The same happened in England from the 60s to the early 80s, a large mass of people perfectly capable of working remained unemployed for many years and had no interest in looking for work, why? With unemployment benefits they received as much or more money that if they had a formal job and having temporary jobs or small businesses they could earn much more.
@@zarach9459 having a temporary job or small business is in my opinion something good, there are a lot of people for example in rural areas here (in my country) that if they were to go to any well paying job close to them, they would waste 3 to 4 hours commuting and another 8 to 10 hours working that would be most of their day gone, and they wouldn't have time to tend to their gardens and animals, (we heave the largest percentage of any country of people who own their homes) so it's better for them to do those few hours of community work to get the unemployment check and sell a bit of their produce and rent the back of their gardens to the field workers and maybe they get employed by day when it's harvest season and maybe to chop some wood, and it all turns out fine, yet they appear to be part of the structurally unemployed bc they don't have a job, and they aren't looking for one...

Clever phrasing, implying that unemployment is the alternative. But haven't you heard? A job which pays a "livable wage" is now asserted as a human right. So if want a job, the government should provide you one or mandate that somebody else gives you one - at what you consider a "livable wage", period. Doesn't matter if you have the skills, or the attitude or you miss work too often, or you just can't produce enough value to justify the wages so a company would lose money on you - you have an inviolable human right to a well paying job (but only if you want it, nobody should be required to work in order to get by - food, shelter, medical care, education, and soon high speed internet are also human rights of course, whether or not you decide to work for them). What a beautiful ideal. What could possibly go wrong?

@@Nicholas_Terry It's two-fold actually. Socialists do care about the poor. They also hate the rich, or rather the incredible power that millions or billions of dollars grants a person. Our government is controlled by those people, and that's a huge threat to our democracy. Socialists also want more control over their workplaces, but the norm is currently to agree to whatever conditions an employer demands so you can make enough money to get by. @@johnnynick3621 I was only trying to describe what socialists believe. Only some of my last comment was my own opinion. I hope you'll respect that my views have changed somewhat since last year. My first problem is that the ultra wealthy have incredible power over me and the society I live it. If you have that kind of power in society, you should be elected. Anything else is unjust. Me learning a skill and starting my own business doesn't alleviate this problem at all. The second problem is with regard worker-owner relations. People need to work to survive. Not everyone can be a business owner. There will always be people who are at the mercy of the people who control their workplaces. Unless they're in a good, non-corrupt union, they have no ability to bargain. If they don't like how they're treated, the only thing they can do is try to find another job. Eventually, they can work toward being a business owner themselves, but it doesn't make the exploitation they experience in the meantime justified. I'd also like to say, this isn't about me. Actually, housing is in a boom even though we recovered from the government caused sub prime lending crisis. Way to distort the facts by another socialist politician.
Modern socialism is developed from a lack of a work ethic, working a minimum wage job should not get you the same pay as someone who built a company and is making millions of dollars. Many socialists just wanted the benefits without work.

What about instead of a minimum wage paid by the employers, the wage is paid by the government as a "negative tax", like an income tax credit but on the wage itself.
@@IdkIdk-cl4vp 0 minimum wage doesn't mean you don't get paid, It means your labor value is set by yourself and your employer. You won't accept less than X and the employer won't give you more than Y, so you work an agreement. This is super useful for example, for teenagers working, as their labor value is almost 0 because they are underage and have little to no experience working, commonly working simple jobs to get something for their curriculum. No employer will ever pay a 15 year old 15 dollars an hour for re-stocking the store. So again, it doesn't mean you work for free, it means your wage was to be discussed between both parties involved.
Luaínygo That makes a lot of sense, but the reason there is a minimum wage is a price floor. If there are 50 people wanting the same job. There is a high supply of labor and a low demand. Because of this there is a need to find Equilibrium, this means, lowering the costs of the worker. The employer can continue to lower the wage, and someone will accept it because “If i don’t, someone else will” if you ever read a book called “Grapes of Wrath.” it goes into this very well
Its not the bad form of communism because people can leave to other cities... If it was top down at the country level, then yeah...

Socialists may _say_ they care, and are happy to give up other peoples’ money and time, but they will refuse to do it themselves.
My pay is good, I have good skills, and the most exploitation I've experienced has been from a sketchy landlord I had for a year. I just want a better world. You can call that whining if you'd like, I guess.

No employer will ever pay a 15 year old 15 dollars an hour for re-stocking the store.

I don't like how people say "Capitalism lifted people out of poverty". It doesn't. It *allows* people to lift *themselves* out of poverty.
It's the same metaphor politicians use when trying to take credit for the hard work and determination of others, and it's a line the CCP loves repeating. Put credit where credit is due. Socialism fails specifically because it depends on the system to do the lifting, and not the individual.
Or be helped by private charities too!
@Zeksteve why? they do better work than the government, they provide funding for things that truly need it, who else is going to do this? the government? they work so poorly that half the money is gone by the time it reaches the charity, and imagine if they ran the charity, almost nothing will be left by the time it reached what it was supposed to go to, on the other hand, the generous people of america will see that 100% of all money given to the charity actually reaches it, and the people running it will spend it as best as they can, as they actually care about what they are funding.
To be lifted out of poverty you have to actually put in the effort. Not just today but for the rest of your life.
@Zeksteve - where do you learn this stuff...? I am assuming you are not a U.S Citizen...

We see it happen all the time. Workers demand more pay for their non education/skill required job. The company either moves away which in turn loses all those employees their jobs, or they cut hours/benefits/positions to make up for that loss in which case the worker is again shafted. Bottom line is this is a free nation and if you feel you are worth more than you are getting paid, you can quit and attempt to find better employment elsewhere.

