How to work a Knitted on Border

- In this video, I talk about how to work a knitted on border. These are great borders for shawls with hundreds of stitches; instead of binding off, you work a border perpendicularly and knit one body stitch and one border stitch together.

Thank you so much! I've just knitted my first blanket and I'm used to how crochet works with doing boarders. I think I can do a simple 2 or 3 stitch boarder. Thank you!
You're very welcome! Yay for finishing your first blanket!
Love it thank you
Nice I can see everything you are doing but what about the corners? I am trying to add border to blanket.
To work around the corners, you'll need to work some extra rows. I don't have a video for that, but here's one I found that looks like it could be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/Q2eaUrx278k/v-deo.html
Thank you for tutorial
I am crazy than you my shawl is at 748 stitches crescent shape

You're very welcome. I'm glad you found it helpful. It sounds like this will be a great way to finish off all those stitches on your shawl!
Just what I needed - the written direction on my pattern did not help me as much as seeing it here. Thanks

Also if am not changing Colour x
Hi, I want to add a border to my baby blanket but didn’t start it with a border. It seems like your video offers a solution to that problem, but I don’t know how many stitches I’m supposed to cast on for the border and the amount you casted on were specific to your project. I have 110 stitches and I’ve been working in seed stitch; how many stitches would I add of the second color when I want to start the border? And how do you go to the next side of blanket ? Thanks
This is a great way to add a border to a blanket. You'll want to decide what type of border you would like (do you want to continue with seed stitch or do something else?) and how wide you'd like the border to be. Then based upon that info (and considering your gauge so the width will be what you want), you can figure out how many stitches to cast on. As for the corners, there is a little maneuvering that you'll need to do to create those. I don't have a tutorial video for that (sorry!), so you'll need to look that up.
@@KarenDawnDesigns I am on the hunt for instructions/publications regarding 'rounding the corners' of applied patterned (leaves/various cables etc.) borders. Actually, what would be marvelous is a book that has a plethora of 'edgings' and the charts detailing the corners and the repeats on the 'straight a-ways'. Sort of an "Applied edgings with corners for Dummies". Might you be able to point in a direction where I can obtain some detailed information?
Your video was quite helpful! Thank you!
@@kareno800 Hi, Karen! It sounds like what you're looking for is a stitch dictionary. I have a couple of my shelf that specifically have edges and trims: The Harmony Guides Knit Edgings and Trims edited by Kate Haxell and two books by Nicky Epstein -- Knitting on the Edge and Knitting Beyond the Edge. I'm not sure if they cover corners, but books like these might be a good place to get started looking for that information.
I have Don a border on my Shawl
It is KNIT TWO YARN OVER KNIT ONE THEN I GARTER STICH RIGHT ACROSS TILL END THEN KEEP REPEATING ON EVERY ROW
ONLY THING IS IT INCREASES A STICH EVERY ROW
SO DO I DO
KNIT TWO YARN OVER KNIT FROM BACK IN STEAD
HOW MANY STITCHES WILL I NEED TO PUT ON TO DO THIS AS THE PATTERN CREATES A TINY HOLE WHICH LOOKS LOVLEY
HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME PLEASE THANKYOU X
A yarn over is an increase so that means you need to balance it out with a decrease. I'd recommend the following 4-row repeat:
Row 1: Knit two, yarn over knit one
Row 2: Knit across
Row 3: Knit one, knit two together, knit one
Row 4: Knit across
Hope that helps!
Thank you Karen for your advice
Works Perfectly xx
Where can I find the knitted border that you did?
The example shawl that I show in the video is my Blanchefleur Shawl, which is available on Ravelry (www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/blanchefleur-shawl)
@@KarenDawnDesigns Thabk you.. when I click on it, it says 404 error, can’t find link.
@@Fiberluxeco Looks like the link included the ) at the end, which shouldn't be part of it. If you remove that, it should work: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/blanchefleur-shawl
@@KarenDawnDesigns Worked. Thank you.
