Welcome to a new series on my channel. In this series I will be training a German Shepherd Dog named Harley to be a service dog.
In episode one I will be teaching Harley the first ten steps that I follow when training a service dog. These steps do not include socializing or confidence building. These steps are for obedience, as it's important for a service dog to always be obedient.

He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

I'm an Army veteran with PTSD and all the stuff that goes along with it. I rescued an beautiful yellow lab/shepherd mix who has an amazing personality. Very sweet and is about 4 to 5 months old. I've had her for 1 month and really just spent that time bonding as she's never been in a house and had no idea how to be a puppy. We've mastered potty training and we've started with luring then sitting. I'm training her myself for my service dog with plans to take her to college with me. I have learned so much from watching your videos. Her task that's going to be trained is pressure therapy when my anxiety kicks up!

I would love to see videos on training to buffer in crowds, training for anxiety attacks, and deep pressure therapy. This would help me immensely due to me having to train him myself. Thanks Jessica! When I first start a dog in service dog training, I start with obedience, socializing, and confidence building. I believe obedience is one of the most important things a service dog needs to be good at in all locations and with any type of distraction. With that being said, I've only been working obedience with Harley the past few months. However, she is getting close to starting more of the service dog tasks. I would say that episode 2 will probably be going up in the next two weeks or so. :)

I have a service dog I trained myself. A male doberman. I get asked about training a service dog by many people because he is so highly trained (CDX, RAE, CGCA) passes through airport security metal detectors totally unteathered from a sit stay while I go through X-Ray. Most people don't understand to qualify as a service dog the handler must qualify under ADA being deprived of mobility or loss of one of the 5 senses. The dog must be nonreactive to people and other dogs and be trained to compensate for the disability. A PTSD dog must do all of the same and the handler needs to provide documentation from a mental health professional a dog is necessary. I detest people who abuse the Service Dog status with untrained dogs by slapping a mail order vest on their pet. Obedience 1st!!! ADA training 2nd.

"back" and"excuse me" are EXTREMELY helpful for hallways and apartments XDD I taught my dog to get out of my way when I would gently say "excuse me, please" when he was a grown-up Golden Retriever and we had to make do with apartment living.
We all adored that dog...but he passed away recently. I'm intending to choose a shelter dog in July or somewhere thereabouts, so I'm binging on training videos to improve my teaching techniques.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 роки тому +2

I love that you taught your dog the command "Excuse me, please", to move out of the way. Reminds me of a dog that I trained to bow on command. The command was "say thank you" so when someone would say that I had a nice dog. I would tell my dog 'Say thank you" and he would bow. I always like unique commands like that, so thank you for sharing that with me. Also, I'm sorry to hear about your dog passing away, but I'm happy you're going to be giving a shelter dog a second chance. :)

Awesome training 👍 I grew up with at least three dogs in the household and I was the designated trainer throughout my life owning in training so many of my own family dogs. My last dog which was a labrador was my masterpiece! he went surfing with me, snow skiing with me, hiking, bouldering, high diving and fishing! I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few things because I ran out of things to teach this dog! He could identify 10 different toys and pick out the one I asked for on demand, get food and drink out of the refrigerator and close the door. He would open the front door of the house on demand when my friends came over and then I would ask him to go get them beers out of the refrigerator. He would go and get a beer for myself and my friends! It was a riot my friends couldn't believe it!!! There's just so much more I did with my dog he went everywhere with me. was always a topic of conversation and people were always amazed at the things he would do and how he would pretty much read my mind. we began new routines on different scenarios all the time with high-fives and jumping into my arms on command and he was a 70 lb dog! Fortunately I'm big enough to handle catching him 😁🐶 I digressto watching how you train this dog and your methodology, smart.
anyhow I'm looking to get my next dog and doing a bunch of research on the types of dogs that I like and what I will be doing with him or her. I'm also a traumatic brain injury survivor so actually I'm thinking to experiment with training my next dog to really serve traumatic brain injury survivors like. My last Labrador was the best gift that I was given the year after I had a traumatic brain injury. He was a huge factor in my healing and really connected in a way that I had never been connected to an animal before. He was my Shadow 🐶 he he lived a long and healthy life, 15yrs!!

In 5 days this dog went from not responding to any commands and being overly excited when I took him out of the vet, to healing, sitting, staying, and more! Definitely not perfect yet, but so impressed with the intelligence and learning capacity of this animal!!! Thank you for the tips in your videos!!!