The Democratic party should change their name to: The Party of Envy
So very true. Progressives demonize successful people, they demonize rich people. Yet, they want to remove all of the wealth from rich people and give it to those who have nothing. Well, if there were no rich people, then NOBODY would have jobs. And if you forcibly take all the wealth from rich people, pretty soon they are gonna stop being productive, too, or they will simply LEAVE and then there will be nobody left to get tax revenue from.
I know that if I got rich and then had most of my wealth stolen by taxes, I can tell you that after that, I would never work hard enough to get rich again. Instead, I would stand in line with my hand out waiting for my share of the free money.
@@PC4ever That's how communism started, a group of people were envious of others who had more than they did and wanted to take it away from them.

@@zz449944 ... Quite a number of the richest people on Earth are dedicated to the Democrat party. It's an absolute head scratcher on the surface. A little deeper, we see that they use the tax code to shelter their money from the Commies they support. They think that they will be protected when the Bern comes their way. They are in for a surprise. Like it's been said before, socialism is great until you run out of other people's money.
Combined income of 130k and I still cant afford to have a kid. Yet someone who can't even hold a job at dunkin donuts can blast out 3 kids with 3 different fathers.

You're living in the wrong area.
You Could afford to have a child. That right there is a lie.

Socialism works okay. Just look at Venezuela....
@Keep Rocking! That's literally not a word. Now replace that "e" with a "y".... & You're onto something.
Cryptocracy or Kleptocracy? Neither definition would disqualify Venezuela from being socialist.
@Keep Rocking! Hugo Chávez controlled the means of production, that is literally socialism. Kleptocracy refers to a gov't who steals resources from their people, and cryptocracy refers to a shadow gov't who works behind the scenes in secret. Neither definition dismisses Venezuela from being labeled as a socialist. Even if I accept that Venezuela is either a kleptocracy or a cryptocracy, it still doesn't dismiss the fact that... Again..... Hugo Chávez controlled the means of production.... which is called: (now say that dirty word with me) SOCIALISM!
It took literarly 1 comment to get to: "but that wasn't real socialism". Give us a break
@Keep Rocking! lol I did look it up. Notice how I spelled it correctly? Unlike someone else who spelled it so bad, I had to decode what they were trying to say. Again, it still doesn't dismiss the FACT that Venezuela is a socialist country. America NOT being a true capitalist nation, since the U.S. gov't started subsidizing the continental railroad in the 1800's, HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH VENEZUELA. Let me guess, Denmark is your socialist utopia? With it's free markets, no minimum wage laws, and having very very few business regulations. Pro socialists change definitions to benefit their political ideology all the time. Now try making up some more imaginary words, that you're probably gonna misspell anyways.

Unemployment pays more anyway
@@Junger2183 Yeah would you rather work 43 hours a week @$15 an hour or just sit on your ass for the same money? You don't have to be an expert in game theory to understand what people will choose.
Unemployment should quickly taper off to nothing, give people maybe a month at the normal rate so they don't lose their housing but after that drop it week by week until they're getting nothing. There's plenty of jobs even right now people just don't want to do them, I've been offering my friends the chance to work where I do for $20 an hour doing nothing but scanning and screening people at construction sites but they'd rather collect $650 a week till it runs out. Even under normal circumstances this is an amazing job for young people, let alone during a pandemic and recession, but unemployment ruins even the best value propositions, stimies economic recovery, and ensures those still working will face higher taxes to cover the deficits created by unemployment leaches.
JFK was a conservative. He even _talked_ like a conservative ("not what your country can do for you"). An outlier in the Democratic Party since.
My understanding is, he couldn't be anything but a Democrat to get elected at the time, but certainly by today's standards would be considered a conservative.
@@cee8mee True. Also, conservative Democrats were a thing before LBJ. In the same way left-leaning Republicans were a thing (Eisenhower not only left the New Deal policies untouched, but expanded Social Security, desegregated schools, and paved the way for the Civil Rights Act of '65 with his own civil rights' act).
The Democrats only truly settled ideologically with Johnson, and the GOP starting with Reagan (who was really a continuation of Coolidge, plus the foreign interventionism). And I think it's better that way. Before that, the Dems were this weird mix of labor movements and segregationists, and the Republicans were somewhat pro-business, but all over the place in everything else.
Even in the 80s and 90s there were blue dog Dems who were by and large social conservatives and understood that if you kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, you will have no more golden eggs. Democrats today are greasing the skillet.

Now they say 15 isn't enough. Housing costs too much. Well housing costs that much cause got to pay employees that build them $80 an hour cause unskilled burger flippers get 15. I saw a cost of living graph. Said $33 an hour in California is same as making $13 an HR in Arkansas. So if you make less than $33 an hour in California you be better off getting a trailer in Arkansas and flipping burgers for min wage there.
Just curious alaska minimum wage is $10.50 or so no higher than 11$ but the cheapest housing is at least 1000$ the cheapest steak is 15$ for one the oil companies claim to spend billions on our economy yet there’s twenty craxkheads outside sleeping in the ditch ? Yet our minimum is $10.50
@@gavinc2827 a lot of criminals go to Alaska to hide I know. The cost of getting food and supplies to Alaska is much greater causing higher costs. And probably not many companies want to have their home office in Alaska cause they fear they won't get enough qualified employees worth the pay cause no one wants to move there. I know the airport there is a big shipping transfer hub with Asia. And steak here in Arkansas is that much and 1 bed appts start at $500 but got a year wait list. Average 2 bed appt is $800. So Alaska despite the higher costs of getting stuff there is still on par with half the country as far as cost of living. As far as the crack heads in ditch.
