  • How to work German short rows, plus a tip about using stitch markers to indicate where to make the next turn.
    Don't let the length of the video scare you away from German short rows. They really are quite easy once you get the hang of them. But, more importantly, this video is really two videos in one. The first half explains how to work the German short row and the second half explains how to use stitch markers to help you keep track of the turns.
    If you want to jump ahead to certain points of the video, use the following timestamps:
    Skip the intro and go straight to the instructions: 1:06
    Instructions for how to work the turn: 2:10
    How to find the turned stitch: 4:55
    How to knit back across the row: 7:05
    Stitch marker trick: 9:42 (and through to the end)

    I have watched so many of these videos, and NOW I understand the German Short Row. I could never see it before. Thank you for putting it so clearly - and how to add the markers when needing them.

    I have spent hours trying different short row methods on garter stitch. This is a brilliant video and the method is really easy and looks terrific. Thank you Karen.

    This has been so helpful, a confident beginning but felt unable to try certain patterns with gsr, thank you.

      That's so great to hear! Once I learned GSRs, it opened up a lot of patterns that I had been hesitant to try, so I hope you have fun with the ones you've been looking at!

    Oh my, reading while knitting! I've only been knitting for about two years and I can't even begin to imagine how one can do that. This was a very good video, Your instructions were very clear and concise. Now I'm going to look for a pattern using the German short rows. Thanks

      I'm so happy to hear that the video helped you with German short rows. I do have a few patterns on Ravelry using them, found in my Gawain's Shield book (www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/gawains-shield) if any of those interest you (they are also available individually on Ravelry). As for reading and knitting, it's only simple garter or stockinette that I do at the same time as reading, and it just takes a little practice (and an ebook reader). Just look away from your knitting for a stitch then a couple of stitches and then a couple more and before you know it, you'll be able to do it, too!

    Thank you so much for explaining how and when to add the stitch markers. I was having trouble with this in my project and now I feel confident to go ahead with my pattern. Great video.

    Great Video. I love the clear instructions, and the way you counted between the next turn. I wasn't sure if I had to count the double stitch as number 1 or not. Now I know I don't count that stitch. I also loved the tip. My biggest problem is how to substitute a GSR for a pattern that just calls for a W&T. I know that there are 5 basic W&T's, and they are in 2 groups. The turn & flip are GSR and Japanese. The loop family has the W&T, the YO and the shadow method. Does anyone know the answer on substituting? Thank you.

      I'm happy the video was helpful!
      For substituting, here's a way to think about it. When you work a W&T, you work up to the stitch that will be wrapped, do the wrap, and then turn the work. For a GSR, you actually first work the stitch that will become the double stitch, turn, and then create the double stitch. So if you want to use a pattern that calls for W&T and change it to GSR, you need to work one more stitch (technically the stitch called the wrapped stitch in the pattern) before turning and creating the double stitch. Does that make sense?

      Thank you so much for the FAST reply. And thank you for the explanation on my question about substituting a GSR for a W&T method in a pattern.

    Excellent, way of doing a german short row. Thank you, for sharing your expertise. I think I will try this on the back part of the neck of my sweaters. Do you advise to start it after the neck ribbing? Should I purl one row after ribbing or knit one row before starting. Or should I knit more than one row? I’m about to start a sweater but I’ll wait for your response so it’s done properly. Thank you! 😊🧶

      I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful. Yes, I would wait to start the shaping until after the neck ribbing, that way the neck ribbing looks the same all the way around. I'd personally work one knit row and then start the short rows (just because I'd find the start of the short rows to be a little easier that way), but that's completely personal preference. I hope you have fun with your sweater project!

    Thank you so much. Would it be different if working in stockeynet stitch?

    • @KarenDawnDesigns
      @KarenDawnDesigns  3 роки тому

      Hi Sigrid! The process is essentially the same when working stockinette. But on the rows where you will be purling instead of knitting, when you pull the yarn to the back to create the double stitch, you'll need to return your yarn to the front (between the needles--don't lose the double stitch) to be ready to purl.

    how do I do a german short row for left handed knitters

    • @KarenDawnDesigns
      @KarenDawnDesigns  6 років тому

      I'm sorry, Marianne, I'm not familiar enough with how to knit left-handed to know exactly how German short rows might be done. I did a quick search and found short rows for left-handed knitters but couldn't immediately find German short rows (the video I found did wrap and turn). Is there someone in your local community that you might be able to ask? Perhaps you can figure it out together.
