When people other than "White Property Owning Men" were allowed to vote, Liberal Democracy is not interested in the poor voting because they don't want to represent their interests; Liberal Democracy only cares about Capitalism and it's Capitalist (Owner) Class. This is why people always see these minoritarian arguments for political power, phrases like "the Silent Majority" or "Real Americans" or even muddling terms like the ever undefined "Middle Class" (a poll over a decade ago had literal multimillionaires identifying as "Middle Class". Liberalism is the ideology of Capitalism, and Liberal Democracies do not want to represent the interests of non-capital owners; their ideal system would be the way Stock Owners get a "vote" based on how much they own, not how many people keep things running.

Countries that have looked to the US to take the lead as a democratic nation are seriously concerned at the direction. The repugs and cat plus oligarchy are taking America, into outright fascism The capless oligarchy and the repugs smell the blood in the water and they know their goal is very within reach American democracy is in a period of great peril
The first thing we need to do is to make voting day a * PAID * Federal Holiday. The only reason it isn't is to inconvenience the working poor. Edit: to address some of the replies below, added to specify a PAID holiday, like Christmas. Election Day should arguably be the most important holiday in America.
The US could learn from other countries (in germany, we vote on sundays). But that would mean you'd have to admit that the US is in some small way not the most perfect, and that can't be true...
Ballot drop boxes beybey! Early voting, too. In my county, you can drop your vote-by-mail ballot off at any number of nearby dropboxes. Or you can go to the county registrar's office on a Saturday or Sunday as early as two weeks before the election and vote in person.
As a Swede I am baffled that you have a "voting day", and that you are expected to both stand in a line and work the same day. I just get a final date and weeks to go to any of a half dozen local offices. It takes 15 minutes tops when I show up.
In New Zealand we have automatic voter registration - everybody is just registered to vote when they turn 18. There is no restrictive law making it hard to register or hard to vote. We also have proportional representation, so not only can everybody vote, everybody's vote counts. America BADLY needs to reform their system so each person's vote counts the same as each other person's vote.
@@stintus1 New Zealand is very multicultural. Large communities of Maori, Pasifika, Asian, you name it. Probably just as much as the US if not more so.
@@stintus1 Everything. Actually I just googled it to check I wasn't misleading you, and the top answer from google was: US: 75% white NZ: 73% white So yeah, New Zealand is actually slightly more diverse than the US.
Similar in Europe. We are automatically registered from the day we turn 18 til the day we die and for every election that happens in our lifetime and that we show up to.
I live in Alabama a deep red state which in 2012 required voter ID to curtail voter fraud. Well, what happened was in 2012 the republican house majority "discovered" a financial short fall, to remedy this problem the legislature closed dozens of Driver License Offices, in democratic voting counties. Coincidently a Driver License Office is the place you go to obtain a voter ID. Making it more difficult for Democrats to vote. Native Americans are often not allowed to vote because they have only PO box as an address many reservations don't have street addresses. In Arizona for example only 18% of Native Americans live in a place that has a street address. Arizona has 300K NA, New Mexico 200K, Oklahoma has 300K that's 800K people yet only 160K have a street address and as such are allowed to vote. My point is if you require anything other than being an American citizen and 18 years of age or older you can control who can vote.
In response to voter ID laws... My aunt was born in Africa, because my grandpa was stationed in Africa back in the 50s or 60s as active military. As a child born to a military serviceman abroad, she is considered a US citizen, and her and her siblings eventually came back to the US to finish their childhoods and become regular adults. A few years back, Texas made it so you had to provide your birth certificate on file before you could renew your driver's license. Somehow between everything, the military doesn't seem to have her birth certificate on file, so my aunt has been without a driver's license. It really was a challenge to get her on base when my grandma (on death's door) was at a base hospital last week; someone with a CAC had to get her in since she did not have an ID. She also can't vote and can't drive. She has literally become an undocumented US citizen, even though the US government is the one who stationed the family in Africa and dropped the ball on maintaining a birth certificate. I really don't know how long this can go on.
Dude, after 9/11 EVERYONE has to show their birth certificate to get a drivers license with a star on it that allows you to fly. And if your license has expired.
People may be surprised if they research the history of the birth certificate. People will be surprised if they start reading dictionaries, contrast w/law dictionaries, & researching etymology. It is incredible learning & an eye-opening adventure.
Imma give an unpopular opinion here... but I believe that we should: 1. Federally outlaw gerrymandering 2. Federally outlaw lobbying (it's effectivly bribery by another name [only difference i can spot is that you have to declare anything you receive]) 3. Make an independent organization who's only purpose is to enforce those laws 4. Have said organization maintain publicly available records that can be subject to audits at any point (and preferably incentivise the public to do so) 5. Anyone who's caught trying to circumvent these rules is barred from running at any level of elected government positions
A thoroughly thought out strategy with its own checks and balances! I appreciate this very much as this also questions how America is in its optimal state where any action will have negative outcomes as these motions will help to make voting more democratic and inhibit special interest corporations from buying special treatment or manipulating the voter outcomes arbitrarily to skee outcomes.
Trouble is, “independent organizations” are pretty easy to influence if you have money. EVERYBODY is vulnerable to influence by people with money, that’s why people want to be rich; power. 🤑
I once tried voting in a local election and had my ballot denied due to signature mismatch. I had signed with my dominant (right) hand about a month after "fully healing" from my thumb and pointer finger being broken. Between pain and disuse, my digits weren't fully cooperative yet, and yes, my signature looked a little different. Not much. Enough to pass at the bank when signing a check, but not enough for the anti-fraud measures on local elections. I didn't get to vote in that election because I could not produce a matching signature and its MY signature. If they're stopping legitimate votes because "I dunno, man. That 'B' doesn't look right.", they are ABSOLUTELY stopping fraudulent votes. If people think about it for longer than five seconds, I promise them, it'll make sense. 🥴
Nah, every single one of the 3 million illegal votes hillary got were transcribed perfectly by a single master forger. This is sarcasm in case someone doesn't get it.
The GOP party platform is also in direct opposition to what Americans want, according to most polls. They worked for decades to overturn Roe, even though the majority of Americans (including many who said they were personally opposed to abortion) wanted abortion to remain legal in some circumstances. Meanwhile, they’ve blocked sensible gun control laws that the majority of Americans support. Republicans *know* that they can’t win on policy; instead, they run on culture war issues and tax cuts (which primarily benefit the wealthy).
@@maryanntoner4520 Because it is wrong to kill babies, regardless of what Americans think. Before Roe, California couldn't get an abortion bill passed. Roe overturned the will of the people and changed it for the worse.
Lmfao they have a giant list of policy positions. You just can’t argue against ANY of them. Border enforcement, low taxes for everyone, ending foreign wars, lowering entitlement program benefits, bringing back manufacturing jobs. It's easier to knowingly support a lie, point the finger, and blame someone else for your problems, so long as it allows you to keep ignoring the truth, when it doesn't align with your beliefs.
*@owlxoggest6247* I completely agree with you. Unfortunately, my side (the left) is doing _precisely that_ to the MAGA idiots like Enrique Tarrio by sentencing them to ridiculous 22-year sentences. As an Australian I am stunned that the parties in power run the elections in the USA, surely this is obvious as a path for corruption for either prty. In Australia our elections are run by the Australian Electroral Commission (AEC) which is a public service function completely independent of either political party, means apart from thing anything else you don't get restricted ballot stations in specific socioeconomic regions (we also have mandatory voting). Not one Australian would ever have thought our elections were rigged, although a few local extreme right wingers are trying to drum up some Trump like claims here when they lose, which are just laughed off, even by the rest of the conservative voters. Non violent handover of power has never been an issue here and unlikely ever to be so.

