This is why we must call for Direct Digital Democracy without Parties or Politicians.
Citizen initiated referendums with thresholds and a social contract means Communities can vote their own laws. As well as a Public Authority to audit police and prosecute bad actors in our own courts.
This can be achieved through a General Strike or Velvet Revolution, much like the Occupy movement, peacefully occupying State Buildings until a People's Mandate can be implemented.
With the appropriate checks and balances, you could have a national digital forum where qualified professionals can debate the issues in a public setting without all the disinformation and bad faith antics, hatespeech etc.
Any vote would need to pass the 70% threshold, with a veto or _rewrite_ vote needing 30%.
The issues would be debated, the public educated, and then a vote taken. Votes that fail will have to wait a year before trying again. Any new proposal (Citizen Initiated Referendum) would have to reach a threshold of support before it made it onto the register. This would all be subject to a Social Contract (New Constitution) that forbids human rights abuses and discrimination, that can be written in the same manner based on the core principles we all share. Councils and Boards could operate in a similar fashion at Scale.
It works in a way that obligates people to better educate themselves ( that is to use logic and evidence in their reasoning ) for a better understanding of the issues, and then take collective responsibility for the outcomes. As opposed to the divisive US v them scapegoating and bi-partisan finger pointing the current Capitalist Pyramid Scheme runs on.

Already when money get sent to states for project it disappears.
I have thought get rid of electorial college all money is divided ,% for each state according to population each state has a bank account and after a project is done the check goes directly to the ones who performs the jobs our account is for all to see where every penny goes it never gets pocketed because each year we know what we had and where it went.
That money could also be used to bring business or if not wasted for ordinary folks to start businesses etc.

@@Uncanny_MountainConsidering the American electorate, that idea terrifies me. Even though roughly 50% - 60% of the population is sane, if America had direct democracy, the other 40% would absolutely manage vote in horrendous laws as soon as the sane half looked away. And believe you me, they would be laws that constrained the power of the majority, as we see from Republicans today. For cultural reasons*, Americans are also very susceptible to fearmongering and foreign manipulation, and it wouldn't take much to get the population to do the most horrendous stuff.
*E.g. my own take is that America's frankly insane gun culture, which is leading to an unbelievable murder and mass-shooting rate, and also leads to all Americans knowing at the back of their heads that anybody else could be bearing lethal force against them, leads to a culture where people can be easily fearmongered into hating particular groups, such as Mexicans or black people. In America, bad people are so 'bad' that it's bordering on obligatory to actually kill them. Other countries don't even think that way at all.

She helps them feel good when they are seriously injured or sick, and deals with all the physical and bodily grossness that is associate with it. Despite doing one of the most important jobs in the world, she is going to be somewhere between dirt-poor and just-barely-doing-ok.
Bob is a financier. He makes literal millions by trading stocks at the speed of light, moving them back and forward from where they aren't needed, to where they also aren't needed, back to where they originally weren't needed again, to take advantage of tiny market fluctuations. His net contribution to society is roughly zero. He has tens of millions in wealth, including tens of millions worth of properties, which he rents, at zero time and labor to himself, to desperate families at exorbitant prices. If he retired tomorrow, his massive property portfolio will feed him an income, basically 100% time and labor free, in the many millions of dollars per year for the rest of eternity. His great-great-great grandchildren will literally want for nothing.
So... yeah. Bob's the real 'leader' because he plays the 'let's exploit the system for insane wealth' game? The only way you can make mega-bucks is by definition gaming the system and exploiting others - one person cannot do the work of a thousand people, but our system can sure be gamed that one person can syphon off the work of a thousand people into their own pockets. What he actually does has no real value to society, compared to poor Alice who not only does something genuinely important, is prepared to live modestly to do it.

I HAD complete faith in the “checks and balances” our government supposedly had/has. The...."some people have nearly all the speech they can get while others have practically none" almost did it for me, but still missing smthg....
Then I heard about the dissenting supreme court opinion in a 1970s case. The opinion was that money was not speech, but property. And that laws could regulate the transfer of property in election campaigns.
To me, this did it. Sometimes the majority does get it wrong. The Dred Scot decision, for example. And we can also amend the constitution anyway. Overrule the court. A tall order, as they say. But such would be just, imo, and many others might agree. Sometimes the courts become out of touch and obsessed with protecting their own interests or being biased in favor of them.

I just saw Microsoft owes 28.3 billion in back taxes.
Now no individual could get away with this BS.
So how are corporations like people and when do they go to jail?
We are all so tired of the legal fiction that props up this system.

I would love to see a person running for any election completely open their books. A live feed to their accounting department 24/7. They can keep their household spending private. No one needs to know which toilet paper they are buying. Everything else open to the public. Is that a solution? I do not know. I'm just putting my wish out into the world.🤷🏿‍♂

I really appreciate this video. Every time I have tried to explain campaign finance reform to my AP US Government class, it gets really muddled and difficult to understand. This video does break down the impact of cases like Buckley v. Valeo and Citizens United v. FEC. Plus, now I have another case to write a sample SCOTUS FRQ to compare to Citizens United. Thank you, Leeja - keep doing what you do!

To me, the best example of learning about how money influnces politics is by watching the Frank Capra classic, "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington", starring Jimmy Stewart, Jean Arthur, Claude Rains, Edward Arnold and Thomas Mitchell. The movie is almost 100 years old and yet it's a classic by giving the viewer a political education that's easy to understand! Watch this movie and compare it to how dark money is STILL tainting American politics (and it wouldn't surprise me in just worldwide politics in general).

This video nails the crucial issues with campaign finance in the U.S., especially the outsized influence of wealthy donors. The staggering figures from the 2020 election and the Georgia runoff highlight how money is drowning out ordinary voices. It's alarming but not surprising that the "For the People Act" stalled, revealing the self-interest inherent in our political system. The Citizens United decision and historical precedents show that this problem, although not new, is escalating. Essentially, our democracy is increasingly at risk without significant campaign finance reform.

The same principle works for the tax free status of the (mega) churches. Being tax-exempt and free of governement oversight, they can indirectly influence the political process by the methods outlined here, with the donating members getting a tax credit to boot.

It's just ridiculous how much money is used to control candidates platforms, how they vote, and the very candidates we get stuck with. I can only think of one politician who can't be bought, Katie Porter, in California. The rest of them are all on the dole to some point. No wonder we have no prayer of real democracy or a representation for the every day person. It's so damn depressing.

I always include FNB v. Belotti (1978), which helped established corporate personhood, as a contributing factor to the situation we find ourselves in. Buckley v. Valeo: money = speech. FNB v. Belotti: corporations = people. FEC v. Citizen's United: people (corporations) have the right to unlimited speech (spending money) to influence elections.