I want to thank you. I'm a veteran that lives in a car and never leaves. I hide in my car 23 hours a day. Hard to believe i was recon b4 and a year and a half ago, at 59 i deadlifted and squated 400lbs.
I want to get a medical service dog so that it can go everywhere with me. I don't want to leave the dog outside or in my car.
I know it takes money and/or years to get a dog like this.
I used to train dogs 40years ago with just a slip collar and a 40ft lead. No rewards back then but praise. My dogs were easy to train because they were dobbies. I did have a great dane too.
I don't ask for help and am afraid to get rejected so I probably wont ask to get a dog, but maybe I will train one.
Your video is the first of it's kind that I've seen, training a service dog.
Thank you for your time and great effort on making this video. I need this.
I'm fat and over weight and I'm slowly killing myself because of inactivity. So again I thank you. Hopefully i can get out of my own way and get me a puppy to train.
Was thinking of a min pin, but i think maybe they are too independent and need a Shepard, dobbie or standard poodle. Easy to train and want to please.
Someone said a lab is better.
Sorry for rambling. Be blessed and thank you again.
    Leo from San Diego, ✌️😊
Ps, do you crate your pup and then let her out for her training session. I heard that some people do that now. I never crated a dog. They always had a bed and I just told my dogs to go to bed and they went on command, when I had company ect.
I know some trainers at zoos and some dog trainers use the free time as a tool to help motivate animals to want to learn and the crate as their safe space.

Lovely video. I have a 15 weeks old Australian Shepherd boy. He's currently in training by myself (I do have some experience) and we're also getting an official trainer so that he can get a certificate later. He already knows the commands to sit, down, up, and also paw because I was curious how long it would take him to figure it out (5 minutes.. he's smart, hell). We've already been training in public places too like stores, train stations and farms. He's very calm and ignores any other animal, even dogs, except for when he's off the leash then he's free to play of course. He is going to be a PTSS service dog and when he's got all the basics he's going to learn things as crowd control and alerting and way more. Oh he already knows the commands to jump against me (hug) and lay down on my lap. For anyone reading this and thinks, oh, Australian Shepherds, sounds like they're well at the task. Don't get a shepherd if you don't know what you're working with! I've trained with this breed a lot before. They need a lot of physical and mental challenges, they need to work a lot, do a lot, and if you don't do this correctly... You have a dog that can become destructive or even aggressive.

We will also be doing a lot of hiking. He so much fun and a joy to train but a lot of work. Before anyone gets a dog with high drive they should have a plan for them they are not a pet they are a lifestyle

I must say that being a grad student and with the lockdown I made the decision to get a pup a few months and videos like yours are so helpful. Ive never realized how much of training my pup would actually be training myself and staying disciplined. Additionally, I was looking for companionship which I found plus more. While training I feel like our bond and love for each other strengthens and honestly at the end of the day thats what everyone wants- the idea of connecting with another. When she does learn commands and listens to me it is probably more rewarding to me than her haha!
You may say that you help people train their dogs, but a mentality like yours with the energy you have in your videos is so infectious that I can see this passion spill into other areas of my life as I continue to grow as a person!

Hey Nate, I'm Looking for Service Dog trainers by the Minneapolis area. I'm 15 years old with a ton of mental disorders and had gotten a dog to owner train. Except I was way in over my head and am really not getting anywhere with her training. She is a 7 Month old Golden doodle. So far I have trained her to sit, lay down, wait, stay, kennel, Paw, Leave it, on command poop and pee, potty bell, and a horrible focus. These are the things I had planned on her learning-
    Bringing Medication
    Water to help swallow medication
Bring a phone over during an anxiety attack so you can call your therapist or support system
Leading someone to you if you're in crisis
    DPT
    Retrieving Dropped items
Retrieving named items (Phone, Keys, Leash)
Alerting handler to sit down before they pass out
Alerting handler that they are breathing abnormally
Apply Gentle teeth pressure to forearm to interrupt dissociative episode
Alert Handler to episode of rage or strong emotion
    Interrupt repetitive self harm
Burrow under legs of unconscious handler to raise blood pressure
    Make space in crowd (blocking)
    Grounding their handler during flashback
Searching the home to relieve hyper vigilance
    Turn on light
    Lead handler to an exit
    Open/close doors
    Retrieve self care kit
Nudge Unconscious handler into recovery position
Wake up handler if having night terror
    Finding car in parking lot
If you or any trainers you know in my area that can train these please please let me know. I'm pretty desperate at this time because I'll be going back to school for the first time in a year this coming September and I hope she can be ready by then.

I have sifted through a lot of dog trainers and techniques through my lifetime of dog ownership. Nate’s system works better than any of them! Get your steps and timing down and you will have success. I’m so thankful to Nate for his dedication and willingness to share so much content that actually works. I had a zoom private lesson with him. I highly suggest you do this because even when you think you are doing it right, there is probably an important nuance you have missed. Just one lesson rocketed me and puppy to the next level. My puppy, Monty, is four months old and now does all of these commands, (and more) in the video! I have never before had such success training a dog. Thanks Nate! (Susan Thompson)

Nate, I have been watching your videos and have been impressed with your style and approach to training. I have a question though, in your episode about training a dog to accept a muzzle you were using what looked like a wire basket muzzle. Is this what you would recommend for others and if so, why? I had to put down my service dog two months ago due to seizures. His genetic younger brother will be born any day now and I will train him as a service dog as well as search & rescue tracker as my other dog was. My primary care physician and I parted company over my service dog as she was scared of large dogs. A muzzle might have prevented that from happening. What about the soft silicone muzzles or leather? Your thoughts?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  Рік тому +3

My main concern is how well the muzzle fits and stays secure on the dog. Just find one that fits well, and you should be good. :)
