Well for someone that claims NOT to be a dog trainer, this is probably one of the best videos on dog training I´ve ever seen. Very specific and with a lot of useful tips for those who want to buy/adopt a "big breed". Also not being a trainer one gets the perpesctive of the owner which is far more useful than just tips on how to get a sit/stay, etc. So congrats and thanks for such a great tutorial. Great blog. I didnt understand Newfs at the beginning. Jumping is a "love Jump" for a newf. They thank you and they love you, when they jump. So you have to give them some boundries. I make "hands down", if I catch the "jump" in time, but i dont stop it, as its their nature to love you. Dont ignore Newfs. Dont leave them alone. Its a fine line. So they need lots of dialogue, they are just such beautiful dogs, I dont care anymore!! BIG HEART for the beautiful NEWFS!!!!
:)) He's so funny sliding off the bed and couldn't care less...such a typical Newf. That's why they need so much care, they're like little children that never grow up
I have an 18 month old Newfie. I potty trained Ichinojo by picking up his poop after he laid it and placing it in the spot in the yard where I wanted him to poop. It only took about 2 days before he figured out that was where he was supposed to pee and poop. I don't have a doggie door (for obvious reasons: a doggie door big enough for a Newfie is big enough for a burglar), so I leave him in the yard when I'm out and he has a doghouse he can go in if he gets hot or if it rains. When I'm home he'll just sit by the door when he wants to go out.
Dont leash pull, Newfs will rebel. talk alot, they love that, tone of voice and always the same. They relate to you and need boundries. Love jumps are BEAUTIFUL, but they should be controlled with the "hands down" , NEVER open arms, they will jump!! roll over is WONDERFUL, let them do it. They are welcoming you. Groom them, with combing, they want it, NEED it as it removes dead skin, and old hair, in non molting times or not (its not a question of them getting used to it, they NEED it" Plus grooming is a shower for them. like for us humans NEVER leave a NEWF alone. They are team animals and need you and the rest of the team. DONT take a NEWF if you want them as a yard , or garden dog.

Since you’ll be living in a warmer climate I don’t recommend you ever shaving him and always having and mostly being inside in the AC in the hot months. That video talks a bit more on that and I’m working on a few other videos. That hopefully help 🤗 ... it’s mostly cleaning after him hahaha not much I can do about him not drooling and muddy paws 😂

I live in England, where the climate is much better suited for a shaggy dog. If you get a Newfie he'll need access to 24/7 air-conditioning during the hot summers in Texas. You'll also need to keep an eye on him to make sure he gets enough exercise because he'll want to sit around all day in front of the A/C when it gets hot.
I have a cross Lab/Roti and would like to get a friend for him as I have to work and leave him alone at night, he is very friendly and chilled, he goes around 50 kilos would a Newfie be a good idea ?
Weeeell newfies, or any heavy dogs on that matter, should not jump to/from high places(cars like SUV for example) so their joints don't get damage. You should try a dog ramp(dog car ramp) for him.
Hanna Saariniemi yes agree he hates the ramp lol but we always guide him down with harness and lately we’ve just been loading him on to the back seat since we have the running board and it really helps us both lol
I have a 110 lb Newfie bitch who is terrified of her own shadow as well as an arthritic Flat-coated retriever who weighs 90lbs and drive a Suburban. We purchased Petstep ramp when we got the girls in 2012 and they took a couple days with positive treat training first on ground and then on vehicle. Tried several other brands first that would shake and make lots of noise so didn't work for our BIG baby. Petstep was pricey but worth every penny.
Since you guys didn’t crate train...two questions... 1. What did you do at night? Our Newfie HATES the crate and cries but would chew up everything and pee if we left her out. 2. When you used the bathroom as her space when you left the house did he not chew everything in there?? Balloo is gorgeous ♥️
hi!! great questions! 1.- we decided to literally ride it out, we would keep him in the bedroom, but as soon as we started hearing noises or sniffing we would take him outside. we knew that him sniffing around meant he needed to pee/poop. a bit like a baby schedule, after a few nights we figured out it was a bit like clockwork. but what helped, we also got him used to not drinking a lot of water closer to our bedtime, and would make sure there wasn't anything to chew within reach except for his toys. not sure if that helps. Personally we've never used crates but they're very helpful if you're struggling. 2.- Our guest bathroom really didn't have anything he wanted to destroy. We do remove matts/rugs, plastic bags, toilet paper haha. it's all tile so easy cleanup. Preferably use a bathroom that has a window 😂 And Thank You! hang in there it's the puppy stage lol they're adorable but a handful
Never ever let dogs jump, if they see high arms, or "let loose" they jump. Low arms, good voice to reward. Lots of grooming. It a way of connecting, human to Newf. They really respond well.
Oh he’s super small, you should get him a small collar for now, but it all depends on his size try them out at the store. You could probably get a size small but adjustable but you’ll eventually have to get him something bigger
I read that because of a Newfs coat Dry-Bathing is preferable to to keep the coat oils. Is there any truth to that, and how much more expensive is that type of care? Also there are ramps and steps for getting pets in and out of cars. That might be easier for the dog, of course he would have to get trained to be comfortable. I believe a dog trainer in Fla has a video of himself training a Newf to do just that.
Hmm haven’t done much research on dry bathing but yes not over bathing and having a good brushing schedule helps a lot especially with moisture and skin issues. And as for ramps and steps we actually bought both and he hates them 😂 we’re now loading him in the back seat since we have side steps and is also easier on his joint to get down 🤗
Heidi Ackley we feed him instinct chicken and rice recipe (kibble) mixed with the farmers dog (for a year now) but we’ve been feeding instinct since he was a puppy it’s the one the breeder recommended, it’s an all stages food
Hi!! Hmm I’m not sure about that, I think it’s more about doing really good research on breeders, always try to visit them in person and see/meet the older dogs and parents. All puppies are cute but it’s in the older dogs that you can tell. Most responsable breeders will register them for you before sending them home with you. If you didn’t get your dog from a registered breeder you might want to get with your vet to look into DNA tests (not sure if that’s the correct name)

Hola!!! Ay bhaaloo era igual! Súper mordelon en esa etapa, esto no es exclusivo de los Terranova si no de todo los cachorros, es cosa como los niños no saben que lastiman y están jugando. Un entrenador nos recomendó que cuando muerdan hacerles tipo “auch auch” como que te está doliendo para que aprendan o si ya responden a “no” siempre decirles que no y quitarles la mano o lo que sea que esté mordiendo. También les puedes dar un juguete a morder al momento que te muerden a ti. Pero como decía eso es normal en todas las razas

So he’s actually not allowed and doesn’t jump on kitchen counters unless we ask for it. Same for furniture, for the purpose of the video and that you can see him better on the bed. Also I think the furniture thing is very personal, a lot of people like having their dogs sleep with them or get on the sofa. We’re Also lucky that Bhaaloo doesn’t really like the sofa or bed, we think he gets too hot