why? my grandma told me this as a child : wou can always spot the liar in the room , they're the one accusing everybody else , of lying and so it goes, with every other sin ...lol
It's hard to blame them for this obsession, really. Considering how much gerrymandering and voter suppression they commit to, it must come as an absolute shock that they can still lose.
The reason they lose in spite of cheating is because the generation that they rely on is dying and younger generations by and large have very different views and priorities.
@@mkvenner2 And where is your proof of this cheating? We all know what Liz Warren said about electronic voting machines in 2018. Is that what you're talking about?
Unfortunately, I have far-right family members. My grandfather passed from COVID (which those same family members gave him because he was house bound and they took care of him and thought COVID was a hoax, anyways) and it was a month before the 2020 election. They decided that they were going to vote Trump for him with his mail-in ballot "because that is what he would have wanted". If it wasn't for telling the paranoid one of them that they could serve time for it, it would have happened because the others didn't care because "the Demonrats are already cheating". Note, this is BEFORE the election and is all based on Trump's preemptive propaganda about how the Democrats are cheating on an election that hasn't even taken place yet. But lucky for them, the paranoid one turned in the unused mail-in ballot. Hindsight, I wish that one didn't. I think that court appearance and possible jail time would have ... never mind, they are loonies and Trump could poop in their mouth and they would feel honored and blame Obama for sh!tty breath.
You're right about President Obama. A lot of this kicked into high gear when we voted him in office. They blamed him for everything. Just the sight of him put their racist brains into overdrive.
Here's the thing tho, alot of people said covid was a hoax and yes they were obviously wrong, but one thing they were right about is how covids death rate was inflated.. that's not to say covid wasn't what killed your family member... but that is to say people have died from unrelated causes and the hospital would mark it as a covid death so they could rake in extra federal dough
This is why I defend mandatory voting in my own country. It puts the onus on the system and all parties to be inclusive and facilitative. It doesn't eliminate fraud but with greater than 95% voter turnout it's very difficult to get away with it. The US will never adopt mandatory voting so it will be interesting to see how the issues of disenfranchisement and gerrymandering will be solved permanently. Not in my lifetime I suspect.
But with mandatory voting you create a new way of clientelism and you can force people to vote for your candidate, which happens in my country with mandatory. So no. If you want real freedom, freedom to choose is algo not having a mandaroty voting system.
Voting is compulsory here in Australia. There are polling places rarely more than ten a minute's drive apart. Electoral roles are checked when you enter. If your name is missing, you can vote, but it is put in a seperate box for later checking. I have never EVER had to wait longer than 15 minutes. Conservatives still win every now and then. Republicans are cvnts.

