him.
I"m just sitting here with my mind blown, yet remembering strumming along as I tried to learn the chord structure and nuances that made this timeless.

@@andreascano8533 Dave: I bought a twelve string guitar off a guy I knew, I think I had recently bought it off him. I was strumming it in the control room, number 3 at Abby Road and that just sort of started coming out, that riff. And a bit like the beginning of "Shine on" with those 4 notes, I started mildly obsessing with this riff that was slowly developing. Roger's ears pricked up, he said "Hm, what's that, where does that come from?" And I had a terrible habit of playing bits of songs by other people that were good, and Roger would say "Yeah, that's great! Let's use that!" "Can't, it belongs to someone else.." So he got a little nervous about asking sometimes and I think he was a bit nervous asking in case it came from someone else from somewhere else.

popcorns house you can’t compare Van Halen to Gilmour, they have totally different styles. You can say Van Halen is more technically skilled but in terms of the actual music, many people would say that Gilmour is superior. My preference is the melodic and emotional playing of Gilmour rather than IMO the rambling, nonsensical at times Van Halen. Yes, it is easier to play the stuff Gilmour plays, but it’s one thing to play compared to actually composing the music.

My first few months in secondary school/high school, around 12 years old, (early 80s) a new friend hands me a white blank tape that he had recorded by plugging the holes with toilet paper. written crudely in red marker were the words Pink Floyd mix. I put it into my walkman on my 20 min walk home and had what I can only describe as an awakening, the closet ive ever come to a religious experience. That feeling that nothing was ever gonna be the same again.
