This is called a SuperAttic and I invented it. IT is an awesome approach. A vented roof and a conditioned attic. It makes a huge difference in the house. Thank you for your review! -Larry Janesky
Joel learned more from you because you have installed. Big difference from a seller than someone who has it in their home. Thank you. I’m a DIYer so this gets me that much closer of making the investment. Cool
@@dissectingdiy I have already started planning on doing both the attic floor space and then the rafters. At the moment my house heater is running awhile now. Doing the ceiling first might help with this. Thxx
not sure if anyone gives a shit but if you're stoned like me atm you can stream pretty much all of the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. Been binge watching with my gf for the last couple of days xD
Thanks for the video, I’m thinking of doing this to my attic. I’m in the Central Valley of California and gets insanely hot in the attic and that is where my ducts and air handle is located. Not good design.
Is silverGlo even available for purchase by the general public? I’ve looked everywhere and can’t seem to find anyone that will sell it to me. Where dis you buy yours???
Bruce Whelan essentially you would just need to cut a hole around what ever you need to vent or get outside the attic. Foam and seal around it to restore air seal.
I liked this video. It was the most informative one on this product I've watched. Before you did this did you happen to have ice-damming issues and did this improve it? I'm looking for a solution in an old house converted to a two-flat. There wasn't good heating to the 2nd floor so a furnace and ductwork was placed in the attic rather than tear up the walls to install ducts from the basement to the attic. The house already had an ice damming issue that affects some walkways and I think that the furnace ductwork in the attic has made it worse. The attic has a floor and is also used for storage by the tenant. So, my question is, since you live in New Hampshire, did you have an ice damming issue before this was installed? if so, did it help? I'm hoping so. Thanks.
I'm wondering if I can use this under my flat roof? I have a flat roof off my bedroom and underneath the flat roof is our little den area. Just had the new flat roof put on this summer and I'm ready to insulate. The roofer insulated on the exterior top layer with insulating foam boards then sealed and tarred up there. The interior roof was previously insulated with regular insulation but it got all wet and nasty so we are tearing off the whole ceiling drywall and all too and redoing it.
If you are finishing the space I would go with their spray foam option. If the pace is going to be unfinished and you don’t mind the foil look. You should be good! I haven’t seen the space so you would know what will work best and you and a sales person from Dr. Energy saver can find what works best.
Hey Joel, thanks for your review. My place is very similar to yours, 6” roof rafters and ceiling joints. Our HVAC is in the attic space, looking forward to moving the thermal boundary to the roof rafters. Thanks!
My house was built in 1950 and has zero insulation other than worthless blackboard in the walls. The walls are plaster too. Half the attic is a crawl space over an old addition which I can just use blow in. The rest is semi-finished attic and we need that storage space. Money is an issue too.
For some reason this video is showing restricted mode. Anyways the cost of this for us was about 7500. Since everything is open you could seal the bypasses by hiring a company to do that. Should reduce cost as there’s no insulation to move.
Due to expansion and contraction there have been some areas that have “sprung a leak.” And I have simply pulled out the affected foam and used the Home Depot 1 inch expansion (red)cans to make repairs. It’s pretty straight forward. I have not noticed any issues this year and the repairs I had to make was the first winter after install.
They make electrical box extensions of different depths and you may be able to stack as well. That’s what should been done, then your light base would been flush with foam board. Easy fix.
Collar beams are used to resist the positive and negative air pressures that typically occurs during wind storms on the windward and leeward sides of the roof.
Sorry I was paraphrasing from a physics explanation. But yes a a collar tie is a tension tie in the upper third of opposing gable rafters that is intended to resist rafter separation from the ridge beam during periods of unbalanced loads. Thanks for your input.
It's the same way with basement systems inc call the office if you find anything that doesn't look right and take pictures for the office so they don't have to come out immediately.
@@dissectingdiy Great. Being in Georgia, would you think it would be more cost-effective to just install a thermostat-controlled gable fan and add insulation to my attic?
@@AmericanPatriots87honestly I don’t think when it comes to heat or cold that ventilation through gable ends is very effective. That’s my personal opinion. Is it cheaper? Sure it’s a lot cheaper but may not yield the results you want or are looking for. In Georgia you probably spend a lot more on cooling than you do heating. If you are looking for a way to keep your home more comfortable and not have deal with second floor and attic heat transfer. Insulation in my opinion is your best bet. However, I would definitely vent a roof in the south when doing spray. Super attic provides that based on the way it’s installed. The only draw back to this system I have notice after a few winters is some expansion and contraction has caused it to spring some air leaks. So it is a product I can say now that requires some attention to detail and maintenance.
Max Young I’m glad because I watched this again and I was wondering about this approach. I also learned why they don’t want much insulation in the floor and for the space to be heated. The stuff contracts a little. And I spring a few leaks. Refoamed them and am considering aluminum tape if I run into any more problems s still aggregate product.
@@maxyoung2307 Haha very true, but taking the insulation out. Thats a job I don't feel like tackling until the winter! For now I have removed some to allow for heat to get in.
Michael Nelson I used Dr Energy Saver a blackdog affiliate out of Salem NH however I just checked and they no longer show in the top of my google searches.
Dude that light is plain scary. It's like a giant hole in your Silver Glo. Sure it's a pain to frame down and install a light that works better there, but if you are going to do it, do it right.
Would it work to strap along the surface and pin to rafters, then seal the hole with a Silver Glo plug? Can you even mount lights on metal straps anymore, by code?

I went through doctor energy saver. I do not believe available to the general public.
Are you going to use aluminum tape to cover the seams??
Eventually yes. I have a couple of bathroom Reno’s I’m tying up. But the attic has future plans.
Great video man. I've got an attic insulation channel as well but learned a lot watching your video. I mostly work with loose fill fiberglass.
How are vents handled? Like the exhaust vent pipe from your toilet? What if you wanted to install a solar tube?

No ice damning issues, we wanted to air seal and this was the best solution we found for us after installing a new roof.

Do you have a price for the foam boards and fasteners?
The foam boards and fasteners are from Doctor Energy saver. The professional install you see was about 7500.
Do you have any issues with air coming through the areas that are foamed?

It’s pretty straight forward. I have not noticed any issues this year and the repairs I had to make was the first winter after install.
What is that you used to attach the panels to the rafters? Where did you get them? Thanks
Really long screws that go into the rafters
Just seen the electrical part of your vid. I have to agree that they need to do a better job dealing with that issue. Thanks
I wonder if there’s anyone out there with a 3D printer that could print up an adapter for foam block that’s 4 inches thick?
They make electrical box extensions of different depths and you may be able to stack as well. That’s what should been done, then your light base would been flush with foam board. Easy fix.
Maybe I missed it, but how is your attic vented? Do you have a ridge vent on your roof? Thanks,
Mogman150 within Silverglo. It is all air sealed. No venting. To cool the roof. The soffits are vented as is the ridge.

How did you get R-20?
The sales person stated that the foam block is r20 but once sealed and air tight can achieve an r40. So I’m going off of what the sales person stated.
Best thing we ever did.
How many sq. ft. of attic (floor) space for $7K?
Kevin Johnson honestly I do t remember. Maybe 1200 -1500 square feet?
When they do this do they also close the gable vents?
The gable vents will remain open to outside. However from the inside they are completely sealed off.