@@fosterpainter high taxes aren't a problem. It's when governments waste taxes, such as on subsidies to destructive industries that no one wants to support, that high taxes get to be an issue. If I had to pay 50% of my wages in tax, but didn't have to worry about paying for rent, fuel, medical, food, or schooling, I'd be golden. But since the US government hates the tax payer, at least those with less than a few million dollars, I have to pay 25% of my wages and get pretty much nothing for it. It's not taxes that are an issue, it's a government wasting money that is, and boy does the US love wasting money, especially money it doesn't have. Edit: Actually I'm wrong, we do get something for our taxes. We get a military budget that's far higher than it should be, police brutality that continually gets increased funding, schools that perpetually get funding cuts in favor of private institutions that are proven to be less effective, and an atmosphere that continually gets more hostile to all life. The main damage from all the noise is that voters lose interest and don’t vote. That’s how Putin gained power, and how Western democracies can fail in our lifetime. Vote early, vote often!
I would have to add all the purist liberals (I'm calling you out Progressives, and I AM a liberal) who refuse to vote or refuse to vote for a Dem simply because that Dem isn't PERFECT. Obama even begged everyone prior to the 2020 election to PLEASE stop with the circular firing squad. Republicans know this and actually encourage it through ads focusing on the 'impuritites' they know younger voters have complained about. Sometimes, in order to preserve a democracy and preserve your right to vote, you have to vote for someone who isn't perfect but isn't as evil as the other guy.
That's why compulsory voting is a good thing. But the mere mention of it to an American will bring the inevitable cries of "FREEDOM!" before you've even finished your sentence.

LONG LINES are one reason many VOTE BY MAIL. In a Republican county and state, our urban voting places were consolidated from polling places on every block in the late 80s down to ONE for an entire neighborhood, causing 4 to 5 hour wait lines! The facility had no bathrooms, or chairs for elderly or sick & disabled. Also, people who work long hours or 2 jobs need VOTE BY MAIL! I worked 12 to 15 hours a day when I switched to VOTE BY MAIL. Health care workers work 12 hour shifts and often have to work hours over filling out reports. People with disabilities need VOTE BY MAIL! Single moms and pregnant moms need VOTE BY MAIL. Many without transportation need VOTE BY MAIL. And some who have trouble reading issues on a ballot may need a loved one to explain legal jargon in an issue need VOTE BY MAIL. Senior citizen facilities and nursing home residents need VOTE BY MAIL! And Republicans know all of this!!! So when Republicans create suspicion around VOTE BY MAIL, these are the American TAX PAYERS they don't give a shit about.
Let's not forget the attempt by Republicans to crash the US Postal Service. Putting in charge a terrible person who owned a major courier company and had a conflict of interest wanting the postal service to become terribly inefficient. Trying to make a backlog of mail where 1. Voter registrations, and change of address could not be received in time to vote. 2. Vote by mail ballots would not be delivered in time 3. Votes by mail would not be processed in time to be counted in the election.
I worked for the postal service for 26 years and handled at least a thousand ballots by mail, including my own (due to working long hours). Galls me when people say we can't trust the mail to handle ballots. Those most likely to vote by mail are traditionally seniors and military, both of whom lean red. One thing I've learned from die hard Maga, if Trump said two and two made five, four would be denounced as fraud
@@diggernash1 The real drain on society are racists like you who want to come up with excuses to kill people en masse. What kind of absolute monster thinks of other people as "tax sinks?"
I don't want to prevent people from voting. I want every vote to count equally. I'd rather convince people to vote for the good of everyone. But if I could convince people to just not vote for the project 2025 people? That's to the benefit of everyone, to even having a democracy in which to vote in the future. Consider the paradox of tolerance.
I live in a heavily red rural state but in the only purple county (all others are red). 2020 election the normal polling places were closed due to covid. So, it was allowed to drop off your ballot in a drop box or mail it in. There was 1 (one) drop box for the entire county of ~190k. The red county where the state capitol is (with about 1/2 the population) had 12!

