When I was in the USCG we sent a team of 3 aircraft mechanics to a maintenance competition where civilian mechanics and other service mechanics competed in multiple categories. Our team kicked ass and won prizes like tools, but we couldn’t accept the prizes because they were above the extremely low threshold for gifts that a military member is allowed to accept. So we hold service members to a higher standard than a SCOTUS member.

Not only is it a ridiculous lie, it also says a lot about how completely out of touch and insincere he is. Regular people don't go to Walmart for fun or to vacation. They go there because it's all they can afford. What Thomas did would be the same as a fat American going to rural Africa, finding a starving child and saying "look, I'm on a diet too! If the hoi poloi hadn't started to question that "God" wanted people to act in a certain way, governing would have stopped at religion. Kings and queens are just ancient military industrial complex CEOs and generals. The rules really came from the head priests(esses). I see both bodies as the same, or, at least, religion is the grandfather (or grandmother for my Wiccan friends) of modern government. In the corporate world, lavishing gifts are considered completely unacceptable and covered by anti-bribery laws. SCOTUS and Congress follow different rules and seem unaffected by the same laws regular citizens do. Insider trading is another clear example of how corrupt our government is. Regular citizens would be in jail but government members get richer.

I daydream about having one of these high profile positions, accepting one of these "gifts" that "is totally not intended to sway you in your position," and then legitimately not letting it sway my position. Which, given my political leanings and the leanings of the typical benefactor, would have them upset with me, leading (in these daydreams) to me calling them out in public. "I thought you said this was a free gift; why are you upset? This wasn't a bribe, was it? You weren't trying to buy my vote, were you?"

This is why wealth is so difficult to measure. Financial capital is just one way to measure wealth. There’s also social capital (who you know) and cultural capital (what you know). Someone like Brett Kavanaugh may not be “wealthy” based on his salary, but if his parents are wealthy and they bought him his house, or he inherited wealth from his family, his own personal salary becomes disposable income. Through his familial connections, maintaining lucrative friendships with other wealthy people in the DC area, and attending fancy private schools and Ivy League institutions like Yale, Brett can access the lifestyle of a multi-millionaire without being one himself. The same goes for Clarence Thomas.

  • @wvu05

I get why you would want to keep judges out of electoral politics, but if you're going to do that, there should be a limit, say 20 years, on a federal judge/justice's tenure. That will also prevent the temptation of nominating a 43-year-old to the bench with the cynical goal of keeping that person there for 40 or 50 years.

I serve on a no-power-at-all, county-wide government board, like NOBODY lobbies us for anything, and we have stronger reporting standards than the Supreme Court! I have to report gifts over a certain value, up to the dollar amount where we CANNOT ACCEPT THEM at all! I am happy to do this, because I serve the taxpayers, and the public deserves to know that I don't have any conflicts when I make decisions. How does the most powerful government entity in the nation not have similar standards? This is infuriating!

Remember, it should Not be the most powerful one but only retain equal standing. This skewing in the court's favor is one of our major problems. Of course, the executive always tries and most often succeeds in increasing its power, but the legislature has been offloading its duties to the court to avoid its responsibilities (and lessen its workload and accountability to citizens).

Honey, $220k is A LOT of money. More than 60% of the population in this country struggles just to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. They have been systematically disenfranchised by people like the patrons of Thomas and Kavanagh for centuries. 220k is more than twice the median (not average, which is less) household income in this country. These people are comparatively wealthy. A little perspective is in order here.

There was a guy who saw a brass rat in an antique store and something about it intrigued him. So he asked the salesman about it and was told "$400, but I have to warn you that it's been returned twice and I won't take it back again." So he bought it and as he walked home he noticed shadows in the ditch moving his way. Then he saw rats. Then more rats. Eventually he had hundreds, thousands, millions of rats running after him. He ran until he reached the river. Then he threw the brass rat in and all the rats followed it in and drowned. The next day he went back to the store and the salesman said "I told you I won't take that brass rat back!" He replied "Relax. I was just wondering if you had a brass lawyer."

What I am not seeing mentioned is the issue of timing. Harlan Crowe has defended his 27 year friendship with Clarence Thomas. Thomas was appointed to the US Supreme Court in 1991 or roughly 33 years ago. My Grade 3 arithmetic suggests that Thomas was already on the Supreme Court when he and Crowe became friends. Crowe was already a billionaire. So how are we supposed to believe that the friendship was not corrupt?
The answer on that would be the acts of friendship performed by Thomas in the course of their friendship. Did Thomas show up one day to help Crowe’s child move? Did Thomas come with a hammer and nails to help repair Crowe’s dock? These are the sorts of things which friends do for one another.
If the only acts of friendship performed by Thomas were in the context of his position on the Supreme Court, then the SCOTUS is deeply stained by corrupt influence.

Dunno that I would want to be the senator or congressman that tries to impeach a justice, either. It would be impossible for it not to look political, unless they did something blatantly criminal.