The hate towards mail in voting always disturbed me so much. So, I'm a white male in the United States military. I've used mail-in voting my entire life since I have never been in my state of residency. My ability to actually like...be a citizen and actually vote has always relied on mail-in ballots. Gotta love that the Republican Party, lauded as the warhawks who support our troops. Were **really** against letting the troops actually vote in the country they've sworn to protect.

If people show up, Republicans lose. That has been known for decades, even the RNC leadership wrote about it themselves after Romney lost. It's just getting more people to vote that's the problem. The US could learn from other countries (in germany, we vote on sundays). But that would mean you'd have to admit that the US is in some small way not the most perfect, and that can't be true...
You first need to explain how voting works to republicans and MAGA.
You have active seditionists in your congress still. The house is dirty

We also have proportional representation, so not only can everybody vote, everybody's vote counts.

Imma give an unpopular opinion here... but I believe that we should:
1. Federally outlaw gerrymandering
2. Federally outlaw lobbying (it's effectivly bribery by another name [only difference i can spot is that you have to declare anything you receive])
3. Make an independent organization who's only purpose is to enforce those laws
4. Have said organization maintain publicly available records that can be subject to audits at any point (and preferably incentivise the public to do so)
Super pacs do not have to declare anything. They should be outlawed as well

They love gerrymandering and rigging elections. For their benefit of course.
That's just messed up.

My elderly mother has served as a poll worker for years. She went door-to-door for Trump in 2020. If there was anything suspicious taking place at the polling location, she would have spoken up. These are honest old folks doing this type of work.

Gotta love that the Republican Party, lauded as the warhawks who support our troops. Were **really** against letting the troops actually vote in the country they've sworn to protect.
Same. Been voting mail in since after 2012 after a terrible experience with poll workers - treat you like cattle and view you as suspicious. Best decision ever. I can take my time without someone trying to push me through.

I just sent for my mail-in-ballot (which I've been doing for the past 10 yrs) for the November election. I'll get it around the middle of October or so. Then I'll take my time and use my computer to check the information of each person and article on the ballot. That's the way we should all vote. No waiting in line, no driving somewhere for miles to vote, no having to take hours off work (if the boss allows it), etc.
i find it funny that Trump was SUPER specific with the amount of votes he needed. 11,780 is a very specific number. Why didnt he say he needed a couple thousand? Why 11780 exactly?
Because the count showed he'd lost Georgia by 11, 779 votes. By magically switching that deficit +1, it made him the 'winner' by 1 vote.
Trump says in the criminal phone call that 11780 is one more vote than he has, meaning that's the number of votes that would make him win Georgia by one vote.
Because he is an absolute moron and couldn't understand that asking for ONE more vote looks more guilty than asking for a handful more.
@@InappropriateFabThe man is so incompetent that he can't even do crime correctly! It wasn't "1 more vote than we have." What he meant to say was "1 more vote than we need." But even that's incorrect, as it was exactly the number of votes he needed to be up by 1. Ugh! The guy's a total idiot!

The American electoral system is appalling. As a European, the voting situation seems so bizarre. I mean, just to have to register in order to be able to vote is such a relic. Here in Austria, people with Austrian citizenship can vote at the age of 16. That's it. If there's an election, you'll get a letter telling you when and where to vote (always on Sundays, in schools) and what kind of ID you need. That's it. And that the US, the self-proclaimed flagship of democracy, still clings to keep so many people from voting, is just baffling.
Funny story: in 2016, we had presidential elections. It came down to two candidates, and they had to make a decisive vote for them. The party losing claimed that it was fraud because the envelopes for the mail-ins had a faulty glue. I kid you not, we dragged them through the mud, but they got their will and their candidate lost again. Wah-wah.
So how do you know who is a citizen? When you go to vote do they just take your word for it?
